My 16 month old got the MMR shot last tuesday. She has had a little rash and runny nose ever since. but i didnt worry because the dr told me that was a side effect. she has been reallly really fussy so ive been giving her tylenol like the dr said and just loving on her. today i notice she has swollen lymph nodes on the back of her neck and kind of up on the base of her head. im really worried about them. she has been way fussier than normal today. ive called the answering service but have yet to receive a call back. jsut wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their toddlers?

What can I do next?

The MMR is rough on their immune systems - my older son had a similar reaction to it, and I swear, I think he was 'off' from it for about two weeks. I actually requested that it be split up into three seperate shots for subsequent doses, which helped a lot, but I don't think that's available anymore. I also gave him lots of lavender-scented baby oil rubdowns, massaging him and that would help.

Just try to keep her comfortable. Her immune system is working overtime right now trying to make all those antibodies, and that's what is causing the swollen glands. Reactions to vaccines vary, and can be really scary (we had a few other odd reactions that were deemed "normal"), but the ped has likely seen it all and will tell you not to worry. Hard to do, but in this case, they're right.

Usually, a Pediatrician gives the parent an Info Fact Sheet, on the vaccination that is given. It has all the info on it/side effects etc. Did you get this?
Just call them back tomorrow.

Find a homeopath and get this handled asap.
Japan quit giving little ones vaccines until age 3, and the autism rate drop alot.
Never, if you are going to vaccinate, never more than one- ONE -1- at a time
never never never,
Get to a homeopath today, really hurry.
best, k

I'm sure she is o.k...here is a link and some info for you...if you are still worried I wouldn't wait for them to call you....I would just go to your doctor and there is always the ER...even though this site says swollen glands are a MILD reaction...just google MMR & swollen glands. Good luck!!!

What are the risks from MMR vaccine?

A vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. The risk of MMR vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small.

Getting MMR vaccine is much safer than getting any of these three diseases.

Most people who get MMR vaccine do not have any problems with it.

Mild Problems

Fever (up to 1 person out of 6)
Mild rash (about 1 person out of 20)
Swelling of glands in the cheeks or neck (rare)
If these problems occur, it is usually within 7-12 days after the shot. They occur less often after the second dose.

Hi, I am a certified Homeopath and I would be giving remedies to help with the side effects from the MMR and yes, read about the side effects of vaccinations online. If you are going to vaccinate wait until 3 years old, give only one at a time and be sure to give the child homeopathic remedies for the side effects. Good luck

I never had this happen to my kids after getting shots. But I do get swollen glands in those places if I am overtired, run down or fighting off a cold. Sometimes a heat pack makes them feel better. It seems like a symptom that can wait for office hours.

The shot triggers the lymphatic system into overdrive, building immunity and antibodies to the live attenuated viruses administered in the vaccine. This is normal and I wouldn't worry too much. What you are seeing is a healthy reaction by her lymphatic system. Sounds like you did the right thing by calling your pediatrician if you are concerned. Hope she feels better soon!

Most hospitals have a 24 hour nurse line that you should be able to call. Check with your local hospital.

Dont giver her tylenol. It has been shown to harm the immune response.

Look on the back of your insurance card and see if there is a "nurse-line" many insurance companies have these lines that you can call 24 hours a day and they are there for questions just like this one. Otherwise many hospitals also have question/answer lines that you can call when it is after Drs. hours.

Good luck with your sweet baby girl! I am preggo with #2 and I just found out that my MMR shot didn't take when I was a child so I have to get it as soon as I deliver. Not so much something I am looking forward to.

What your seeing is a devastating hit to the immune system. DO NOT GIVE TYLENOL! It strips the liver of Glutathione, the most important natural antioxidant and toxin dissolver that we have. Instead give Motrin/Advil if she even needs it. Get a probiotic into her to get the yeast down and lots of vitamin C. Give her much more then the recommended of vitamin C. It may give her the runs and then cut back to a good dosage from there. C will never hurt you, it just gives the runs in massive doses. ALso plenty of cilantro in smoothies or soups. Pulverize it up to it can get to the cellular level. You can possibly keep this from becoming an auto immune disorder. Good luck......and NO MORE SHOTS!!!! This is your warning sign that she is not a candidate for any further shots including flu.

I just wanted to say that I will be much more sympathetic when my third child gets his MMR shot. I had a c-section a month ago, and my blood tests revealed that I was no longer immune to rubella. They gave me the MMR shot before I left the hospital. Starting the next day, the muscles in my arm hurt BAD for three days. With my other two kids, I just gave them tylenol for 24 hours or so, but I think I will keep my son on it for three days when he has his. I don't know what other symptoms it gave me since I was still on paid meds for the c-section.

It could very well be a reaction to the shot, a mump like reaction which would cause the glands to swell. It will probably be fine once the anitbodies and virus finish their course, but a call to you pediatrician for some encouragement to get you thru it would be the best thing to do.

Swollen lymph nodes following vaccination are considered a mild side effect of the vaccination - her immune system is responding to the vaccine by developing antibodies and cellular immunity. This will protect her against disease. They are not an indication of severe immune dysfunction or anything else. They are no reason not to continue your regular vaccination protocol. Tylenol is just fine unless your pediatrician has told you otherwise. There is no reason to massively overdose your child on vitamin C. Calling your pediatrician is always a good idea when you are concerned.

My girls never had any side effects from their shots. But when they got their shots when they were babies they had me nurse them while they were getting their shots. When the didn't nurse any longer they had me give them something to drink while they got their shot. I am not sure what this had to do with the shot but they never had any kind of reaction to their shots. Do not listen to the Mom's telling you not to get their shots. What they get from not getting them is far worse then any side effect from them. A friend of mine did not do the vacines for her three children. One of her children has passed away and a vacine could have prevented the illness. Now she is a firm believer of vacines and trying to get her children caught up on them. I would just watch her close and if it gets worse take her to the ER.
