More Twins

I just found out that I am pregnant with twins (not expected) and have already adopted my twin sons - now 4.5 years old. I had a very terrible experience with the OB/GYN - who told me she would definitely not want to be in my shoes. I am now without an obstetrician. I guess due to maternal age - over 34 and the fact that I am carrying twins sets me up for a "high risk" pregnancy - I also have an IUD in place. Has anyone utilized a specialist in the LV area for their multiple prenatal care. I have been here for a year and a half but never imagined I would need an OB/GYN who specialized in high risk pregnancy. Thanks to everyone - prayers are definitely welcomed!

So What Happened?

I actually found a perinatologist that specializes in multiples/high risk pregnancies and thankfully my insurance will cover my visits to them as if they were a regular ob/gyn. I have a wonderful doctor now - and the office staff are really fantastic. I am trying to remain positive about my surprise pregnancy and am house-hunting with my boyfriend these next two weeks.

I just had a son at 38 and was considered high risk. My primary Doctor was Dr. Kahle, and he was great - I really liked him. Dr. Swainston was the one that actually did the delivery and I really liked him, as well. If Dr. Kahle wasn't available, I'd go with him in a heartbeat. As for the high risk part, both a friend of mine (who had twins 6 weeks after my son was born) and I went to Dr. Adashek. He is considered to be the best in town. He definitely has an English sense of humor and can be a bit blunt, but he's really good. Good luck!!

You should look into getting a midwife. There should be no extrra risk because you are having twins or because you are 34. OB's have dumb rules because dumb people sue too much and the malpractice insurance is through the roof.
I reccommend Corrine Flatt. Her number is ###-###-#### (it spells midwife)

Hi A.:

First of all, congratulations! I just gave birth to my twin boys on Jan. 28th. My regular OBGYN is Dr. David Aberman. They have two offices in town. One is at Rainbow and Hacienda and the other one is on Sahara and Eastern. And my perinatologist (high risk Dr.) was Dr. Wilson Huang. He's with the Center for Maternal and Fetal Medicine. I would highly recommend both of these doctors to anyone I know. I also saw Dr. Huang when I was pregnant with my 2nd child, due to other issues. They have 3 offices in town. One on the SW side, one on Rancho, just north of Charleston and one in Henderson. Both offices take new patients, and like I said, they are both wonderful physicians. Hope this helps. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Wow, that was a pretty unprofessional thing for your OB to say! Especially if she wants to keep any patients. I had my twin boys at 35 and was also labeled "high risk" due to age, twins, a thyroid disorder, and multiple previous miscarriages. Trust me, you will be fine! Just take excellent care of yourself, and eat a LOT of protein (especially early in the pregnancy, since you won't have room for much in your stomach later, and it is vital for carrying to term). Your sons will be 5 when these babies are born, and they will be a huge help! The fact that you already have experience with twins puts you way ahead of the game. My daughter was 4 when her brothers were born, and was a huge help holding babies on the couch and running to get diapers, etc when my hands were full. I just moved to Las Vegas myself, so I'm sorry I can't help with a referral, but I'm sure you'll find someone great. The main thing that will change your care is the fact that toward the end of the pregnancy you will be going in to see the doc every week instead of once a month or every other week like the other moms. Once you get past 32 weeks, you'll breathe a sigh of relief and start counting down the weeks till you get to term, which is 37 weeks for twins. You've got a 50/50 chance of getting that far. That is where your diet and lifestyle will come in. I'd also recommend investing in some Bradley childbirth classes. They teach a lot of really fantastic relaxation techniques that helped me SO much during labor. Join a twins club if you haven't already. The moms will be a huge source of support for you, and will give you great advice that your OB won't think of unless she has twins herself. Good luck! D.

My OBGYN is Dr. Steven Harter with Women's Specialty Care at Summerlin Hospital. I did not have a high risk pregnancy, but I know that he has delivered twins before. He is an amazing doctor. I would never switch. He has a great bedside manner and a great medical staff also. I would recommend him to everyone. He was recommended to me by my sis-in-law who is an OB tech.

Hi A.,
I was pregnant at 38 YO and was considered a "risk". I used Dr. Clifford Kahle for my OB GYN. Most doctors should be qualified for a high risk pregnancy. My doc sent me to http://www.desertperinatalassociates.com/care.html for review and monthly ultra sounds. The doctor just guided me through my pregnancy, but the specialist watched for problems. I had Dr. Adashek, who was strongly recomended by my doc, as that was one of his instructors. The worse thing that happened to me was I was losing fluid in the end. Not leaking, just not retaining it. I was very active and they finally told me to slow down and quit walking or they would put me on bed rest.

Further, my mother carried twins at age 42/43 and twins and mom were all fine.

I hope that helps answer some of your questions. You will get a lot of attention with two sets of twins.

I recommend CMFM, Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine. All of the perinatologists there are fantastic. Generally, you have your regular ob-gyn and they refer you to this practice to have additional appointments because insurance won't always pay for a specialist to be your primary ob. However, you may be eligible to see only the specialist. You may have to check with your insurance. Good luck, and congrats!

I didn't have twins, but I just delivered my son and I was considered advanced maternal age at 37 years. My doctor is Darin Swainstin, MD ###-###-####). He also referred me to Dr. Gorski at Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine for additional monitoring. They have numerous offices around town. Congrats and good luck!

Try Dr. Richard Litt ###-###-####. He is a regular ob/gyn but is awesome :) and can probably send you in the right direction if he can't help you himself.

I have been in the Las Vegas area fo over 18 years. I spent several years working with Doctors and speaking to them about yellow page advertising. Why I tell you this is when I was looking for an OBGYN I asked over 20 respected doctors who the would choose. They all said Michelle Lewis. She is in the Green Valley area and had been my OBGYN for several years. I have nothing but good things to say about her. The only thing you need to do is pray she is still taking patients. As far as a high risk pregnancy I have a 10 years old and was considered high risk, when I was pregnant with him. If you are looking for a perinatal specialist call doctor Lewis and ask who she would recommend at this time. You;ll get good advise.

May God be with you

I see Dr Masaki at the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, I like him a lot. They work with regular OBs though, so I think you would need a referral to go there, not sure though. I vastly prefer going to him than my regular OB. I live in N LV but I go to their office in Seven Hills. Its a bit of a drive but I like the office.
