Losing a Pet... - Omaha,NE

I just found out that our neighbor's Great Dane was hit by a car this evening and killed. This neighbor (a guy) lives two houses down from us. Earlier this year, his wife, their daughter, and 2 of their 3 dogs moved out due to separation/impending divorce. (I heard the news from his wife, who is also very distraught. ). It was just him and the Dane living in their house, now just him. My family and I are big animal lovers and have 2 dogs of our own. We're very sad, but also concerned about our neighbor. We're friendly with him, but not very close. I want to do something, just not sure WHAT to do? Any suggestions/ideas? Not sure anything will comfort him right now, but would like to do something to show him that we're thinking of him.

What can I do next?

I think the others are on the right track...a sympathy card and some home made brownies, what man doesn't like some home-made brownies?

~Hate hearing stuff like this b/c it makes my mind wander to the day when I will have to deal with this same thing and I just don't want to go there...

A card. On the loss of your pet. I am sure he would appreciate it.

Hallmark makes pet sympathy cards. When our friend's dog passed away unexpectedly from bone cancer at 2 years, we bought her a card and a pie. I'm always about cards and food when someone passes away, and pets can be just as important.

My dog died on 10-14. Something attacked him and he made it home before he died. I still miss him.

I think, if I lived close, but wasn't a close friend, I'd send him a sympathy card about losing a close friend (the dog) and how you wish him well.

That would have gone a long way with me.

I'll start looking to find another friend after Christmas. I'll be busy until then. (See my profile photo.)

Good luck to you and yours.

Our neighborhood pet store has pet oriented greeting cards. When my brother's dog died I bought one that was a sympathy card for losing one's pet. I think that just a note expressing your sympathy would be appreciated.

When my neighbor lost their pet, I bought them a card and a flowering plant which they put in the front yard. Every year it blooms and we think of their dog.

Some men won't even open nor read the card. I gave a card to my roommate once when his dog died. It sat on his desk unopened for a month. I don't know if he ever opened it.

So - just verbally telling him you're there for him if he needs it, invite him over for dinner, or maybe even make him a meal would be the best option I think.

I would make him some cookies or bread or something similar. A card would be nice, but I would guess that a man would appreciate a snack more :)

Get him a sympathy card and make a memorial donation to a local animal rescue. When you're walking your dogs, stop by and see if he'd like to go with you.

S., So sorry to hear about your neighbors Dane. My Dane just died one week ago, today, very unexpectedly. The hole in my heart feels enormous right now. What has helped me in the last few days is people just showing that they care. A card is nice. If he's all alone, he might appreciate a casserole or a dessert. Mainly, just letting him know how sorry you are and letting him know that it's ok to be sad.

We lost our sweet dog last April and wow was it tough on all of us. We did receive some sympathy cards and that was actually comforting I thought.
Maybe you could make him some muffins or cookies or even a casserole or dinner food. I bet he would appreciate the gesture. He's lucky to have a kind neighbor like you!

A card and a small donation to a local Shelter would be very thoughtful!

What a wonderful neighbor you must be. When I lost my 13 year old wolf-hybrid Savannah, my friends all knew how devastated I was. I received beautiful heartfelt sympathy cards, casseroles, baked goods, etc and lots and lots of hugs. I can't express how much I appreciated their kindness, consideration and compassion for my loss.

honestly theres really nothing you can do-i just went thru the same thing this last wkend-i rescue dogs-i got a min pin 3 weeks ago-pretty well starved to death-he was a great dog-i was going to keep him-but the healthier he got the more bullish he became with my other 2 rescued dogs-so i thought i found him the perfect home-single man no other pets in the house etc.didnt charge him a dime-im all about finding the good home-he took him home fri,5pm by 6pm he was dead-he went to the liquor store his roomate let him out to backyard-he escaped and was tragically hit by a car.im still devestated today..i may have only had him 3 weeks but i developed a great relationship with him-letting him go was hard as hell-but i thought it was in his best interest.i guess not.his dog was his best friend..really nothing you can do or say-will mend his broken heart at this point-outside of getting him a puppy-but he may not be ready-after my dogs tragic accident im done with fostering n rescues-my critters of all been pretty tolerant of all the rescues ive brought home-but its not fair to put them thru anymore...or myself...
