Looking for Autism Support Group

My son is 3 and a half and on the autism spectrum. The only support group I have tried so far was for moms with all different kinds of special needs.
Has anyone found a good support group for moms who have kids on the spectrum?
My son is mildly affected and making progress, but I still have a lot of issues. Like knowing he is perfect exactly the way he is, but wanting him to reach his potential at the same time.
Also, I work during the day, so I need something in the evenings.

Hi D.,

I don't know of any support groups in particular, but I know of an organization that deals with young children with autism. I think if you contact Little Friends in Naperville they will most likely be able to refer you to something/someone.

Hope that helps!

I just came across this yesterday and have not contacted the group yet but it is a parent support group for autism and the name is "Autism Support" in Downers Grove they meet the first Friday @month at 7:00pm. Ph# ###-###-#### or 888-691-1270. I am moving into your area for the schools and I will be looking into this support group...I wish you luck.

Hi D.,
My name is H. D.. I am new to Naperville, only been here 3 months. =) I don't know of any Autism groups specifically but I know there is ALOT out there right now! I even read an article today about "pumpitup" having a play time for kids with autism. I have a 19 year old son with Asperger's so I know each stage that you will be going through. These children are very challenging! So, if you need any advice or support give me a call. I am not a "group" but I have been there. ###-###-#### or email ____@____.com luck! H.

Daen -

I have 5 year old twins and one is on the spectrum. I understand that tricky balance. I actually think both feelings are productive. I have done a lot of soul searching here, as well, and I think it is positive to not give up - to work to help them, as long as it is a respectful process, and we are accepting and loving them no matter what happens. In the beginning, I just expected that therapy would do the the trick, and I did not at all understand what I was up against. However, my son has made truly amazing progress, so great things can be accomplished.

I do not know of a support group, per say, but I would be willing to talk if you need someone. Also, we do floortime therapy and biomedical intervention, and I do know other parents that do the same. We often meet monthly to talk, etc. Let me know if you are interested.

I currently take my son (6) to The Communication Clubhouse in Downers Grove. Many of the chidlren in his group Pragmatics in Action are classified as having Apraxia, Aspergers, and Autism. While the boys are in group the moms get their own support group and assistance from the staff. I would look into the group because my son has definitely benefited from this center. You can find them on the web at www.communicationclubhouse.com. There is also a Psychologist there who is wonderful!!! My son sees her weekly and I do on occasion as well. They do accept some insurance policies though my HMO BCBS is not covered, but I find it is worth every penny!
