My daughter contracted lice a couple of months ago and now we are on treatment number 4! We have treated her 3 times now and her grandmother has treated her once. I don't know how to keep her from getting this back but supposedly all the kids at school have been tested but she keeps coming up with the babies! Any ideas??? HELP - my poor baby was hurting so bad last night after this last treatment... :(
Hey S.! I work from home with a wellness company and you need to get the Herbal Shampoo we have. It will take care of that and also work as prevention to clear it up and not come back. Let me know and email me or also www.livetotalwellness.com/cindygeoff
FYI: Using the chemical products at the store are toxic, dangerous, and won't help at all. Might as well not take the risk with any of those!

Hi S.--I went through the lice thing when my daughter was in kindergarten-(she's 15 now). We found an article in a Parents magazine which suggested putting vasoline on the hair and a shower cap to wear overnight, do this a few times in a row and it works. (I think it's supposed to suffocate the little critters.) It was horrible to clean out but was less expensive and harsh, my daughter had long, thick, black hair at the time so it looked dirty for a while. Just shampoo it out the best you can every day and maybe put it up in a pony tail with a braid which is what we did, to keep it looking ok and somewhat clean. Use the little comb and wash everything and vacuum, I think cleaning things really good once should do it. Good Luck and hang in there!

Try using head and shoulders shampoo. My daughter had dermititis as a baby and I used that or selsun blue. A side effect was that she never got head lice, even after spending the night with a friend we later found out had a full head of lice.

Hi S.,
First question, does someone in your home hunt? Maybe you can buy a new mattress for her and maybe ask if she is putting on another kid's hat when playing at school? I would suggest maybe taking her to a dermatologist to check how far the eggs were laid in her scalp because the medicine isn't killing the eggs COMPLETELY!
Hope this helps some. Good luck!

Please be careful with those treatments they can permeate into the scalp causing brain damage. Check with the pediatrician and show her what bran and how often you have treated her.
A home remedy is to take mayonaise and COMPLETELY cover her entire hair and LEAVE it on all night long (in a plastic hair bag) The mayonaise SUFFOCATES the nits and eggs and alleviates the intense urge to scratch it cools the scalp an is NON TOXIC.
hope this helps you as it did my daughter who is also a lice magnet!

The lice treatment is incredibly toxic. The poison soaks right into the person's body through the scalp. When my son was five we had this same problem and they kept coming back. Finally we got rid of them after several treatments. However, if I had to do it again, I would SHAVE my son's head in a second rather than expose him to the harmful chemicals and the missed school. Its a much quicker and safer solution.
Hair grows back quickly, too.

I have read your problem as well as the responses so far, I am a nurse and a child care provider. I AGREE WITH THEM ALL. I have a step daughter that when she would visit her mom we would have the same thing go on. Once after a "chemical" treatment she continued to pull out 28 more live ones...we taped them to a piece of paper to show her mom. We have found that putting the wintergreen alcohol into a spray bottle and soaking her head with it, place a plastic bag or shower cap on until the child says it feels hot. Wash and rinse as usual. We also went to the natural food store and bought tea tree oil to put in all of our shampoos. This way she could take it to her moms. It has a smell to get used to, but feels wonderful in a bath...use about 1 teaspoon/ 16 ounces of shampoo, doesn't sound like much, but it worked. Hope this helps...good luck!!! Also, have your school check the headphones they may use when on the computers...that is the only place we could figure it was coming from. We even offered to buy our own head phones, and our school refused saying they didn't want to be responsible for a 7 y/o's electronic accessories...pthuh on them!
Good Luck....

I feel for you, believe me!! A couple of years ago my step-daughter caught lice @ her Mom's house and we would clean it up but every time she would go back she would get it again. Finally when her mom got lice she decided that it might be time to clean things up. Keep in mind that lice removal is a painstaking job. Those lice combs don't do the complete job...you have to go through their hair multiple times and pull them out w/you fingernails to truely get them all. It really stinks and it makes me itch just thinking about it......doing the shampoo treatment too many times is really bad for your scalp too...I was told to get your kid a shower cap, have them stand in the shower and cover their head w/olive oil and put the shower cap on for a couple of hours. This causes the lice to be paralyzed and the oil isn't as harsh as those chemicals. Hope this helps! Don't forget that you need to take all stuffed animals and seal them in bags for a few weeks!

