Kid Safe Bug Spray

It is so hot in Missouri during the summer that the only time we go out for long periods of time in in the evening. Is there a safe non-toxic bug spray I can use on my 2 and 3 year old kids? One that I won't smell them coming from 50 feet away would be wonderful, haha. Something that isn't hard to find would be good too.

I have been told to use Avon Skin So Soft by some family but I have no way to order any Avon and really don't want to go to the trouble of finding someone who sells it. My husband thinks we should buy the Off Fan thing for our 3 year old to wear, but the 2 year old will not keep that on.

What can I do next?

"When used as directed, products containing between 10% to 30% DEET have been found by The American Academy of Pediatrics to be safe to use on children as well as adults but recommends that DEET not be used on infants less than two months old".

That Avon Skin So Soft, dryer sheets, or vanilla repel mosquitos are myths that have been debunked in scientific studies: http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/skeeters.asp

Skin so soft works for less than 10 minutes, and Skin so soft Repellent works for about 20 minutes.

Before we went to Costa Rica on vacation a couple of years ago, I did quite a bit of research on this as I was absolutely eaten alive the first time we went. Here are some safe alternatives for adults and children, all DEET free. All worked well for us.

Purchased at Drugstore.com:

I have a small all natural mother and baby store. I sell a great bug off product. I live in Texas and it works great, safe for everyone in the family and smells good too. It is 6.00. Let me know if you would like more information or would like to order some.

We use some kind of family bug spray, bought it at the pharmacy.

They say DEET is bad for kids, and this one has very little DEET in it.

HOWEVER, I've used Deep Woods Off on my older kids when they were the same age as your kids, because mosquitos were spreading NASTY diseases around here. Better to give the kids a chemical bath then lose them to a totally preventable disease. My point is, as long as they bathe and rinse that stuff off, you can really use anything ;)

When i was younger i would get eat up by bugs so my mom bought just regular skin so soft you can get at the dollar store by the bug spray and it works really good and its not as harmful as the other bug spray and its not a strong smell either. I buy it for my 2 year old since she gets eat up by bugs like i did.

Vanilla works! Just get a little spray bottle (like 8 oz or something) from walmart for $1 and put 1 tsp vanilla in it then fill it with water. It's safe to spray on them every day even if you don't wash it off! We just found this out last year and it was a MIRACLE for us! My daughter gets eaten up! She always looked like she had the chicken pox. When we'd spray this on her you would still see the mosquitos hovering around her looking for a place we'd missed.
