My 6 year old was born at St. Joseph's. I had an "unusual" labor and was very unhappy with how they handled it. If you expect any "easy" labor, I am sure it's really nice, but that was not my experience.
They kept me on a TALL gurney that I couldn't get on and off of on my own (I am not tall) in a tiny curtained room until I told them I'd go have the baby on the lawn if they'd give me something for the pain.
That's when they moved me to a birthing room - to give me the epidural - and I think I could have managed much longer without it if I'd been in that comfy room for the 9+ hours they kept me on the gurney. I ended up having a C-Section, which may have happened regardless, but they definitely were into doing it and VERY HAPPY about how many they did that day.
Also...while the docs and and nurses in delivery were AMAZING, all but one of my maternity ward nurses were shockingly rude. I hope it's changed since then. It was truly shocking. One of the nurses went so far as to direct ALL questions regarding my son to my husband WITH HER BACK to me, and when I answered her, she turned around and snarled, "I wasn't talking to you." Seriously!
My surgeon had to change my urine bag when he checked on me the morning after my surgery. The nurse who had checked it told the nurse in training that it was not their job - even though it was about to back up into me and I couldn't move around yet!
I have NO IDEA why the nurses were so nasty to me, but I really can't think of ANY GOOD reason!
I have heard nice things about Rose, but then, I have heard nice things about St. Joe's too.
I suggest you check to see if the hospital publishes it's C-Section rate on it's website and look for one that is < 15%. A hospital that is proud of a low C-section rate is one that is less likely to make a $-based decision about your care.
Also, my 3rd son was born at St. Luke's and I loved them. One of the big differences was that there were no orderlies - just nurses, so there was no "not my job" attutude about care. There was no cushy maternity ward (though it was in construction), but I will take CARING NURSES and SUPPORTIVE CARE over cushy rooms (that I didn't really get to use) any day.
I did have a C-Section at St. Lukes' as well. And they handled it in as empowering a way as possible. My docs for son 3 were "Westside Women's Care."
Good luck to you! And congratulations!
