Mattress and Pee

I just bought my 4 year old son a brand new twin mattress for his bed. I trusted my husband to pick out the waterproof mattress pad. He bought it at Target, I barely read the pakage and just put it on the mattress. It was soft with a plasticy like lining so I assumed it was waterproof. My son wet the bed last night and it soaked right through onto the mattress. Must have just been a liner designed to prevent allergens.

I cleaned it by soaking it with hot water and using a Bissel Steam cleaner. There's no stain but it still has a faint smell. I'm so mad about this. Is there anything I can do to better clean it...really don't want to have to replace a brand new mattress.

What can I do next?

We used to use the same pet product. One day we were out so I used vinegar and water as a spray. It also worked and then I used a little baking soda On mattress under mattress pad.

Pour Nature's Miracle on it. Soak it through, and let it dry.

I have removed odors from mattresses by going to the pet store and getting a bottle of Nature's Miracle. It's a stain and odor remover for pet messes, but the product doesn't mind if it's a people mess.

I wouldn't spray it on as the directions indicate - I'd pour it on. It has to soak through *every bit* of the affected area - even the inside-the-mattress part you can't see - for it to work. It could take several hours to dry completely; if both the original odor and the product odor (it does have a fragrance) disappear, then the mattress is dry and you hit every spot. Your son might get the privilege of bunking in a sleeping bag on the floor that night!

Yes, I've made that mistake, too - thinking something was waterproof when it wasn't. You have lots of company.

Per my kids, I got my waterproof bed pads, from Amazon.
I have NEVER EVER, had a problem with it.
I put it DIRECTLY under my kids, not under the sheets, under my kids. And I never had wet mattresses nor did the fitted sheets get wet.
I have 4 of these bed pads, and I just rotate them out as need be.

Try steam cleaning it more than once.
The smell should go away.
Or, make a paste of baking soda, pat it on, let dry, then vacuum up.

Nature's Miracle is a GOOD product.
Every Mom should have that.

Take it outside on a sunny day when the sun is the hottest. The sun is amazing at removing germs and odors.

Vinegar works amazing on the "pee smell". We use it on the mattress, and on the laundry when accidents happen. On the bonus side it also is a fabric softener, CHEAP, and I promise it doesnt make your stuff smell like vinegar, that smell will go away rapidly. If you can spray it down with the vinegar VERY well and then put it in the sun to dry that is the thing that works the best. I still like to sprinkle the mattress with baby powder too, but that is just because *I* like the scent of it.
You can use Natures Miracle, I hear it works very well, but we have had luck with just the vinegar :)
Good luck!!

I agree. Try the Nature's Miracle.

If that doesn't work put your mattress in one of those plastic zippered covers. Then put a thick, but washable, mattress pad on top of that.
