Looking for OB in the Plano/Allen/Frisco Area

Hi Moms!

I am looking for recommendations for a good OB for the Plano/Allen/Frisco area. It is not for me but for my cousin. She is moving back to the area from Chicago. She is nearing her 27th week of pregnancy. Let me give you a little back ground. She's a labor & delivery nurse herself, but never practiced here. She will want a doc who will keep a close eye on things but not interfere with a bunch of interventions as a matter of course. She will have an unmedicated delivery so the doc needs to be supportive of that too. She has heard some good things about a Dr. MacDonald (sp?) over at Presby Plano. Any information that you can provide - good or bad - would really be appreciated. She is concerned about delivering at Presby because they have a ridiculously high c-section rate, but she doesn't want to have to drive very far because of some issues that she has had. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to respond to my request. You guys are just awesome. I know how busy everyone is and I really appreciate you taking a moment to sit down and write your thoughts. I forwarded the page to my cousin so she can read everything herself and make her choices from there. Thanks again!

I had a great experience with Frisco OB-Gyn. Drs. Bailey, Petrovsky and someone new that they've added that I haven't seen. Dr. Bailey delivered both of my babies. They are all relatively young and having babies of their own.

I used to live in Allen and went to Dr. Judith Hsu of North Texas OBGYN. I was referred to her by another Dr. office. I moved to Denton in Sept. and still go to her for my annual exam. It is right by Plano Medical Center. Dr. Hsu is EXCELLENT! I wouldn't go to any other doctor. She delivered both of my girls, now age 2 and 3 1/2. I had both of my children at Plano Medical Center.

L.,

Seems that a good place to start would be the Allen Birthing Center. www.allenbirthingcenter.com. The owner/midwife used to be the head of L&D at Presby Dallas. She says it is not uncommon at all for L&D nurses to laugh at women (behind their backs of course) who want a healthy natural delivery. Anyway, all the midwives at the birth center are trained nurses as well. It's a wonderfully supportive atmosphere.

If anything goes wrong, the ambulance dispatch is literally located across the street from the birth center. (Convenient huh!)

The transfer rate is VERY VERY low and the stats of the center are very good. BUT, if a transfer does occur, I think she would go to Presby McKinney. Her care would be assumed by an OB from North Central Women's Health Partners www.NCWHP.com. This practice is obviously openminded, as they have agreed to serve as back up for the midwives. In addition, the office actually HAS a midwife on staff if your friend wants a midwife in a hospital setting.

Hope these two options help her decision! Good luck.

I used Dr. MacDonald, and absolutely adore him. He's delivered my sister's 3 kids (and will deliver her 4th), as well as my other sister's twins. Several of my friends also see him, and pretty much everyone just adores him. He is rock solid, VERY calm, and engages the husband, if he's trying to engage. My husband absolutely loves him-Dr. MacDonald made a point of including him in all conversations, and treated us BOTH as valuable parts of the process. He is the perfect OB, because he's just so freaking calm and reality based all the time. He also listens to everything you have to say, and wants to do for you what YOU want to do. When one of my friends lost her baby while I was pregnant, he spent about an extra half hour with my husband and I to discuss possible causes, and to reassure us about where we were in the pregnancy, and what the milestones they want you to reach, etc.

I ended up with a C section after they attempted cervidil and induction, but after 12 hours, I still wasn't dilating and my son still hadn't dropped or engaged at all, and they still couldn't get in to break my water. Dr. MacDonald was willing to either send me home and let me try again another day, or leave me on the pitosin for as long as I was willing to wait it out. I'm not that patient, though, nor was I that enthralled with vaginal delivery, so...

That being said, although he's not going to push for unnecessary c-sections, he's also not willing to put the mother or baby in jeopardy. If your cousin is committed to vaginal delivery regardless of complications, he's not the doc to see. If her baby ends up breach, he won't deliver vaginally, and if she's ever had a C-section, he won't deliver vaginally.

Good luck in your search!

I use Dr. Julie DaVolio at Plano Medical Center 15th and Coit.
I love her and highly recommend her. All my friends use her. I had a hard time finding an OB as well and I went to several Drs. before I found her. LOVE HER. She just delivered my son in March and we were in a situation where a C-section was possible. She canceled the rest of her patients and stayed with me. Since her commitment was to me and my baby I delivered vaginally. Her team was outstanding. My mother in law is a Labor and Delivery Nurse MGR from a different state and couldn't believe the quality of care I received. She said it was unheard of. She also loved my Dr. Her number is ###-###-#### Goodluck!

I use Dr. Macdonald and I cannot say enough good things about him and his staff. Now, he has yet to deliver a baby for me, but he has been helping for a few months in my attempt to get pregnant, and he has been kind and understanding. Most of all, he has listened to me when I say what I want. Good luck with finding a doctor.

