Looking for a Quality Martial Arts Instructor

My daughter is looking for a martial arts instructor in the far east Dallas/north Mesquite area for her 9-, 6-, and 5-year-old children. The priorities are self-defense, self-confidence and discipline. The youngest has some self-control issues she is hoping this will help with, so patience with children is another need. If you have personally had a good experience with someone in this area for your children please let me know. Thanks

Hi P.,
Hands down, Yims Taekwondo on Greenville Ave. He's been at this for 34 years and is amazing with kids. My son is in his third year. He has a policy of the kids keeping a chart which he issues that shows character development and responsibility. The kids fill out the chart each day ( parents can add on responsibilities as well) . After they reach their goals they are awarded medals in a ceremony. It is a crucial part of the process as TKD is as much about emotional and mental discipline as it is about self defense. The kids continue to do these charts throughout the belt levels and cannot attain black belt status without them.
On a physical level, my child is incredibly strong and at age 11 I feel could give anyone a run for their money if they tangled with him!
Yims has a 29.00 special where you get two lessons and a free uniform so you can check it out!
Good luck.
K

My son takes from Chamberlain studios. He likes it and it seems like a good program. Their main studio is by Bachman Lake, but they also do classes at area rec centers. I know they teach at Ridgewood/Belcher in East Dallas but they may also teach at Lake Highlands rec center or others close by.

There's a new facility that just opened up in Rockwall -- Rockwall Blackbelt Academy. My son has not yet had his evaluation/class, but they seem very personable, kind, and professional there and the space is really neat too. Their young children's programs appear to be a great first exposure to the self-control/respect for others facets of martial arts instruction & I like that.

Check out Mr. Hardy at Evans Recreation Center in Mesquite 1116 Hillcrest St. Mesquite, TX 75149 off of Gross Rd. He teaches there on Thursday nights from 6 - 8 PM. You can come in and view the class or try one out. Check out his web site at www.texasfreestylekarate.com. He is very very good with the kids.

It's important that you find a place close by to make it easier to get to the classes, but also look at the place BEFORE you sign up. A reputable place will let you try out a class and observe classes. Also, never sign a contract.

You should contact Dallas Academy of Martial Arts on Plano Road at Walnut Hill Lane. They've been in the Lake Highlands area for 30 years. They're awesome with children of all ages and adults as well. Their number is ###-###-####
