Mini Crib Vs. Standard Crib

I'm expecting a baby girl (my 2nd child) after Christmas and my parents have graciously offered to buy the nursery furniture. The room she will be in is sorta small and the way the furniture will fit will be awkward (I live in a 200+ year old house). I like the convertible cribs but my problem is that when it's time to make it a real bed, a full size bed really won't fit good in that room. I noticed on Baby's r Us website that they have mini cribs that convert to a twin size bed (a perfect size), but one reviewer says that they only fit a baby up to 1 year old. So that basically means, no toddler bed. About what age do kids stay in a toddler bed for anyway? Does anyone know anything about these mini cribs? They don't have them in stores so I can't go and see for myself. I guess you need special bedding for them too which I have no idea about finding. Is a mini crib a waste?

What can I do next?

I also thought about buying one of these, and I saw one in the store actually at babies r us and they are small. I ended up getting a regular crib because it is bigger and the baby can use it for alot longer which is what they need. The mini crib yes, can only be used until a year or so I have found out. I didnt have alot of room either in my house, so we bought the regular crib but nixed the changing table. I found I really didnt use it so much and just used other surfaces like the bed or his crib even to change him in.
I made a diaper stacker and hung it on the wall and have hanging storage things for extra clothes, sheets, etc in the closet.
For me it seemed like the best decision.

I would feel safer with a standard crib. Just buy an inexpensive one and be sure to check the safety ratings and any recalls. $100-150. Don't pull them out until at least age 2. Use a crib tent if they want to crawl out.

Later, buy an inexpensive toddler bed which are usually the character ones for maybe $50. Those usually can last up to about age 5. You can use the crib mattress, pads, sheets and stuff to save money.

Then you can get a twin mattress and frame for about $150, and add a headboard if you like later.

I would think if you are okay with putting her in a twin at 1 year, that would be a good idea (but then again this is just an estimate. You may have an extremely tall or short baby and that would change everything!).

Second, not sure if you did a toddler bed with your 1st child but I did and regret it. We did it because of space (we have a convertible crib/changing table and toddler bed in one room cuz my kids share so having her in a twin is not really an option at this point) but I do not like that I cannot lay down with her! My suggestion - get a regular sized crib because she could stay in there until she's 3 (give or take depending on if she tries to climb out!).

I really want to get a twin for my daughter, but she will stay in her toddler bed until she's too big or until my son is ready to come out of his crib. At that point I'm going to get a twin bed with a built in trundle so it gives us more space but they each have their own twin bed!

Good luck and congrats!

I have seen regular cribs that convert into twin sized day beds. This may be an option you have not thought of but if I had to make a decision I would go with a regular sized crib baby will get much more use out of a regular sized crib. Do you ever plan on moving in the future or do you plan on staying in that house for a lifetime? Life has so many twists and turns. Who knows you could be a place that is configured much differently and your furniture will work just fine. Congratulations and success to you.

I had portacribs for both of my children because of very small spaces. They were fine. My first could climb out of it and a full sized crib(I tested it at a friends) at a year old so I put the mattress on the floor for safety reasons. My second was very small and slept in it until she was 2. I would consider it if only for a year because of the space saving aspect.

They do make portacrib size sheets, usually you do need to order online. Also sheets for pack n plays fit. Basically, it is the same size as a pack n play, but with a better mattress and stronger.
