My daughter is 13. She went to Sky Ranch at 10 and Kickapoo Kamp (Kerrville for girls only) at 9. She did not like either.
It was not home sickness. My daughter is not into lake activities (nor am I) although she is a good swimmer and loves the pool. At both camps, you are told that you do not HAVE to do anything, HOWEVER, she was forced to do some lake activities at Kickapoo (no pool) and at Sky Ranch, when she said she did not want to do the lake activities, she was ridiculed.
I spent about $2000 by the time we flew to San Antonio and got her set up for a week at Kickapoo in Kerrville and she hated it. Then the next year she went with a friend to Sky Ranch (less that $1000) and hated it as well. She did say that she liked Sky Ranch better than Kickapoo.
I guess it depends on your child, his likes and dislikes. We've found that my daughter prefers other things. Last summer she flew by herself on a one way flight to visit cousins and grandparents. That went much better for us.
