I gained 60 lbs. during my pregnancy. I now have a beautiful ten month old son and about thirty extra pounds. I am still breastfeeding and I have heard that helps you lose weight. I was wondering are there any of you that have a go to diet and exersise that plan that you used after having a baby to lose the extra weight? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Yes, breastfeeding will really help shed the pounds. I breastfed for about 8 months and the weight just fell off. However, it does tend to creep back slowly after the first year and a half. Getting out on those walks and getting on the treadmill when it is time is helpful too.

I bought the Fit Yummy Mummy program and lost my remaining baby weight in 6 weeks. If I were more consistent I know I would have a flat tummy, but I'm lazy when it comes to exercise. If you are consistent with it it really does work!! The ebook is only $40.

Here's something I learned after I weaned my first-your body will hang onto an extra 5-10 lbs of weight over your pre-pregnancy weight. I couldn't figure out why I carried 10 lbs and read this info once I stopped nursing at 16 months.

The biggest thing for me when I want to lose weight is to move! But it has to be the kind of movement that your body responds to. Walking does nothing for me but if I run even just a little it starts to work, if I do step aerobics or yoga that works. So find what you enjoy that works for your body and go with it 3-4 times per week.

As far as diet I don't believe in crazy meal plans. Just avoid excess sugar (like sodas, candy), eat lots of veggies, lean proteins, fruit in moderation, eat breakfast and small meals so you aren't ravenous, eat whole grains like whole grain bread without HFCS, whole wheat pasta, etc. Shop the perimeter of the store for the fresh stuff and stay away from the processes stuff. I also avoid a lot of low-fat stuff because it's loaded with extra sodium to make up for the loss of fat. Also, continue to drink plenty of water!

I have to admit, I have been really lazy ( about my own diet and exercise) after each of my pregnancies for the first year or so, then I just try to focus on walking with the kids in the stroller, and try to manage my portion sizes and make sure my plates are 1/2 veggies and 1/4 meat, 1/4 carb - with some healthy fats (fish, olive oil, avocado, raw nuts) thrown in.

I got up to about 195 pounds with each of my full term pregnancies, I am only 5'2" tall. In my personal experience, I would automatically lose about 20-30 pounds right after delivery, and then my body would slowly lose down to about 150, and then hang onto the rest as long as I was breastfeeding, like an "insurance policy" in case there was a "famine" I would still be able to feed the baby. I could only really lose the last of the weight after I ws done nursing - we stopped at 9 months with each of my 2 babies.

After the first, I started to do the Michael Thurmond's 6 Week Body Makeover eating plan http://www.mybodymakeover.com/?entryurl=http://www.bodyma... at 9 months, and lost 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks( got just under 140!), but then got derailed by (oops) becoming pregnant again right away. I had a miscarriage about halfway through, but unfortunately kept the 12 pounds I had gained. I got pregnant again 8 months later, and this time after I stopped nursing, I forgot to stop eating so much, and I have actually gained weight back after stopping nursing. I was down to 150 while nursing, but now I am back at 180!! YIKES!

I am so tired of being tired and overweight, trying to keep up with a 3 year old and 1 year old....I am starting the T-Tapp workout http://t-tapp.com/ next week when my DVD's get here, and I am trying to watch my portions and ratios of which food s I am eating....it is really hard with these two running around! With the Michael Thurmond plan - which workes wonderfully when you DO IT, I have to eat 5-6 mini meals a day, and the amount of cooking and prep is just too overwhelming for me right now, but if you cna find a way to do the prep ahead of time, it really works, even just the eating plan, without the 15 minute a day resistence workout and hour of walking. it is all customized to you when you get the program, you take a 180 question multiple choice test to determine your metabolism/body type, and then the foods and resistance exercises are specific to your metabolism and problem areas.

I would reccommend a combination of both T-Tapp and Michael Thurmond's 6 Week Body Makeover, that is what I plan to do once my T-Tapp DVDs get here.

Good Luck!

Jessie

Weight Watchers really works and also the good old counting calories. I like that best because you can eat whatever you want....you just have to stay in your calorie limit for the day. I am very skinny only 109 lbs and I stay that way by counting calories. I try to stay right around 1500 for the day. that's what works for me.

I"m having trouble losing after my third. Ugh! The weight dropped off for two weeks, and then stopped. Now he's four months old and I'm sick of feeling fat!

I know I"ve been eating a lot of junk because of the holidays and car trips that have been nearly constant for the past 4 months. So I've got to stop that.

But it's hard to stop that because I'm tired all the time. I knew this was true before, but I saw a show about a study they did about your food choices when you're tired. Sleep-deprived people choose high-calorie, high fat foods because 1) their willpower is low 2) they're relying on calories to boost their energy instead of sleep.

I've been TERRIBLE about going to bed at a decent hour because once the kids are asleep, the house is so quiet and peaceful, and I can do whatever I want. But I'm going to make sleep a priority and that should help quite a bit.

I have fibromyalgia, which makes me tired and sore all the time. Exercise is near torture because even a little bit of it makes me very very sore the next few days. So I'm starting out very very slow, but so far I've remembered to do some sit ups and leg lifts every day. I kid you not, I started with 5 reps the first day, 8 the next. But since I was doing NOTHING to begin with, I figure anything will help, right? And I really believe that starting slow is the way to go, because it's easier to have small things become a part of your lifestyle. Trying to force yourself to suddenly jog a mile a day is likely to fail, but 5 situps a day I can do!

Good luck to both of us!

