I am trying to decide on where to deliver having a water birth and would appreciate it if you moms could give me any feedback regarding the certified nurse midwife at Allen Presbyterian Hospital and The Dallas Birth Center on Swiss Avenue.

Thanks.

I delivered my son in Allen Presby, but I used the midwife from my ObGyn practice. The staff in Allen were great. I labored part of the time in the tub, but it was not comforting to me. It may have been in part that the water was too warm and I was having hot flashes. I liked that they have many different options in ways/positions that you can deliver. I am not sure about how the Dallas Birth Center is, but be aware that Allen only has one room with a tub. So, if it happens to be occupied when you go into labor you may not have the option of the tub. Hope this information helps.

I don' know if Plano Presby even allows water births so I can't help you there. I do know that both the Birth Center on Swiss and the Birth Center on Lovers *do* allow for water labor and deliveries. You might want to check them out if this is something you really want. I've only been to the one on Swiss, but it's very nice. I didn't end up delivering there, but I know others who did. Also the one on Lovers is supposed to be nice as well.

Big Baylor has bath tubs, and depending on your OB, you can labor in the tub; however, they don't do water births. They are very clear on this during the tours. My ob let me labor in the tub after my water broke, but some Drs don't allow that. I highly doubt any of the local hospitals allow water births, but maybe someone who's had one can tell you or not. Good luck & congrats!

I'm sure you already know this, but Allen Presby does have the equipment for water births. I gave birth 3 years ago at the Birth Center on Swiss. It was a great experience, but because of the volume they do there, I felt a little rushed. 2 babies had been delivered before I got there to have mine, and another family showed up shortly thereafter in labor. I know it isn't always like that, though. It's really just deciding between having your baby in a hospital and all that that entails, or having it in a birthing center, where you are more in control.

Dear SM,

I think I spoke to you on the phone recently. If you are looking for a birth center water birth, I would strongly suggest the Allen Birth Center. If you would like to discuss why? Please call me at ###-###-####. Thank you.

Recently, I have spoken to someone who has helped 2 women with their births at Allen Presbyterian hospital where 2 women had waterbirths there with a certified nurse midwife.

You can do it at the Birth Center on Swiss for sure. I didn't because my labor on my second didn't work the same and I didn't enjoy the water with him. When I was laboring with my daughter (that was at a hospital so she wasn't allowed to be born in the water), the water was heaven.

I loved my prenatal care. I loved that when I was in labor the CNM checked on me frequently and there was always a birth assistant nearby. My hospital birth I felt like my husband and I were left alone too much.

I've heard there is a birth center in Allen. I don't know how close it is to a hospital. The Birth Center on Swiss is about a block away from Baylor.

I gave birth to both my children at Birth & Women's Center on Swiss Ave. I thought it was the most amazing experience of my life. I thought I wanted a water birth with my first, but while in labor I chose to squat instead. The great thing about a birthing center with a midwife is that you get to choose the way YOU want things done. Unless there is a danger to you or the baby, you get to control the atmosphere. You have the same midwife and assistant throughout the entire process (don't have to worry about shift changes or your doctor being late to "catch" the baby.) Your husband gets to be an active participant and gets to catch your baby (not allowed in hospitals). I highly recommend Birth & Women's and I have sent many of my patients there as well. You won't be disappointed. Email me if you have any further questions or would like to hear my birth stories!