I have heard that lice like clean hair so my sister-in-law would put hair products in her hair. Partly because of the texture of her hair and partly because she heard it would keep lice from, for lack of a better word, sticking to her daughter's hair. She also has dry hair and was told to condition the hair once a month with mayonaise. All of that seemed to help. I hope this helps you and the lice will leave. I got it as a child a number of times and know it is very frustrating. Hang in there.

I can fill for you. I have been throught this with my daughters. It took for one young gal that she played with to move away to get rid of them. Also olive oil treatments work great. put the oil on the hair at night, make sure it covers the head from the scalp out. If you have a shower cap put it on or just wash the pillow case the next day. Wash her hair just once and it still might be oily but that is okay. Do the picking like you would for a normal treatment. The lice can not hold on to the hair shaffs with the oil. It takes maybe three days to get it all out of the hair. Also you need to stay on top of the school to send the kids who do have it back home.
Best of luck,

Hi S.,
My girls go ti once and passed it to me (I have the longest and fuller hair you cna imagine) We used LiceFreee! That is the name, it is homeopatic (I know....I thought it was not going to work) But my daughter was one at that time and didn't want to poisson her head.
I got it at Wallgreens but I think they have it at wallmart for less.
Just follow the instructions, I also purchased the spray and sprayed all over the house, washed all the blankets and sheets and even the pillows.
They were gone faster than I thought. I did check and rechecked for eggs every day and also used the fine comb that comes with the product every day with a lot of conditioner, conditioner looses the eggs.
It was a lot of work, but it was worth it, better one time done right that working for ever:)
Get a really good conditioner and soak their hair in that for a few minutes after the tratment, it also helps the itchy scalp.
Hope it helps....good luck!

Hi, Iam a hairdresser and here are some tips. First, you must treat everyone in the house, treat carpets curtains, matresses, throw away stuffed animals!!!!! Change pillows, wash hats, bleach combs, brushes, etc. Also, send your childern to school with product in their hair( gel, hairspray....). I spray hairspray on my 1st grader every morning. This makes it hard for them to grab hold!!!

We had lice recently and from other people I've talked to, have her take off her clothes from school and immediately wash them in hot water (or put in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes). Also, someone told me that washing their hair with a tea-tree oil shampoo helps deter the bug; as well as blowdrying the hair on high heat and putting gel or hairspray on because the lice don't like dirty hair. Have you sterilized or thrown away your brushes/combs? Also, maybe suggest to the school that they have the kids put their backpacks in a trashbag while they are at school.

Oh S.,
Coming from a mom who JUST got over this ordeal 5 weeks ago- I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!
Here's what I read on some websites (I googled head lice treatments): LOTS of real mayo on the head- 6-8 hours using a shower cap. Because you really shouldn't use the treatment too much (that's what my dr's office told me) b/c the chemicals are SOOOOO harsh. Also, lice DO LOVE clean hair. The natural oils in the hair coat the hair shaft and they can't get a grip.
Another website also recommended tree tree oil shampoo. I went and bought some from fantastic sams and it works great. The peppermint oil in it repels them from the head.
Some things to know: PETS CANNOT GET HEAD LICE. Every stuffed toy, barbie, anything with hair or fuzz should be bagged in a plastic bag or container with a lid and set outside or in a garage. (My stuff is STILL outside- mostly b/c I'm paranoid) You should let it sit outside for at least 2 weeks. All clothes and linens should be washed in hot water and dried on HOT. If you can't wash something, take it to the dry cleaners. I took nearly every stich of clothing we had and went to the laundry mat. It was easier for me b/c I was overwhelmed!
I never tried the mayo or the vegetable oil on the hair, but I have read several places that it does work well.
When I did the second treatment on my daughters head I seperated it all out and did small sections and made SURE I coated every single strand of hair. You have to work a little quickly b/c you aren't supposed to leave it on that long. I then put her in the tub when the time was up and washed it out and while her hair was still very damp, put the combing gel on her hair just like the shampoo treatment- seperated the sections and got every strand. I let that sit for about 10 minutes or so and then washed that out as well. I combed through her hair one strand at a time (DO NOT BLOW DRY IT- It damages the effectiveness of the shampoo chemicals) and then set her to bed. I then went to the kitchen and got a BIG glass of wine!!
It's an exhausting task. The only way we got rid of it was washing her sheets every night, spraying her bed, constant vacuuming and spraying all the furniture in the house.
I really hope you get some resolution soon, her poor head!!!
Good luck!!

