My 3 year old fell about 1 1/2 weeks ago and got a huge scratch on her cheek. I put neosporin on it right away and kept putting neosporin on it for a few days until it healed. The problem is that her cheek is still really red and it looks as though it may scar. The scratch wasn't deep at all but it looks horrible and really stands out. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what else I can do to minimize the scarring or avoid it all together. Please help.
Hi-My little guy had a big scratch like that when he was 1 1/2. Right on his little cheek! It was red, red red...not very deep at all. I used Eucerine lotion on it every day. After a couple of months, it totally disappeared. Good luck.

My youngest son fell and split his forehead open last summer. At the ER, the pediatrician had a plastic surgeon come and talk to me. He told me that once the wound healed that the best I could do for him would be to put aloe vera on the area a couple times a day. (There has actually been research done to refute Vitamin E. So he told me) He said you could use Mederma, but an aloe vera plant is much cheaper. Also, exposure to the sun is a big no no.
I was told today by a friend Vitamin E caplets. Break it open and put the vitamin E on the wound and it should keep it from scaring.
vitamin e does wonders. My daughter had 18 stitches from our dogs paw on her face and she is fine today. You can only see a hint of a scar where the deepest cut was.
Watkins Petro Carbo Salve is wonderful. Yep I sell it and my extremely negative about me doing this husband even loves this stuff. His daughter had a cut that required stitches. When he picked her up for his weekend it still looked pretty nasty. He put some on during the weekend and by the time he took her home you could barely see it. Now if she has a cut or scrape we hand her the ointment and she puts it on with no complaints at all. I recently had a new customer call me to order 4. She confirmed that it also works to bring out slivers. She puts it on and the next day the sliver comes right out. It has many uses including insect bites, burns, diaper rash and more.

buy some vitamin e oil in the vitamin section, not the lotion section and you wont have to open capsules.
My daughter has a scar, and the doctor just recommended Mederma. It will take a long time to see if it works, and we are only one week into it, but you might want to try it. Also, it is so important that you keep the scar out of the sun and put sunscreen on it,even in the winter time. If there is a scar and the sun gets to it, that more than anything will make it more noticable. You could try a dermatologist, they might have better advice.

I would take her to the doctor to get it looked at, just to make sure it's not infected. There are products out there that reduce scarring (like Mederma, or Prefer-on) but I don't know if they are okay to use on kids.
My sister was putting Vitamin E oil on a scar, and it kept getting redder and redder- come to find out, she is allergic to Vitamin E! So it pays to be careful. Good luck!
I use vitamin E capsules. poke a hole in the capsual and squeeze out the oil. rub into the scar. it takes about a month of daily use. I got rid of my 2nd degree burn scar this way.
You may occasionally put witch hazel on it - it is supposedly very good for illiminating bruises and scars.
I have had great success with Vitamin E. It works great on adult skin as well as tender children. Break open the capsule and use the liquid that is inside.

I agree keep it moist and covered. Also, don't worry too much - kids skin heals very well. My son had stiches above his eye when he was 3, now he is 6 and you can only see it if you know where to look and I'm sure that by the time he's grown it'll be gone.
Don't let her pick at it, keep it lubricated (for lack of a better word) but not wet. You can try some bio-oil, or some other remedy that is sold as an anti-scarring agent. Some of these moms will be able to give you a specific oil if you want to go that way. It will naturally be red for a while, as it is tender new skin forming that isn't really ready to be exposed to the elements yet....but it's all part of the healing process and it's not likely that a scrape will leave a scar.

You don't need to spread on the whole cheek, only over the scar.
