We have made the decision to make a move and have chosen Greensboro to put down our roots...I'm nervous...never have been out of the NorthEast...I've lived in my town for over 15 years and I knew all I needed to know for myself and my family. Can anyone give me the ins and outs...good neighborhoods to look at...ones to steer clear of...and most of all SCHOOLS!!! We'll be moving in the Spring...I'll have one going into 4th grade, 1st grade, Kindergarten and PreK...any suggestions? What is the application process. We have magnets schools in my town and it is done by lottery...where I grew up it was neighborhood determined...how is it there? Any way...Thanks! for all your help in advance!

Hi D.! We just moved to the area, too, from the NE (the Boston area). We checked out greatschools.com (or .org) before house hunting. We live in the Elon area b/c it's closer to my husband's work. This is off the subject, but my sister-in-law worked in Montclair at the Episcopal church up until a couple years ago. She and my brother lived there for about 5 years and I visited them quite a bit. Nice place! Good luck with you move.

Hi -
I have been living here for 4 years and really like it! I have a son starting kindergarten and 1 starting pre-k. The schools are neighborhood determined and there are magnet schools that are done by lottery. the website for guilford county is gcsnc.com where you can get info on all the schools and magnet schools and the application process for them. I have a spreadsheet with all the guilford county schools and how they scored if you would like me to e-mail it to you.
I have also been really happy with our pre-school - it is downtown and has a lot to offer the kids. If you want more info on that let me know.
when i moved here i joined a MOMS club and it really made a difference for me and my kids. They helped me with all the info i needed. My son is still friends with the kids from his playgroup that he started when he was a toddler.
Just let me know if you need anymore info.

Hello D.,
I moved down here from NJ about 2 yrs ago and the who9le family absolutely LOVES it here. We come from south NJ Maple Shade area, or as only others from NJ know exit 4 on TP! WE started out in Greensboro and are now in Gibsonville which is a bit more country than Greensboro. The schools here are excelelent. We started out at Jesse Wharton and are now in the Monticello Brown Summit Elementry. My daughter just graduated from Page High and is attending College at GTCC(Guilford Technical Community College) which is much better than the tech schools in NJ. I am considering goin myself.
The area we started out in wasn't exaclty top on my list. I would be glad to help ya in that area also. Considering I was in your shoes very recently, I know I was clueless. Picked a nice house in a "nice Neighborhood" but it wasn't as good as we thought. Anyway,, feel free to get in touch I can be found on both AOL and Yahoo as Shazzizme.

I can tell you about one of the most unique preK's in the area. It is called The Learning Palette Preschool and it is located where Jamestown, Greensboro and High Point meet in the southwest corner of Greensboro. Check out the website: www.learningpalette.com
There are some great neighborhoods in this area and the schools for these neighborhoods have good reputations. There are also magnet schools in the Guilford County system. Let me know if I can be of more assistance. My children are grown, but I have a wealth of resources in this field.

I moved from Mays Landing, NJ to Alexandria, VA and now am here in Randleman (not far from Greensboro, NC) They have a gym here called The Rush that is awesome, there is a room devoted to spin and the gym itself is huge. As far as school systems the Northwest side of Greensboro is where you want to live. We moved out to the country a little more because we wanted quiet and good schools for our three year old and we have found that here. The other option is living in Jamestown which is where our first home is which we still own and rent out. They also have good schools and it a desirable area. It is definatly different here but there is so much opportunity and amazing countryside here yet you are close to raleigh and Charlotte if you really desire the city life. I am an email away if you ever want to talk or get together once you move. My name is K. and I have a three year old wonderful son going on five.

Hi D., congrats on the decision to come to Greensboro. You are going to love it. I was born and raised in Massachusetts and came to Greensboro for college, without ever having seen anything south of Jersey. I loved it so much I am still here 15 years later. I have a daughter who is going into 3rd grade in a few days and a son who is in the four year old program at a local church (most the preschools are in churches down here). My daughter goes to a magnet school, General Greene the school of science and technology. We do not live in the district for that school and were chosen by lottery. We love it. There are numerous good, make that great, schools in Greensboro. if you go to www.gcsnc.com you can look up the statistics of each school. Personally I like the NW side of Greensboro. in and around the horse penn creek and lake Jeanette area is where you'll find 90% of my family. oh yeah they have all moved here within the last 5 years as well. After visiting, everyone has fallen in love with Greensboro. If you need a realtor, Barbara Anderson of Kriegsman & Associates is wonderful. ###-###-#### goes directly to voice mail) She can help you find a house and is very familiar with the schools in the area. I probably didn't answer all of your questions so if you need further information, feel free to contact me at

Hi,

I think you will like Greensboro - I moved hear 2 years ago and I love it. I do have my husbands family here so that is a bonus. It is small enough that you feel welcomed and not overwhelmed but big enough to offer a good variety of culture and diversity. There are a lot of great neighborhoods here. It depends on what you are looking for - older home, new home. We live in hamilton lakes and my kids will go to Morehead Elementary - which is a magnet school but if you live in the area then you child goes there automatically - or you can apply and it is done through lottery. Several of my friends that do not live in the area applied to get there children into morehead - it is an excellent school. Good luck.
