My 3 year old daughter has had chronic eye styes since Feb. She has had up to 4 on the same eye at the same time. She has never complained that they hurt but they look like she has been in a fight!! We have gone to the doctor and a pediatric opthomologist. We have used every over the counter remedy, prescription medication, antibiotics and are now on to homeopathic remedies. Right now we are using Johnsons Baby shampoo to wash her eyelashes/lid once a day and it seemed to be helping but now there are 3 new ones starting to form. She just started preschool and all the other kids are looking funny at her and the other moms are giving her "that look" of stay away because you may give something to my kid!!! Does anyone have any ideas of what we can do or what my help???

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the information!! I ended up using the boric acid treatment - which sounds terrible but it is really just soft cotact solution. I put it on a cotton ball and set it over her eye. The styes were gone within 2 days!! We found out that there was an underlying problem - she had an inner eye infection that nobody caught because of the styes. That came out with a vengence and we ended up in the emergency room with the eye swollen shut, goop coming out non stop and a 101 degree fever. We are on heavy antibiotics and an eye cream and 24 hours later the eye looked really good (considering where we were the day before!). We are seeing an opthamologist (M.D.) to make sure that the infection has not spread to any other areas of the face and even some concern over it spreading to the brain.

Overall, Gracie's eye should heal up and be back to normal within a week or so!
Thanks so much for all the infomation - you guys are the best!!

Hi S.,
To rid the eye of styes soak a tea bag in the hottest water your daughter can stand and place it on her eye lid for 5 minutes at a time. You can do this several times a day. It works wonders. Most styes are gone within 24 hours. It is an old remedy that my grandmother taught me and it has never failed.
Good Luck,
J.

You may want to ask them to culture the drainage from the eye as it could be a drug resistant strain of the staph bacteria. We had the same thing with boils on our 18 month old. The whole family ahd to be treated with antibacterial ointment in the nose(as any of us could have been the carrier) along with washing her with special soap, treating her nose, treating her skin infection and oral Bactrim. Just a though.

Hi S.,
Stop washing the eye with Johnson's baby shampoo. The shampoo does not sting the eyes because it has an ingredient to close the eye duct. Just cut your babies sugar intake and try to boost her immune system. Aslso, rub her eye with a warm clean washcloth. I am The Johnson's is not helping. WATER ON THE EYES!!! Good luck! My baby was having problems when she was born.

I remember having sytes when I was a kid and my mom would boil water and boric acid(you can get at any drug store or pharmacy). She would let it cool and soak a wash cloth in the warm liquid and put it on my eye, it worked every time. I agree to stay away from the antibiotics and soap. Obviously, try to keep her from touching her eyes as much as possible. Hope something works for her! Good luck!

I don't know about multiple stys, but a couple times that I've ever had them, my mother told me to sit back with a warm washcloth over the eye. The idea was that the warmth and moisture would open the pore and hopefully release whatever is in there.

I feel for you. Sounds like you have your hands full. I use to work in an eye doctors office. I know how hard it is to keep a child from putting there hands in there eyes when they hurt. I found this web site for you I hope it helps.(http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/styes.htm) Remember nobody knows your children like you. You might want to read up on chalazion. Also the best place to take her is a M.D. eye doctor. good luck

S.,
I have gone through the same thing w/ my son who just turned 5. He was getting sty's at least once a month. He had one that lasted at least a month. Did the same as you, went to the ped & the ped opth. The meds seemed to take quite a while to work. The baby shampoo is the only thing that works (my brother and father also were very prone to stye's) My suggestion is to do it more than once a day, for prevention and to do a warm compress (washcloth, teabag) a few times a day. It has worked for us, he hasn't had a stye in months (knock on wood)! Good luck!