My daughter went through the same thing when she was in 4th grade (she's 30 now). I finally threatened to shave her head - we just couldn't get rid of the eggs. I'm not sure if her grandmother fixed it or not - she gave her a perm (without my permission!) and the eggs disappeared. I don't know for sure if the perm did it or the RID treatments finally worked. She had eggs in her hair that the doctor said were dead, but the school wouldn't let her back in until the eggs were gone - dead or not! Good luck with this - you have my sympathy! :)

Hi S.!
My parents and my in laws used to use pure rubbing alcohol, and a shower cap. I got it every single year, sometimes more than once. They would soak my entire head in alcohol and cover it with a shower cap for about 30 mins. That will suffocate them and then it was so much easier to get the eggs and stuff out. I was always told they love dirty very thick hair, because it was warm. I was always told they love warmth, so we washed my hair in cold water after the treatment. I have very very very long thick dark hair. I would make sure that you boil combs and brushes of everyone in the house, I would also make sure that you wash all the clothes, and treat everyone. Also make sure that your spraying your house, and every possible thing yall own with Rid. We sprayed every piece of furniture, stuffed animals bathrooms, kitchen chairs and everything, because I kept getting it. My mom had very very thin hair, so she never got it. It dries the hair out a little, but all you have to do is make sure you use a good conditioner. I hope this helps! BLESSINGS!

The key to lice is taking care of EVERYTHING! Make sure you are washing bed linens in the hottest water available and drying them on the HOT setting. They have the spray to use on the mattresses, carpets and anything that you can't wash. Be sure to bag all toys that are soft and material or fuzzy, when we had lice in our house last month ALL the stuffed animals and baby dolls, decorated pillows, bratz and barbies went into trashbags; which were tied tight and placed in the basement. They have to be bagged for at least two weeks; we haven't opened them yet just to be sure. Don't forget winter coats, car seats, the couches and chairs that are material, and any blankets that may be on them. Vacuum her room and any other rooms that she may be in. When combing through her hair with the "lice/nit" combs take your time, and you can comb the hair between treatments. My husband was able to get through a whole head in the amount of time it took me to handle one little section (he got demoted to hair washer after that). They have the combing gel, but you can also use vinegar to loosen the "glue" of the egg, and veggie oil to ease the combing. Make sure that all of the same steps are being done at her other house if she goes there too. Maybe even send a bag to school for her to put her coat in, to prevent the spread to or from her. Check her daily for any eggs or nits and the rest of your family, don't forget to have someone check you too, Moms are important! I wish you the best of luck!

I have done so much research and tried so many products over the last 4 years- even the pesticidal ones that don't work and are very bad for the little ones and everyone in general. My daughters used to get lice all the time from school. Seems like there is always a few families that still send their kidz to school knowing they have lice. Then all the kids in the class get it...multiple times for months on end. So finally i have found a very stress free way of dealing with it that the pediatrician reccomended. She found a company that sells these preventative products that really work and my kids no longer get it. I use these everyday from sept-jan. and they are non-toxic and my kids love the smell. The name of the manufacturer is LiceLogic and think u can buy online. Good luck!

I think that your problem might be that the treatments are either not working due to the fact that the bugs have developed a resistance to the particular chemical that you are using, or you are not getting rid of the nits. The nits are the eggs that are layed on the hair shaft and attached with a very strong adhesive made by the parent bug. A quality nit comb will help, but you will need to comb your dauther's hair with it a few times to make sure you get all the eggs. Could I suggest that you check out http://nolice.blogspot.com/ ? This is a business started by another mom who was concerned about the chemicals in the lice treatments at the drug store and what the side effects might be.

