S.M.
We went to Galena on our honeymoon and loved it. It was in November, so, it would probably be even more beautiful this time of the year. Many years ago before I even started dating my husband I went with a serious boyfriend to Door County, Wisconsin. I can't remember the name of the town, but we went to this really neat b & b and our room was down the hall - you had to turn this bookcase to get to the hall. There were muffins and coffee and juice left in the morning and a nice hot tub and fireplace in the room. Other then that, I'd suggest staying downtown Chicago - you could just take metra in, stay one or two nights in a hotel and go to dinner, walk along lake michigan, see a show... We stayed a couple of years ago at the Sofitel. It's a french hotel in the Gold Coast area. The beds were sooooooo luxurious. I see someone else recommended St. Joseph, Michigan. That's not too bad of a drive. My mom grew up there and as a kid, we went to the beach there everytime we visited my grandma. The town is pretty neat. Nice restaurants, a little touristy, with candy shops, and other cute shops. There is Tescornia beach wich is great for swimming and Silver Beach. My mom said that when she was a kid, there was a fun park at one of those beaches. It had rides like the tea cup and saucer rides, a boardwalk with air that blew up (marilyn monroe) and a big slide. They don't have that anymore but it's a cute town that has a lot of history. Also there is an art festival there - you'd have to research it to see what time of the year it is. Another couple of nice Mich towns that are on the lake are South Haven and Saugatuck. Saugatuck is a little more north and has a ton of b & bs. it's really artsy and there are a lot of gays, not that there is anything wrong with that, but just so ya know....hope you enjoy the weekend.
