We Are Moving to the High Point/Greensboro Area

We are moving to the area. But I have no idea when-hopefully by the beginning of June. I need advice on how to find out about the schools-their ratings/student:teacher ratios/grades/ethnicity percentages/etc. I know a great web site for Texas schools (which is where are at right now)but am having a hard time finding anything comparable for this area. My son is in a school rated "Academically Recognized" right now and I want to keep it there or higher. "Exemplary" is the highest rating here which is a step above the "recognized". Education is very important to me even at this early stage. And if anybody knows of a good web site/realtor to find rental homes, that'd be great, too.

What can I do next?

All I have to say is I would never put my children in Guilford county schools. If you move to High Point move to Davidson County and use the public school system.I have a 23 year old son.He used Guilford County school and Forsyth county schools. All in k-5 as soon as he made 6th grade we moved to Davidson County and Iv been very pleased with how this school system works. Now God has blessed us with a 4 year old getting ready to start kindergarten in the fall and this issue is answered for us.We've been there and done this.......Davidson County is it for us!Good Luck.R.

I work at one of the local colleges in the Teacher Education department and handle the data for the schools which we place our students. One of the sites that I check often for demographic information of students is http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/. This site gives the demographics of the school (i.e. ethnicity, gender, free/reduced lunch, etc...). The only problem with the site is that the data is always a couple of years behind. Another site you may want to look at is http://www.ncreportcards.org/src/. This site contains the report cards for the schools. This will help you see how the schools are performing, average class size, number of students suspended/expelled, etc... This site contains information taken from the previous school year. I hope this helps.

Hi C.,
you can go to gcsnc.com (guilford county school North Carolina -includes Greensboro & High Point) to use the school locator for any address you find when looking at houses or you can just go there and look at the individual schools to see which you might like to focus your search for a home in that area. Each school had their own report card showing class size, testing scores, demographisc, etc. Very similar to what you are describing. it is very helpful. My Daughter (almost 8 years old) is at General Greene which is a magnet school. If you don't live in that zoning area you can apply to be placed in it no matter where you live in the county, however this is done I believe in mid-march. Other good schools in greensboro that I have friends with children at are Sternberger elementary, Claxton, & Jesse Wharton. All seem to be equally pleased with the schools. As far as a realtor I will suggest Barbara Anderson at Kreigsman and associates ###-###-####. She helped us find a home 10 years ago and we have had several family members use her services since then. She's now part of the family. her direct voice mail number if you want to leave a message is ###-###-####. feel free to email me if you have any questions on anything else in Greensboro. I moved from MA 14 years ago and love being here. We've just moved several family members here recently so I have info on a lot of the stuff you might need as someone just coming into the area. Good luck with your search.

I live in High Point, and my oldest daughter graduated last year from Guilford County Schools. My youngest is currently in 8th grade, and is in the AL program at Penn-Griffin Middle school. You can find info about our school district at www.gcsnc.com

Personally, we had a great experience at Shadybrook Elementary (k-5), but our middle schools are not the greatest. If you are not in the gifted or AL programs, things can be difficult. Buying in a specific neighborhood use to mean a difference in your 'districted' schools, but the way our GCS system constantly changes, it can make it a challenge for parents.

I do love High Point, don't get me wrong... but if you need public schools, buy a house in Davidson County. It borders High Point, and their property taxes are lower. Their schools are supported by the community, and they have a better overall understanding on our children's education.

If you can, private schools are great in High Point. We have High Point Christian Academy (k-12), Westchester County Day School (k-12) and several others. CJP (Craven-Johnson-Pollick) is a great realtor, and ask for one that 'has' a family, so they can talk to you with the correct knowledge of the schools.

Good -luck, and welcome.

Hello
I live in North High Point in the Skeet Club Rd area. We have excellent schools. Southwest has been named the school of excellence for the past 3 or 4 years now. We were considering private schools until we found out about southwest. I just enrolled my daughter in the kindergarden 2008 class and Im really excited. Go to gcs.edu and that will give you all the scores and things that should help you with your decision.

Honestly, I am from Atlanta, Georgia and was disappointed with the public school system here in High Point. I have seen and heard that some private schools are better. However, the old school superintendent for Guilford county is leaving and I am praying they bring in a guy or woman who can revamp the school system. Nowadays, it seems it is all about numbers, politics and money and not teaching kids any more but expecting them to take tests and that is it. I do hope you can find something good for your child. High Point Christian Academy, there is a Weslyan school on Centenial school in High Point, there is Westchester Academy, I belive it is called and a few others. God bless!
