I recently had a pleasant surprise to find out I'm pregnant w/#3 :) Unfortunately I seem to have the same morning sickness as I had with 1 and 2-and it lasted for 5 months w/both previous pregnancies. :( I feel terrible b/c I feel like I have no energy to play with let alone feed, bathe, dress etc. my 4 and 2 year old. I'm constantly nauseous, exhausted and often light headed. I feel like any given moment I can either vomit or cry. Yey hormones ;) I'm having an especially hard with getting fluids in me. I'm looking for any secrets to dealing with this that I may have missed the first two times. I know it is so worth it all in the end but I'm having a rough time taking it day by day. Thanks everyone so much for you input and support! I have tried a lot of the suggestions previously w/o much success. The only thing that has seemed to help at all is forcing myself to eat regularly even though I don't feel like it. And lots of fruit and watermelon to get some fluids in me. After talking to my midwife and lots of research I did try the unisom and B6 combo. I've been taking it at night and it does seem to lessen the nausea when I first wake up. I tried it once during the day but I could barely keep my eyes open.

I had hyperemesis graviderium when I was prego for all 3 of my kids. I threw up for 9 months, lost a ton of weight, was always dehydrated and in and out of the hospital, sometimes for a few hrs sometimes for a few days. Ask the dr for a prescription, the only thing that helped me was zofran and reglan. I was also able to keep down homemade lemonade, most of the time. The dr also told me to take a b6 pill and a sleeping pill at night. Also try ginger, of any kind, and other lemon things, like lemon candy or even lemon cough drops. Good luck!
In my first pregnancy I lived on carbs to help -- bagels and cheerios. high protein snacks as well -- handfuls of peanuts, cheese, etc.
In my second I discovered the ginger and that helped some but I could barely choke it down.
In my third I discovered the seabands. These worked pretty well for me -- I put my watch over the top of the seaband to increase the pressure a little and then it worked better. I combined that with the use of prego-pops or prego-drops with decent results.
I agree liquid was trouble as well. I did find chocolate milk the easiest thing to drink and it has a good combination of carbs and protein as well.

I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum during my pregnancy and it was terrible. I was sick throughout my entire pregnancy. The only thing that helped was Zofran. It prevented the gag reflex and allowed me to keep some much-needed nutrients down. Ask your doctor for a prescription. I did try Reglan and the B6, but they didn't help at all. I kept saltines by the bed. I'd wake up during the night/early morning and try to eat a couple to help counter the acid in my empty stomach. I was usually able to choke down a couple and then curl up in the fetal position to sleep for a couple more hours. I was able to tolerate frozen apple juice and a tiny but of Coke soda. I'm a big fan of ginger, but surprisingly, it did nothing to ease the noshies.
Yes, think ahead to that precious little person you'll be bringing into this world. Count down the days! Good luck!
If you are having trouble functioning ask your midwife or doctor for a prescription for zofran. Perfectly safe in pregnancy and works very well.

Congrats on baby #3! I'm sorry that you are feeling sick. I was nauseaus for the entire 9 months with my only pregnancy. A midwife recommended seabands to me - and they saved my life! I had people telling me that sleeping and motion sickness pills were ok to take. I don't metabolize drugs well and I couldn't imagine that a tiny baby would either. Plus - there are people who have cancers now from things that their mother's took in the 60s when they were pregnant. The Seabands can be found in the pharmacy near the motion sickness pills, and when applied correctly they work like a charm! I couldn't get them back on fast enough when I would take them off to shower. They look like sweat bands and have a little button on the inside, place the button three finger widths back from the last crease between the heel of your palm and your wrist, in the center .....and that should do the trick! Also - little tiny mini snacks helped me, a few saltines, a 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich on a tortilla. Congrats R. on your pregnancy! I know how hard it is, especially having to take care of two little ones and being pregnant. Can you get any help? As for fluids, try anything that will hydrate you. Watermelon, popcicles, any kind of fruit. Hang in there, and good luck. Are you kids in school? I know times can be rough, but you have to take care of you right now. Maybe try to put them in some kind of program a few days a week to give yourself a break. R.

I would try some of the Vitamin Water that is out there. It has B vitamins in it (which I understand can help with nausea - my nausea lasted all 10 months, but I didn't know about B vitamins helping back then..). Anyway, it also has some electrolytes (like gatorade) and the biggest thing, for me anyway, is that it has flavor. I had a hard time with plain water when I was pregnant and nauseous. I also am picky about my flavored water... I don't want it sweet or for it to taste like some sort of fruit punch (blech) but I want it to be refreshing and not "dry" like some of the unsweetened ones can be. I found that Vitamin Water (the orange one or the lemonade one) both fit the bill.
I also drank a lot of chocolate milk, and pink grapefruit juice when I was pregnant and nauseous.
I hope you feel better soon. If all else fails, I used Zofran, and it made a huge difference in my quality of life for those months. (And my daughter had absolutely no ill effects).

I know with my 1st baby I realized that I only got sick if I didn't eat enough.
I made sure to have little snacks around me all the time. Healthy- ish ones at least :)
I actually went to bed every night with a glass of water or gatorade & a pack of saltines. If I woke up in the middle of the night cause I was thirsty I'd also eat a few crackers.
It helped me. I only noticed getting sick if I waited too long to eat something.
Try acupuncture! It is safe and can really help.

Congrats on number 3! I was sick my entire pregnancy and finally the Dr. told me about ginger in a pill form. I agree with Beth that crystal stuff - Blek.
Here I can go to the local grocery store - vitamin section and get the pills. Its kida like ground ginger (powder) in a pill. The only side effects were the burps. Lots and lots of burps. I hated ginger for a long lonnnnnng time afterwards. And I was never a huge fan to begin with.