L., I would highly recommend Dr. Katrina L. Lee, MD at Plano Presby. She can be reached at ###-###-####. She did her residency in Chicago. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Lee. I have recommended her before at MamaSource and have many friends who go to her, all of whom are very satisfied. Have your cousin make an appointment with Dr. Lee to talk with her and see if she likes her and if they are in agreement on the way your cousin wants her pregnancy to play out so-to-speak as far as the doc is concerned. I don't think she will be disappointed. Your a great cousin and friend to be helping her in this way. Have a blessed day!

Hi L.:

I have been practicing at Plano Presby for 12 years. If your friend wants to use a therapy ball for laboring, she cannot do that. They also do not let the moms walk in the halls. Your friend will labor in her room.

Dr. Mac is awesome. He delivered my second child, but my OB is his partner JP Roberts, M.D. They are both terrific, supportive, and will work with your friend.I recommend many friends and professionals to them and everyone has always been pleased. Dr. MacDonald's/Dr. Roberts number is ###-###-####.

I delivered my daughter through Dr. MacDonald at Presby Plano and he was WONDERFUL! I did have a medicated delivery but I can see him as being very supportive of whatever you choose. He's very relaxed and easy going about the entire process. His nurses are very friendly as well. I believe he's the chief of ob there too? When I was at Presby Plano for the delivery, my delivery nurse informed me that all the nurses "fight" to work with him because he's so nice. I recommend him to all my friends. Hope that helps!

I use Dr. Tania White-Jackson at Plano Presby. She is very open to my suggestions, likes/dislikes... She is in the Harmony Women's Group on the 3rd floor with a group of other women that I've met but not had to actually see. Liked them all. Dr. Jackson also has practicing privileges at the new Baylor Frisco where she delivered my daughter last year (amazing place and excellent/quality care-we felt as if we were the only patients in the building) and will deliver my next one in February. She also now will see expecting mothers for their monthly visits at Baylor one day a week. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hmm, how do I put this? I have not heard much about Dr. Macdonald. However, I do some Doula work, and can tell you, that if she wants an intervention free birth, Plano Prsby may not be where she wants to deliver. Their c-sec rate is sky high. I attended a birth there, and when everyone found out she wanted to "go natural", the campaign for an epi began in earnest. (this was from the l&d nurses.) The Allen Birth Center is great, if she is interested in Midwife assisted birth. Some of the Baylor hospitals, I've heard good things about. She might also try Dr. Suzette Boyd, in Frisco. She seems pretty laid back about interventions.
Good Luck

Hi L.,
I would second the suggestion to look at a midwife assisted birth if she wants to go with little to no interventions. There is a birth center in front of Baylor Dallas called the Birth and Women's Center; they are great! They have a wonderful working relationship with the doctors at Baylor Dallas if she needs to transfer to a hospital - the doctors know when they are referred someone from the Center that they want as little intervention as possible and C-section is an absolute last resort. So, I would check them out, and if she doesn't want a birth center, I'm sure they could recommend a doctor that would support her unmedicated birth. (When I checked into delivering at Presby, they couldn't even give me a price for the delivery without pitocin and an epidural. They had no idea what it would be.)

So funny you mention Dr. McDonald. He is the best. I started going to him 1/2 way through my first pregnancy, my son was diagnosed at 12 weeks interuterine with Down Syndrome and our doc at the time was giving us all negative information and even suggested pregnancy termination. We switched to Dr. McDonald through advice from a good friend and we absolutely adore him, he spent almost an hour with us during our first appt. He was so supportive of us and has the best bedside manner. Now my mom and both sisters changed to him and several of my friends too. She would love him!!!

Presby Allen is the best hospital to have a baby in. They encourage the family to try to deliver vaginally and give everyone the best chance, the staff are very supportive and accept doulas and have a jacuzzi to help with labor pains.
It is the only hospital in this area that do not take the baby away after delivery and keep family together to learn together. Pick an OB that works there and you will never regret it. They have lamaze classes and excellent breast feeding support. They call themselves "the family Birth place".

Dr. Ralph Turner at Presby Plano. Very old-school, no-frills, and has delivered over 4,000 babies (part of that during time in the army). He has delivered 2 of my 3 babies. He is not big on inducing, and certainly not fond of the high c-section rate. Another plus, he arranged for my husband to take pics during both deliveries. He had me completely draped, so I was not visible, so I can show the pics to anyone -- and they are amazing. Much better than video! I love him. ###-###-####. J.

I see Dr. Suzette Boyd in Frisco at ###-###-####. She a working mom of 4. And a master multi-tasker. Always personable, and listens to your needs. I was over 35 for both kids, and considered high risk being AMA (advance maturnal age, how offensive), and she was wonderful! Her office is in the Baylor medical offices at Lebanon/Warren. I know she delivers at Plano Presby. but may at Cenntential too. I'm not sure. I had both my 2 kids at Plano Presby. Neither of them by C-sect. My first was with Dr. Jill Farmar (only GYN now, no OB), and the second with Dr. Boyd. Both vaginal births, and my dtr. (my second) was a healthy 8 lbs, 3 oz. and completely natural. I loved my experience with Plano Presby.

K. M (part time working mom of a near kindergarten son, and a high maintenence 2 1/2 girl, both red headed, like me.
