Hi, I am wanting to know what other working moms do when their babies get sick. My 9mo old son recently had roseola and had to stay home for almost a week because of fevers. Luckily my mother was able to come into town to help, but I am realizing I need a plan for the next time he gets sick. What does everyone else do? Are there any sick care facilities here in Dallas? Are they anygood? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hello,

I don't know where you live, but I know that both Presbyterian Hosptial of Plano and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas both have sick kid care. Coughs and Cuddles at Plano, and Kid Med in Dallas. They are both located on campus at their daycare centers. They do an awesome job and accept people from the community even if you do not go to that daycare. They take kids with fevers, diahrrea and many other things that would otherwise exclude them from regular daycare. Hope that helps. I have used the one in Dallas and highly recommend them.

I just wanted to add to Wendy's response. Coughs and Cuddles at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano takes only sick children; they don't accept any healthy children. I've never had to use them, but I've heard nothing but great things about their program. I've called them several times and have come close to taking my daughter there, but every time my husband and I have been able to juggle things around and avoid the extra expense.

Unfortunately, I think you are seeing the limitations of child care. It sounds like you are in the same situation we are in - little to no family in town. Like you, when our daughter is sick we usually beg one of our mothers to fly to Dallas. Take heart, my daughter is almost two and has been in child care since she was 3 months old. After about six months in child crae she stopped getting sick often.

Best of luck!

I am a childcare provider would not allow a child to come to my facility and risk the other children getting sick, try and put yourself in their shoes I don't think you would be happy if another mother brough their child to a childcare facility sick and got your child sick, I know I wouldn't. Yes, I know it put you in a burden w/work but that is the price we have to pay as a mother and father. I know a lot of parents switch off who takes care of the child while the other works while the child is sick.
I am a single mother and thank god I have my parents help and support and I know if for some reason my parents can't take care of the baby and if all else fails I would go to my ex and his parents or a friend.
I know once I finish school and start working out of the home that is something that I will have to bring up to my employer before hand, that is one of the main reasons I decided to stay home w/my son and take care a few children from my home because my son was getting very sick at the day cares and in home daycare every time i turned around and being a single mom I couldn't risk missing all the time and paying dr bills and prescriptions.

I really don't think there is a childcare out there that accept sick children especially w/a fever and they have to be fever free for at least 48 hrs as well as if the children is miserable and seems to be sick the facility will call the parent to pick them up and will require a dr's note. I know this because I have worked at several day care facilities through my years.

Good Luck!
