Deans half gallon carton container doesn't use growth hormones...usually you can get Deans at Tom Thumb....just found that out a week ago. The only drawback is you have to buy the half gallon container, but it is still much less expensive.
Hi moms,
I am feeling a bit clueless about milk!
We have been buying Horizons milk for the last year or so but it is so expensive! I spent the last hour playing online trying to learn what makes it so much better than Schepps or Braums or any of the brands that advertise that they don't use the artificial growth hormones but I still haven't figured it out. If anyone knows why the Horizons is worth the price tag, please let me know! Or if you know why one brand is better than another-really any info will help. We go through so much milk every week & the last thing I want to do is put harmful hormones into my little boy!
Thanks so much!

Kristin,
For me it is a committment to buying organic products &
supporting organic farms. Organic Valley is actually a "cleaner" more pure organic farming/ dairy to buy from. Horizon uses more "corporate" farms, & I believe they sell to both organic & non-organic producers, so they may have part farm that is organic, the other part non...so who knows where they meet in the middle. They may also sell to large companies, like Target for their store brand organic milk... which leads to some-less-than-pure, yet-still-skirting-the line organic practices. OV uses primarily small farms in the state in which the milk is sold. Their farming practices are better environmentally, as well as the way they pasture their cows, not just grain feed them, as well as there being no synthetic hormones or antibiotics used in their feed.
So, yes, the organic milks are pricey- much better if you can buy it by the gallon (usually $5.49), as opposed to the $3.50 half gallons, but well worth the cost for the care & lack-of -garbage in my family's food sources.

Hi Kristin,
I also buy Horizon Organic Milk and it is better tasting, better for your kids and it last alot longer. If you guys go through that much milk, then go for the cheaper stuff then. There is NOT a huge difference except that it last tons longer that the other. We don't drink milk all that much, so the other tends to gets bad faster before we even drink it and w/Horizon's Milk, it lasts much longer for us.
Good Luck,
Gladys
Target now has an organic brand of milk and many other organic things. I like the Archer Farms milk. Hope that helps.

Hi Kristin.
I love, love, love Horizons milk but you're right, it's very expensive...so I never do buy it to keep in the home. We generally use Schepps or the store brand. My daughter likes them all the same it seems so it's worth it for me to save the extra couple dollars per week. If only we could get our hands on some good Horizons milk coupons! I guess Horizons just costs more simply because it's organic.
Hi Kristin,
When you get some free time, check out this web site:

This might help you understand why organic milk and other organic products are worth the extra money.
Best regards, N.
Kristin,
The organic milk is a lot better for your baby in the long run.
With that said, it is going to be more expensive.
But, like another mom said, try buying by the gallon instead of the half gallon.
Also, at our Kroger, they mark down the Horizon gallons two days before their expiration date.
So if you go to the grocery store a couple times a week, check the Horizon gallons, and sometimes you'll find some that are marked "Manager's Special".
We go through more than a gallon every two days, so buying it that close to the date is not a problem for us.
Just a thought!
Good luck!
J.
We've always bought organic; however, I've recently started using Braums. They have their own private herd and it appears they are raised in a more healthy environment. They also don't use the hormones and antibiotics which are what really concern me in milk. I've actually read that Horizon uses dehydrated milk in their products and that, among the organic companies, they treat their cows the worst. So when I do buy organic, it's usually not Horizon now. Last week, I just picked up 2 1/2 gallons at Braum's for the same price or less than what I'd pay for Horizon. If I'm out and have to go to the grocery store, I will buy an organic brand. But if I can take the time out, I will go buy Braum's now.
I highly recommend Braums-tastes great and is great for you.
My doctor has never said to use a certain brand. It is all personal preferance. We go through so much milk as well, but were always told to keep our little boy on whole milk. I am now buy Braums for the fact that their's is cheaper, does not tast bad, they use keep their cows in a well maintained, controlled and stable environment and from what they say they don't use the hormones that others use.
