My daughter is 13 months and recently started fussing and fighting when I go to change a dirty diaper. She lays still and quiet when its just pee but if it is messy she screams and squirms...Has anyone been thru this before and what can I do to get her to lay still (I know she can b/c she does for pee diapers).

Thanks

What can I do next?

My son often fusses if he has a poopy diaper. He only fusses when it is causing irration to him. Wiping his butt when he is irritated is very painful for him when he has irritation. This happens for him when he eats something new or a lot of something. Try putting a soothing cream on after cleaning her up.

If she is standing well try changing her standing up. She might like the change in position. However, it might make it easier for her to fight :)

It could be that her tush is irritated. Of course having a poopy diaper irritates it and then sometimes wipes can irritate it even more. Try switching wipes or if you're up to the cleaning maybe use a wash cloth. Good luck!

I give my daughter a toy to play with or I sing to her while I change her diaper. We do have some struggles still, but she is getting much better.

The other diva mammas have good ideas. The toy distraction works well with my youngest. Maybe switching wipes could do the trick. Also, I found that she dislikes dirty diaper/pull up changes because they take longer and cramp her style (always on to go...)

I wonder if your little one has very acidic stool or a light skin rash which is irritated by her stool. Maybe you could put a soothing cream on after each "messy" and-over time-maybe your little one will stop negatively anticipating her stool cleaning. With food allergies, has she had a recent new food (wheat, corn, peanuts, etc.) that could be upsetting her stomach and making her stool more acidic? Also, you can use a natural soap on the "hinny" to not over-wash the skin. If you over-wash(harsher soaps or washing too much), the oil that protects the skin from irritants (stool) is washed away. I think, also, that my kids got more fussy at diaper changes if I didn't check as often to see if they were "messy". I hope this helps. -L.

My daughter who is almost 15 months is not a fan of diaper changes regardless if they are messy or just pee. I think that most babies do not like having their diaper changed because that means that they have to sit still:) I just make sure I have some small toys in the drawer of the changing table and I just pull one out when changing my daughter's diaper. The small toy keeps her occupied for the few moments that I need to clean her up.

I play where is your nose, eyes, ears, elbow, etc. Keeps her hands busy and works most of the time.

My son has never liked to get his diaper changed either. Toys don't work with him. I generally have to pretend to tickle him or make funny faces at him to get him to focus on me instead of the fact that I am changing his diaper. But the fact that she doesn't fuss when you change a pee diaper means that it probably has nothing to do with distraction. Changing the wipes could work if you had recently made a change at the time that the fussing started. But does she have an irritated bottom? Both of my children get diaper rash a bunch (my daycare doesn't change them as often as I'd like). The diaper rash would always make my daughter run from us when we'd try to change her messy diaper. We would let her air dry for a bit (or pat her dry with a cloth), then put on some diaper cream. The one we are most fond of is the Balmex cream. Seems to do the trick. With my daughter's worst cases of diaper rash (during ear aches while she is on medication) she seems to clear up within days. If none of these things work, I may contact your daughter's doctor just to be 100% sure it couldn't be something else.

Good luck!

Wipes might be hurting(iritating) her buttoms after the poopy one(try using wash cloth). Also it takes longer time to change after messy kind so she might just get unpacient(you know how one year olds are always on the go) What worked for our oldest when I would change him I would blow bubbles out of the bubble gum.
Nothng works for our younger one though and many times we end up in the tub:)