Eat your food groups and colors. Opt for natural over processed. Limit candy/desserts to 1-2x/week or less. If you are used to ice cream after dinner every night, it'll take a few days to get out of the habit, but after a few days/week you won't crave it as much. Focus on what you CAN eat rather than what you can't---as in if you want a snack, decide if you really need those crackers or if an apple would satisfy you. Don't buy sweets/snacks so you don't have to see them in the house.

Once your baby starts crawling/walking you'll be chasing him more and that will help ;-P I did A LOT of stroller walks. And I went to the gym 1-2x/week (of course that means scheduling around naps/feedings and finding a sitter or use the gym's bbsitting service).

Set goals. It doesn't have to be lbs lost, it can be # of waters/veggies per day or # of deserts not eaten, or # of minutes exercising in a day or week. Tell everyone your goals, so they can help you be accountable to meeting them (you won't want to tell your BFF that you flaked out on walking b/c you just didn't feel like it).

Find a partner in your goals and work on them together.

You might also create a personal reward system for when you are doing good/meeting your goals. Maybe you get to buy a new book or get a pedicure (something you have to reserve for meeting goals only). I personally pay myself $1/hour for exercising and I save up for a massage or pedi as my reward--it has to be something you won't otherwise do. Maybe hubby can do something for you... or grandparents bbsit and give you a night away as a reward...

good luck to you. and best of health.

I gained a lot of weight with both of my pregnancies! A week after our son was born I had lost 34 pounds but was still about 30 pounds overweight. After both if my pregnancies I have done Weight Watchers and it has helped me get rid of that extra weight. What I like the most about WW is that it isn't a diet. It is a lifestyle change. You learn how to make healthier choices, how to skinny down your favorite recipes, how to easily add more activity into your day. I can eat anything that I want to as long as I do it in moderation. I don't ever feel deprived. I was overweight before our first baby was born but after she was born I lost over 50 pounds in less than a year without changing too much. I was worried I would gain it all back when I stopped nursing but by then I had learned what I needed to do to maintain my weight. I can't say enough about how much I have learned from doing WW and I feel much more healthy.

Weight Watchers specifically has a program for breastfeeding moms. You'll want to be careful that you eat enough to maintain the milk or you will notice a decrease (and so will your son!). Good luck and keep breastfeeding to lose more weight. As soon as you stop, you may find that you gain about 3-5 lbs.

Hi K.
I did the same thing with Twins. Couldn't lose that last 15 lbs- but even more- harder to get my shape to bikini at 41.
I used products that I can't talk about on here.
As a result though-- I not only lost the lbs-- but I am bikini worthy after my stomach was out to my knees reclined!!
I also got surprising relief for my restless leg syndrome symptoms and no more migraines-- bonus!!
I'm heading out for a family trip-- but email me at ____@____.com
When I return-- I'll be happy to run your profile-- free-- and give you hints on how to lose.
I am a wellness coach-- in fact today starts one of our 8 week online weight loss challenges for winnings up to $599 -- that's at challengevictor.com if its' something you want to look at. A fun way to lose and maybe win too.
Anyway-- I'll look for your email and don't give up-- it's way do-able- and you want to especially if you're going to have more babies. Don't forget to take an omega 3 supplement too-- your baby (if you weren't supplementing) will have depleted your stores for brain development and more and it takes up to 3 years to replenish them- can also help with mom brain and post partum type stuff too and energy.

About me: 49 yo perfusionist, wellness coach, wife, mom with 8 yo twin girls.

Weight Watchers is great, and the online tool is SO awesome. I'm lucky enough to get to use my mom's online tool, and she's given me some of her leftover "low tech" items, such as the slider to determine points, and a book with lots of info. But you can find the point value of all foods online, and enter calories/fat/fiber to calculate points of other items. It's expensive, but totally worth it, and month to month. So, once you lose the weight, you can be done with the monthly costs and you'll know enough to be able to maintain using their system. You don't have to go to meetings this way, which some people are into and some are not. My friend actually joined online with her mom and her sister, so they split the cost three ways. Only one could actually use the "tracker," but they were all able to calculate points, enter recipes, and find recipes (and there are hundreds of great ones) online. I'd highly suggest it. It's very effective, and really more of a lifestyle change than a diet. Good luck!

p.s. I've lost all but 5 pounds of the baby weight with WW and I'm only 7 months postpartum! I gained almost 60 lbs with him.

I have had some success with Weight Watchers. They have a "nursing mothers" modification for their program.

That being said, my baby is almost 13 and I'm still working on it LOL.

Also, Weight Watchers works better for me if I actually go to the meetings (the online program by itself wasn't enough for me though I do like it for easily tracking points).

I second (or third) the Weight Watchers suggestion. I have lost 75+ pounds on it since my 4th was born. I love it! It is totally "livable" as you aren't really deprived of anything. You are just learning how to live within the guidelines of what your body needs. They have both the option to attend meetings or to do the program online - whatever works for you. They also have a special modification for nursing mothers, so you don't have to wait until your baby is weaned. (That was always my excuse.) Whatever you choose to do - good luck!

Cut out the sugar and breads. You might want to read The South Beach Diet, as it teaches how to eat a more healthy way, cutting out these things. It also has some good recipes. If you cut out all sugars/carbs for two weeks, your body will sort of re-program, and you can add back the good carbs in slowly. It works very well. Getting off of sugar is hard though. It gave me a major detoxifying headache! But, it was needed.

I didn't have a 'go to' plan at the time (after my pregnancies), but I have since learned that the bottom line is to eat clean (colorful, rather than 'white' food such as white flour, white sugar, white pasta, which are simple carbs - high glycemic) and burn more calories than you consume! If you use more fuel than you are ingesting, then your body will have to use the fat stores. But clean food calories are healthier for you than junk food calories.

Good luck and congratulations on your new son :)
