Looking for a Play Area for 7 Year Old Son with Leukemia

My question comes to those who've known or had a child with leukemia. We (my 7 year old son) was newly diagnosed on January 26, 2009. With all the things we have to worry about, His birthday is on March 1, 2009. I'm looking for some place to host a party that seems more secluded where I can control the amount of people coming. Part of the worry is that his blood counts will be drastically down and there will be increased fear of catching any illnesses. He now has a PORT in his chest for administering chemo drugs and drawing blood so this place can not be full of activities.

I'm looking for a private place where there will not be crowds of people but reasonably priced. Any idea's?

What can I do next?

There is a place in Edina in their community center called "The Works" www.theworks.org. It's a science-museum type place, but smaller than the Children's Museum. There's hands-on stuff to touch and interact with, but it's a much more controlled environment, and not so busy. They do offer birthday packages as well.

Hi B.,

First, I am so sorry. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this must be for your entire family.

Regarding your son's birthday, I own Abrakadoodle which does art parties for kids and would be happy to work with you. We have actually done quite a few parties with Make A Wish Foundation as well as private parties for children who were in various stages of their chemo treatment. We have a large studio in St. Louis Park, one block east of Trader Joes, that is private and not open to the public. We would do an art project with all of the kids, which you choose ahead of time. We can make it as active or as calm as you'd like. As for additional staff, we can restrict the party to just one teacher and one staff from our side to limit the exposure to your son. If you'd like more information please feel free to visit us online at www.abrakadoodle.com/mn01 or call me directly at ###-###-####.

Thanks,
S. Lawrence

Hi there,
There's a place in St. Paul that has a bowling alley in the school basement that you can rent for $100. And they have shoes too, so it would just be your group no one else. I have only heard of this word of mouth, sorry I don't have the name. It's in the west 7th area and a catholic school rents the building....
Good luck,

sometimes libraries have a group room that you can rent for really cheap. ours doesn't have toys and stuff, but you could bring games to play and other party things.
