I got my daughter's at the Gunnie Sax outlet in SF - It was only $10.00 - needed a small amount of mending - but so much more appropriate than the ones we found in the mall.
"My daughter is graduating in June from 6th grade and I am having trouble finding a place that sells appropriate dresses for her age. The dresses are either too old or too young. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Some consider it a bit stodgy, but it's a tried and true for me: try JC Penney. Good luck shopping!
hi S.,
i actually make dresses, and i can make it to your specifications because they are all handmade right now. i've heard from many moms that they have a hard time finding clothes for "tweens". i've made the dress before for teri hatcher's daughter, she's about the same age as your daughter and she loves it. check out my website and let me know if you are interested. i could have the dress for you by the date you need. you can check out my business reviews on this site under Twirlygirl Reversible Dresses.
AND she can design it herself!

Betsy Johnson makes Fabulous party dresses that I find entirely appropriate for all ages.
I am not sure where you live but i went out yesterday to the cabazon outlets and i went to oshgosh and they had really nice decent clothes for girls. None of that hoochie stuff. And a really good price. They went up to size 12. I was so glad to finf that store it had great prices. Good luck
Hi S.,
A nice place to find a graduation dress that's appropriate for your daughter would be Kohl's or JC Penneys. They have some dresses that just right for girls her age. I do agree that some have dresses to either extreme. Is there a 'Limited Too' @ your local mall or even Mervyns may carry some age appropriate dresses for your daughter. Try the outlet malls in your area too. Hope you find one soon.
S.,
OH I remember being that age and having the same problem.
I'm not sure how formal, your graduation is, but I used to work at Davids Bridal and we had a lot of preteen dresses that were nice and if you got them on the clearance rack, dirt cheap!!!! They have some nice jr bridesmaids dresses that have nice modest neck line and back cuts too and not everything there is super formal...
Good Luck,
H.
I love -limited too- i bought my daughter her graduation out fit there they have tween sizes. A bit pricey but worth it. hope this helps!
If you live anywhere near downtown LA, you can check out Santee St north of Olympic - lots of shops with dresses for all ages - it's where I got the dresses for my flower girls (9 yrs old) for my wedding and they were very sweet and not too expensive. It's a fun experience to shop down there too - although weekends are CRAZY! If you can go on a weekday, it'll be much easier to park and walk around.
My daughter's favorite store is www.TwirlyGirlShop.com They have really unique dresses. Stuff you won't find anywhere else.
Does it have to be a dress? During our 6th grade ceremonies, many of the girls wear a nice skirt ensemble. I saw many cute dresses at JC Penny's during the Holiday season that were age appropriate.
Everyone so far has had some GREAT suggestions. For my 8th grade grad (my school district didn't do 6th Grade grad) My mom took me to a Jessica McClintock Outlet. (Was Huntington Beach, don't know if it's still there.) If it's formal, I would defintely try a bridal shop and look at their Jr. Braidsmaid selections. If it's semi-formal, JCPenney's has a great Jr.'s department. You can also check Sears, although I am not sure how wipe their selectin is. (We try to shop Sears for anything we can, because they offer SO much support to the families of their staff that are serving in active milatary. They go WAY beyond what the law requires. Check the site below for more info.)http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/sears.asp
Hope it helps, ~J.
If you go online to www.magickidsusa.com you should be able to find something. Not only will you find dressy, age-appropriate attire for your daughter but they also offer name brand casual wear for kids at a whopping 50-70% off retail! Be sure to enter source code MK32528 when ordering. Good luck on finding what you need & please be sure to tell your family & friends about the site. Congratulations on your daughter's graduation. You must be very proud of her!

Depend on what size your daughter is! but if she is exactly her age size you can go to "limited too" they have nice stuff over there and Im pretty sure she'll like it! also there are so many options for her! just let me know what size she wears and how she likes to dress! I love fashioN! And Ill be more than glad to help U girls!
Dear S.,
Maybe go to the petite section of Ross - they seem to have a lot simple, nicely designed dresses.

Kohl's actually has some very nice dresses in their kids and junior departments. Otherwise Mervyn's is another great store too. It's been a while since my 6th grader can fit into kids clothing. My daughter has a wide build up top so junior sizes fit her better.
limited too has cute tween clothes, childrens place has some cute ones, even target online has adorable age appropriate dresses!! (good prices too)
I have noticed the same thing at all the stores. Someone told me to get a summer dress and put a blouse to it instead of the speg strings. Plus i seen this on T.V.
It all looks beautiful and if she doesnt like it then a skirt with a blouse. But i have seen these shirts as well, they are way to short and some were made longer for us. But i have seen cute clothes in small stores.Look in the catologs. Some are only able to order them.
Thats what i have done.
Good luck S.!

Have you tried Old Navy? Their clothes are both inexpensive and durable. They have all their summer stuff out now. I bet you could find something there. Also check them out online, they always have different stuff on their website.
