Medicine Breath

My daughter is 3.5 and recently had what seemed to be a 24-hr GI bug. She is fine now, but seems to have medicine smelling breath. Any idea what this might be from, or what, if anything should be done? It almost has a fingernail polish remover scent to it.

What can I do next?

Thanks for the advice and input everyone. She is doing well today and her BS is good as well.

Please get your daughter to her doctor to check on this ASAP. Her acetone smelling breath is one of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children. Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease and can be triggered by a virus. It is better to be safe than to be sorry. Let your doctor check on her glucose levels and find out what is going on.

I'd have her blood sugar checked. Acetone breath and fruity/sweet breath are often symptoms that something isn't working right with blood sugars.

Some bad breath comes from the stomach.
I knew a guy with an ulcer once whose breath could knock you over.
Tonsil stones can also stink something awful.
If it doesn't clear up in a few more days it might be worth calling the pediatrician about it.

It is likely from the bug, and should resolve itself in a few days. Give her some probiotics to get the healthy bugs back in there again.
