I know it's not really a laughing matter, but I saw an article yesterday that called it an "AFLOCKALYPSE" - the word just kinda struck me as funny :)
What do you make of this? Watching the news they are reporting millions of fish and birds just dropping dead all over the world... Kinda crazy! The news says that people are crying apocalypse (2012), my MIL is convinced that terrorists have poisoned the water, the scientists on the news are saying that the birds are showing trauma, and thinking that the fish might be from ocean temperatures changing... I don't know what to think. Hopefully there will be more information out soon, but I was just wondering what other people think of this.
ETA... I don't really have much of an opinion on what is going on... after all, there is no way to KNOW until you know. lol. I was just wondering about other people's opinions (especially when you hear such sensational 'reasons' everywhere. :P)

there are species that die in large unexplained numbers throughout the history of time, some commit suicide. Its a form of natural population control. Im not saying that this is what this is but its the first thing i thought of.
It's the apocolypse! We should all freak out and kiss our loved ones goodbye!!
I'M KIDDING.
I'm pretty sure this is nature's way of natural elimination and it's perfectly normal. If you research it, similar things have happened dozens of times before OUR lifetime for no reason other than natural causes... the only reason we worry about it now is because it hasn't happened to US before, and it is human nature to shy away from change.
While man made factors probably add into the situation in one minor way or another, it's not like entire species are suddenly becoming extinct and humans are growing (or losing) extra appendages. I'm chalking it up to some natural, NOT life altering change that will be forgotten until the next time something similar happens.
People have to understand that the Earth is constantly changing. Our universe is constantly changing. It takes billions of years, but it's happening. Glaciers cut out mountains, melt, leave lakes, then dry up. Do you think the dinosaurs ever thought that WE would replace them (if they were capable of such thought)? Probably not. Like it or not, and we'll never live to see it, I'm sure there will EVENTUALLY, billions of years from now, come a time when we too, are extinct.
Pretty deep question, wish my honey was home, this could be a nice, cozy conversation!!
Mass animal deaths have happened throughout the past as well. It is nothing new. I remember when I was in college 17 years ago there was a mass bird death....these beautiful dead birds were lying everywhere. It was disturbing. I never found out what caused it. When the Navy has tested ultrasonic sonars in the ocean there are often mass whale/fish deaths. I can't think of other examples right now. It's sad, isn't it?
Some of the fish and birds were in the middle of landlocked lakes, in the Midwest where there are tons of military missile silos.
Humans are blights to the Earth... why is it taking so long for the worst culprits (America) to notice and try to stop the forwarding of pollution, climate change and overkilling of animals/fish/plant life?
Scientists, Military and Government are playing with explosively fatal disease strains, playing with making them more virulent... why? Why use biological weapons of such a magnitude when it can so quickly and easily backfire?
We still do not know what for sure cause all the other mass extinctions our earth has experienced. Maybe it is just the circle of life.
The birds more than likely died from being sucked up in a tornado. It's not unheard of for it to "rain" fish or frogs after a tornado. Birds roost in tree, tornadoes come (some of which killed 6 people on the same night), birds go up and are hit with flying debris causing blunt trauma, dead birds fall to the ground.
A good part of the fish kills have been in or around the Mississippi River and along the eastern seaboard. My logic tells me it's probably related to the lasting effects gulf oil spill. We don't hear about it anymore, but the effects will be felt all through the food chain for a long time. Also, colder than usual winters are killing fish. Colder winters and warmer summers are all sign of climate change. I am not a tree-hugger or anything, but the climate is changing whether people want to admit it or not.
Not to make fun of this serious issue but one of my friends had posted this story on his fb page and this girl responded saying that she suspects that it was some lunatics standing around in a field throwing stones at these birds is what's causing the birds to fall off and she was as serious as she could be....that cracked me up!
It's bizarre to say the least...
Mamma L the movie you are thinking of is called "The Butterfly Effect" and it is a real effect. Time tends to soften peoples memories of what has happened recently. The oil spill in the Gulf is still a major catastrophe, but people are pushing it aside as over. I moved from my house in FL because of it and I do not regret it at all. No one knows how the disbursments will effect the water, fish, land or people surrounding the gulf. Never mind the effects of all that oil in the water. Once I saw things floating in the water I had never seen before, we moved asap. It is very scarey, especially when people forget. Yes, I do believe this is a major cause of disruption and will be to our planet for many years to come. Remember all that oil is not good for the Gulf Stream, which travels the world. This effects everything.. everywhere. Ugh, just ugh. The scientists think the fish might be dying fro ocean temperature changes...yup I can see that. Keep watching and being aware of your surroundings and I am sure you will be hearing more strange instances that we can relate back. Not to sure about bringing on the apocalypse but messing up the oceans around the world and lots of Butterfly Effects coming up. Yeah that I see. Just my opinion.
I'm not all consipracy theory but I wondered about different government agencys doing some kind of testings in different areas that went wrong or somthing like that. I think if it were terrorist related they would hopefully warning people. Who knows but I def don't buy that they were scared by fireworks or whatever new nonsence their spouting off with!
I saw the story about doves, and then some. I think I am just going to sit tight and wait for the explanation. A week they said to identify what the blue streak on dives was. As for the apocalypse, if it is going to happen, there is nothing I can do about it.
I think it's due to the Gulf oil spill, first of all, in addition to the use of chemicals in general. Birds are more sensitive to changes in the environment than most people are--that's why they took canaries down into the coal mines--so I think this is a warning. I'm one of those people who is more sensitive than most to chemicals. Our family has gone down to Florida during winter break every year. We did go down this year, too, but we avoided the Gulf coast. The mainstream media isn't reporting the toxic effects of the oil spill but I have learned of some on alternative sites. This was a very serious event that will continue to affect our environment for years to come.
From what i read this isnt that uncommon many animals of the same species will die off at the same time for no reason. its evolutions way of keeping the animals from over taking the world. with that being said i think the reason no ones noticed it until now is b/c their havent been as many people as their have been in recent years. AND everyones looking for something crazy (terrorist, global change, animals dying) im not sure about anything either but thats how i feel about it :)
I did read the story that this is always going on, we just never hear about it. I'm not sure they are selling me on this. Something is going on and they aren't telling us...
