We have enjoyed camping at Vail Lake Resort (http://www.vaillakeresort.com). It is in Temecula so it is an easy drive. It's a little more expensive than most for camping but the facilities are great. They have grassy areas, 2 pools, one being a great kid pool), miniature golf, hiking and more. We found it perfect for family vacations. It's also good if you don't "love to camp" but want to for the family (if you know what I mean). I understand there are also good campsites in Jullian (near San Diego) as well as in Big Bear. Have a great trip!

My family camps often and my children are now 4 and 7. We also live in Long Beach and prefer to not drive too far. Some of these locations are a little farther than 2 hours, but worth it. Based on what you're looking for I would look at El Capitan State Beach, Carpenteria, Lake Casistas, and San Mateo. You can reserve these on reserveamerica.com. An expanded list I wrote to another mom a couple of months ago is below. Have fun!!!

We, too, love the beach. We favor beaches in Ventura County...El Capitan State Beach, Carpenteria, Faria (county park), Thornhill Broome (part of Point Mugu), Jalama Beach (county park). We have friends who like Refugio, McGrath, Leo Carillo, San Clemente, San Elijo (in San Diego County). We love desert camping at Red Rock Canyon. A fun place for boys to climb!!! We also enjoy Barton Flats, Dogwood, Cuyamaca, Big Sycamore Canyon, Mammoth (mostly Convict Lake and Coldwater), and more. Have heard great things about Lake Casistas and are planning a trip there soon. There are more, but I can't think of all the names right now. Regardless, I think I gave you a good start. Also, a lot of people like Doheny. It's very popular. The campground is nice, but I have issues because the water is always contaminated and we like to play in the water. San Mateo is nice, but not a favorite. Anyway, feel free to email me for more info. And, HAVE FUN!!!

You should go to Lake Casistas. Its flippin' 110 degrees, the toilets totally suck, and the place is freakin' deserted. Watch out deliverence!

I live in LB also two weeks ago I went up to a camp ground called lytle creek, its right off the 15 fwy towards barstow, it took me about an hour and 15 minutes to get there, it was so fun, it has these little small mobile homes you can rent for $ 35.00 a day or you cam bring your camping tents, they have some of the camp sites with grass, the mobile homes were fully loaded with dishes, & sheets, they have 1 & 2 bedrooms, they also have 3 pools one for family one for kids one for adults, they have a arcade free a big one, bingo kareoke, fishing with two lakes ducks to feed squirrels, a resturant, a general store, hiking, I mean it had it all. Now if you wanted to do something just for the day,

Malibu Creek or San Mateo. go to wwww.parks.ca.gov. Malibu has grassy play area and places to ride bikes. San Mateo is a bit dusty but a short drive to San Onofre with nice beaches and hiking - plenty of sticks and rocks for the kids.

Check http://koa.com/where/usa.htm Some are good, some are GREAT, some are barely okay. When we went on a 17 day, half camp, half hotel vacation a couple years ago, we stayed ate 4 or 5 different KOAs. (Kampsites of America)