Everyone seems to have the same advice, but it's about right. You have to keep at it. Also, if you are sure you are getting all the nits, rechecking each week, and she is coming up with more lice, someone else she is around may be the culprit. If her hair is long, keep it pulled back tight in a ponytail and braid, or even better, a bun. At school, have her put her coat in her backpack, not on the hooks with all the other coats. You can also purchase a plastic cover for the matress if the spray is out of your range, especially seeing how many times you have already treated her. Those chemicals are dangerous, and some absorption through the skin occurs each time you treat her. Be sure and treat everyone in the house each time, including pets. Cover the furniture if possible too. 2 weeks of living in plastic wrap is better than more chemicals for your little one.
I certainly feel your pain. My daughter was sent home 3 time in kindergarten for lice, and after investigating it, found out there was another girl that was infecting the whole class. I made sure my daughter knew who it was, and told her to try and sit away from her at carpet time and lunch. Sounds mean, but my daughters hair was blonde, long, thick, and VERY HARD to treat, along with the fact that I had extremely long hair myself, so it was a double whammy each time. Good luck. Keep us posted on what worked for you.

I so feel your pain!!! A couple of years ago we were struck with lice at our house. My 3 year old, 9 month old and myself all got it. However, I did not want to use mayonaise or the pesticides (that's what's in the treatment.) So, here's what I did, it took about a week, but they were gone and have not returned.
1. Bought those Rid combs and began combing my kids hair with them. (If you are diligent, you can comb all those lice out of heaads, but we did it several times a day.)
2. Wash hair and then use a blow dryer, curling iron and hair spray (I did not do this with the baby, but did with the 3 year old. We called it playing beauty shop.)
3. There's a soap we bought, a mild skin cleaner, and I'd put that on their hair a couple of times. I can't remember what it's called (I know, very helpful, but I don't think it worked the best, I think the best thing was combing and blowdrying. Those little things HATE heat!

Head lice was going around my little girls school a couple of years ago. She got it and then I got it from her, not only that the neighbor girls got it also. We all tried everything, we went to the laundry mat and washed everything, etc.
I finally found something called Head Lice Remedy. Go to www.headliceremedy.com and order this. You mix it in some mineral oil (cheap) and put it in your hair before bed every other night. You have to use dish soap to get it out in the morning - but the benefit is; after a couple weeks of doing this, the head lice is gone!!! All of my neighbors also used mine and got rid of the lice also. You don't have to wash anything and you are not putting poison on your child's head nor spraying poison in the house.

Soooo... one day I bought the spray, striped all the beds, and sprayed them. I washed all the pillows, sheets, bedspreads, couch pillows, every thing that would fit in the washer (or laundromat washer) in the hottest water I could get (with bleach and color safe bleach). I sprayed the catpets, couches, chairs, anything with cloth. I washed the curtains too. To this day... (8 years later) No more lice. Good luck and take care. B. :)

i read most but not all of the responses so i apologize if this is a repeat:
I agree with everyone about treating the whole house but i wanted to add that after vacuuming EVERYTHING - including mattresses - take the vacuum bag to the trash outside your home immediately otherwise you could have a reinfestation.
Depending on how far apart her "outbreaks" are determines if you are not getting them all or if someone outside the home has passed on a new case. I'm not sure what the time frame is but your pediatrician or nurse should know.
And i wanted to reiterate that lice like clean hair. Using hair product everyday helps.
Good luck. it's a lot of work but hopefully this will be your last time.
My daughter had it 3 times in the first quarter of school one year. I itched the whole day just thinking about what i was trying to get rid of. ick!

My family had lots of problems with Lice when I was a kid. My Mom finally heard to use a shampoo with coconut oil (listed as cocamide mea in the ingredients) to prevent getting them. They do not like the coconut for some reason. Lots of shampoos have this ingredient so it is not hard to find. I don't believe that it actually gets rid of them if you have a full blown case but it will prevent them from coming back.

Make sure to coat the hair well and i put a plastic bag on her head and clip it like they do at the beauty shop. let it set for at least 15 minutes. Then i rinse it out and wash it with dawn dish soap. Then use the nit comb to get the nits out. It work for us. Just make sure to treat the beds and pillows all at the same time. I also found it useful by spraying the bed then vacumming after it has dry. Good Luck!
then recheck in 7-10 days to make sure there is no new hatchings.
