Low Fluid

At my ultrasound appointment yesterday, the ultrasound tec. said that my amniotic fluid is on the low side. I know that I'm not leaking it out. I was just wondering if anybody here might be able to tell me why it might be low and explain what that means as far as the babies health and labor and delivery? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I had another ultra sound today, and my fluid level was 5.3 I have to have another one done on Tues. that's when they will decide if they will induce or not. I hope everything goes okay, I'm not due until Jan. 3rd. but my doctor told me today, that if it goes lower, they'll induce. Thank you all so much for answering my question. It really was a big help!!!

Hi D. C,

I believe that this is a very important question that you are asking and that you really need to have some peace of mind regarding low amniotic fluid. I know that I speak only for myself but a good place to start of course, would be your doctor and sometimes when I want to know something medically and I want an answer immediately, you can research your problem or concern on the internet on "WebMed"..www.webmed.com. maybe you will find an answer there.

Hope this help and I know that your baby will be healthy and beautiful.

Sincerely,

There can be different reasons for having low amniotic fluid levels. If your baby is still moving around well and looked good on the ultrasound and you are healthy, it could be that you just need to drink more fluids.

The amniotic fluid level can change throughout the day. It can also be tricky to measure...the size of the pockets they measure can change based on how your baby is lying.

Of course, discuss all concerns with your care provider!

Your amniotic fluid can dip if you're even slightly dehydrated - try drinking some extra water or herbal tea and see if it makes a difference!

And of course, talk to your midwife or doctor!

Chances are that you are just not drinking enough water. Try upping your water intake between now and your next visit.

What is the reason you're getting ultrasounds at this point? Is there some specific concern?

Good luck,
L.

My fluid was low so I was induced. I know that low fluid is not good for the baby but I don't know exactly what it does, they gave me artificial fluid until my son was born.

I experienced this with my first and current pregnancy. With my first daughter the fluids were very low and I had to be induced the same day. My water hadn't broken so there was no clear explaination as to why it was low. I was told that the placenta may not be functioning properly or that the baby's kidneys were not working properly. I was terrified! She was born on Dec 20, 2005 and was very healthy and remains that way.

Currently I'm 38 weeks pregnant and I had an ultrasound Monday and another last night at the ER. The first one showed that my fluids were on the low side..something like 7.4. I went to the ER last night because I was worried that something wasn't right and I was told my fluids were 10.5 which is good. I was told that anything below 5 was low. So in my opinion, the fluid levels may not be accurate because how could mine change within a day? So I advise you to get another one to make sure. Good Luck...I hope I helped!

Hi D., I actually had that happen with my second child. Your obgyn should be monitering your fluid now more often. Thankfully, when they noticed mine being low, I was already 36 weeks, they then wanted to check me again 4 days later to see if it was lower and if it was, they were going to have to induce labor. Amniotic fluid getting to low can harm the baby, I can't remember exactly, but I think they said if it gets to 5 or lower that they would have to induce. I'm not real sure how it "goes away", but I've heard that if you drink LOTS of water, sometimes you can replenish some of the lost fluid. So I think I would start there. Now, when I went to the hospital that 4 days later to have my fluid checked again, it was only down a tiny bit, not really enough to induce because it was scary low, but the doctor was unsure as wanting to bring the baby out a month early if the need not be there. Long story short, he had me walk around the maternity floor for an hour to see where my contractions were, I was having them on my own, and they had gotten to close together and he decided to keep me. I had my daughter and besides some minor problems when she was born, she is now 21 months old and as healthy as can be. She was having some breathing problems when she was born, gasping for air, they believed she inhaled some of the amniotic fluid and needed to get it out. She was in special care the whole 2 days I was in the hospital, but she came home with us and was fine. I honestly believe that a lot of the problems from when she was born was the person who was "trying" to deliver the baby. My doctor was there, but an intern was trying to deliver and my doctor got so frustrated with her because she wasn't doing what should have, he told her to move and he delivered the baby just fine within minutes. Because of the first lady not knowing what she was doing, my baby had a very slight fracture on her left shoulder, however nothing that has inpacted her life in a bad way. Like I said, SHe is a very healthy little girl and is in the 90th% for her height and weight.
Congratulations and good luck. Keep me updated on what the doctor says and when they check it again. And remember, Drink LOTS of water in the meantime.
