Laryngomalacia and Reflux - Southampton,PA

I am seeking other moms with babies who have laryngomalacia and/or reflux. My 14 month old daughter was diagnosed with laryngomalacia and reflux. I've seen multiple pediatricians and 2 ENT specialists who keep telling me it will resolve in 6 months, and when she's not better after 6 months, they tell me to wait another 6 months. She has been on zantac initially and prevacid now for the past 6 months, and it seems to control the reflux. However, she is constantly getting upper respiratory and ear infections, and the constant rattle in her throat is unsettling to anyone we encounter. She is generally a happy baby, but miserable when she is sick. I'm just looking for support from anyone dealing with the same issues.

What can I do next?

Hello J.,
My son who is 2 now had reflux from the time he was born. I went to Childrens Hosp and they put him on Zantac and Axid. None of it helped I actually slept sitting up with him on my chest for the first 10 months. I was breastfeeding and the doctors suggested i quit drinking milk i don't know if it was that or just time but it cleared up on its own. you might try sleeping her propped up like a wedge under her mattress or see if maybe she is allergic to some foods which maybe making it worse. I know how bad it can be so my heart goes out to you. I wish you the best of luck.

My daughter had all these same symptoms. We ended up actually having allergies and asthma. Once we got her allergies under control we never had another ear infection or more vomitting. She was to the point where her ears would bleed and they were talking tubes. I can't be sure it's the same case but it is well worth looking into.

Good luck,
N.

Hi J.,

I would contact www.drviolacanhelp.com because she is wonderful and can help you find a great doctor in your area. I will also think about good probiotics for her.

You might want to try a chiropractor that you trust or one that's been recommended by friends. we took our infant to one when he had reflux... the guy was so gentle... and they say that things can get rearranged in babies when they come out of the birth canal.... I'm not sure if it worked or not, to be honest because we also had him on zantac. but if your desperate for another option it can't hurt to try it. I've heard of chiropractors really helping kids with breathing issues and even cholic.

Hi J.
I just read your post and yes my daughter had both. The laryngamylacia ended up resolving itself right after she turned 2. Whats puzzling to me is that all the research that I have done and the ENT Specialist that I have taken her to said this takes time between the ages of 2 and 3 to resolve. The rattling you hear is called a stidor and the soft pallet in the back of her throat you will hear it especially when she drinks anything cold or eats ice cream
or when she might drink soda or water any drink for that matter or breathe.

Dr Dohar at Childrens Hospital is out ENT Specialist here in Pittsburgh and he is wonderful!

My daughter is now 3 and I no longer hear any rattling but it seemed like it went on forever. She has had 11 ear infections and upper respitory infections (hospitalized twice) at around 15 months. This is a situation that takes time to resolve and will only get better when they are older and stronger.

I can sympathise and really understand what you are going through its a long road but Do your research on line and ask questions like I did.

Feel free to e-mail me to talk further.

My son had reflux too, and it took him to about a year to outgrow it-- and they told me he'd outgrow it at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months... but it was at least a year. She will eventually outgrow it, but it is so frustrating! As long as she is gaining weight, I woudn't worry about it.

We have an English Pointer too-- not too many of them here up north! Glad to see that there are some, though!

Hi J.!
My son got the same diagnosis as your daughter when he was 4 months old. They put him on the acid reflux medicine, but I didn't see it was helping and we stopped giving it to him. I kept him propped up when he slept or napped. We took him to an ENT at Hershey, which put our minds at ease, as per our pediatrician's recommendation. She put a video camera tube up his nose and snaked it down his throat to view what it might be (which was awful to watch your baby go through!). However, our Ped. said the same as your doctors, that'd he'd eventually outgrow it. The specialist at Hershey also said it'd probably resolve itself has he grew up and the muscles it affected grew stronger. But to watch any colds in case he needed to go to the ER, in case he needed help breathing. She said it'd take anywhere from 6 months to 4 years til he outgrew it. She said the rattling breathing noise was the loose muscle flapping over the larynx with the air flow And if that flap didn't strengthen on it's own as he grew, then they'd have to do minor corrective surgery. So far he is now 22 months, and has outgrown it so that you barely notice it! My son is now happy, and healthy, the rasping, wheezing, and rattling is pretty much gone! It was tough in the beginning though as it sounded so unpeaceful as he breathed. Then his first 3 colds or so we were nervous wrecks in case he needed to go to the ER. But we never had to take him. I hope knowing that we've been there, and our son is outgrowing it, will help. I found by explaining to our friends and family what was causing the sound, and that it'd go away as his muscle grew stronger, that helped settle them down :) But my son never had respiratory or ear infections either. Just keep checking with your doctors until your mind is at ease. As long as you're are confident with them, then all should be well. Let me know if you have any questions!

I recommend going to a pediatric gastointerologist (GI) or a GI that also sees children since not all do. That is their specialty (reflux and all). My dad is one but unfortunately he lives in NY. Good Luck

My daughter had all these same symptoms...acid reflux, Zantac, Prevacid etc. I had her to all different types of doctors for a "cough." I didn't know what else to call her "sound" We thought it was asthma, then allergies, I even tried the chiropractor. She also got very serious ear infections. We had her tonsils & adneoids out PLUS tubes in both ears. She turned three and I mean it wasn't days later and it all went away. Just Poof and it was gone. NOW we started with a new problem, she is staring her third bout with bronchitis...does the madness never end! Good luck with your little one. I know how frustrating it is. It seems they never have the right answer for you. Good luck and it does get better :-)

i have a nine month old with the same problems. She too has been on Pepcid since 3 weeks old. The noise will evenutally go away. I really dont give 2 sh**s what anyone else says about her "noise". She too is happy and only miserable when sick, but not really miserable, she justs sounds worse than she is. I can't say that we get ear infections or are sick all of the time. A few runny noses here and there and the past week a bad cough. With all of her noise at least I can't loose her in the house!! I do have to say the noise got worse when she became more active and now that she's walking is not so noticable. Has the ENT checked the size of her tonsils? That may be part of your noise problem. Just too much "stuff" rattling around in her throat. Good luck! Hope everythings works out ok for your daughter!