I 'm not sure what to suggest in regards to a specific drink but I know I could not drink while eating. I had to wait about 20-30 mins after I ate something before I had a bottle of water. Good luck;)
Chiming in late to second all the suggestions offered already. I ended up on Zofran I was so miserable with my 2nd pregnancy (and lost 15 lbs in the first few months that I couldn't really afford to lose.
One suggestion that worked for me, that I didn't see here, was to keep up my fluid intake by drinking frozen drinks - slushies. I became a regular at 7-11 and would get 1-2 slushies/day sometimes. Usually the orange flavored ones (just watch out for the ones that have caffeine - like a mountain dew slushie), though I would indulge in a frozen coke once in a while too.

With my previous two pregnancies I took many trips to the ER for fluids. With my third pregnancy, it was winter and I had two children in tow. Also, waiting until I was already dehydrated didn't make sense to me. I insisted that there must be a better way to treat me. And low and behold there was! My doctor hooked me up with a home health agency. Through this agency (all covered by my insurance), I got visits at home from a nutritionist and a nurse. I ended up with an IV for daily fluids and IV Zofran. As awful as this sounds, I was grateful. The IV allowed me to function and care for my other two children. Although I had an IV and backpack, I was no longer suffering the effects of malnutrition and dehydration. I wished I had insisted on better preventative care with all of my pregnancies. Good Luck!
I used peppermint tea and fresh ginger tea in combination or alternating throughout my pregnancies. Usually just sipping throughout the day and then some in the evening before bed and it really helped me.
I know that there is a Rx for the morning sickness if it is really bad. As for the fluids try to mix it up a bit. With my first, I couldn't get enough in and had to drink Gatorade or I would get dehydration headaches. With my second, I was drinking seltzer water and didn't seem to have that issue....I guess I liked it better.
It may sound like it's too harsh for your stomach but citric acid. It will counteract the additional acid in your stomach and help with the queasiness. For me, grapefruit juice worked the best and V8 juice was also a good one for me, probably cuz it has citric acid and sodium. Also, salt of course, in pretzels, crackers, etc.
I never tried this cuz I just couldn't get past the smell of them when I was pregnant, but, eat the outer edge of cucumber slices. Supposedly that is a great naseau cure.

First, get yourself a copy of _Managing_Morning_Sickness_ by Miriam Erick -- it's got a lot of good suggestions. ( I believe it's available on Amazon). I had bad morning sickness in my first 2 pregnancies, and tried acupuncture with my 3rd -- it helped a lot -- took me from vomiting every time I ate to only once or twice a week. (if you want a referral to an acupuncturist near you, let me know and I'll ask on the massdoulas list) A midwife I have studied with suggests the juice of half a lime in a glass of water. A friend who has very severe morning sickness (like 20+ times/day) suggests lactofermented foods -- like saurkraut -- I know it sounds weird, but she says that it really really helped her -- she could always eat it and often could eat other things if it was part of a meal (there's a reason pickles are associated with pregnancy LOL) If you're having trouble drinking (water always made me particularly nauseous) try fruit with a very high water content -- like grapes or watermelon.
No to morning sickness tea is safe and very effective for morning sickness and nausea.
Half a unisom tablet at bedtime with a vitamin B6!! You will not have morning sickness at all. The combo is called diclectin in Canada but they don't have it in the states so I called my pharmacist in Canada while I was prego in the US and that is what he told me to do. I was on diclectin with all 3 of my previous pregnancies and my 4th I used this and it worked like a charm! Totally safe! I have 4 healthy, thriving children. This is the formula: 10 mg of doxylamine succinate (unisom) and 10 mg of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6)

first of all , eat some peanutbutter crackers and a cup of water before you get out of bed.
The only thing that didn't make me sick with my first was spaghitti o's , sounds weird but it's true.
Another trick I used was keeping a bag of peppermints with in reach and chain sucking on them, the peppermint oil will help the nausia, I use this with my motion sickness as well.
Some say ginger tea helps or chewing on crystallized ginger , but the crystallized stuff was too spicy for me.
Acupuncture was the only thing that touched my extreme vomiting. I was on my third at that point. It didn't eliminate it, but it helped lesson it a bit. I was unwilling to use pharmaceuticals. It is hard, though, and a lesson in surrender for me!
YIkes - be careful with the vitamin water stuff! It's not balanced, and every flavor has different vitamins, so unless you have a PhD in food science, don't mess with it! It can throw you off.
My prego friends use Innergize which is a better hydrator than Gatorade with less salt and sugar, patented (so it's safe, effective and unique), and made here in the U.S. under strict near-pharmaceutical grade conditions. It gets into your cells in 20 minutes so it hydrates better than anything else and you're not peeing it out. That will help the nausea. I can help you with more info - you can't buy it in a store but only from trained consultants who work with you. There is additional liquid nutrition you can add to it to get it into your body before you throw up, if you do. It's totally safe for pregnant women - lots of great stories of healthy babies and incredibly thick umbilical cords - so the baby will get the benefit. I actually don't live that far from you so I can get some to you if you want. Happy to give you the info - it's your decision of course.
Your lack of nutrition is getting you into this vicious cycle of nausea, exhaustion and feeling faint. Not good. It's also much harder because you are trying to manage this with 2 kids already - so I really feel for you.
Ginger is helpful too - that's why ginger ale works. Some people get confused and think any flat soda will do it, but it's the ginger. My neighbor munched on almonds - don't know if that works for anyone else. You may be beyond this, however! You might need more than just a trick or too.
Saltine Crackers...i kept them with me at all times they were my breakfast everyday lol.
