P.K.
Actually Tampa would be one of the only places I would consider in Florida.
Have been there and liked it very much. However, that is a big decision.
Good luck in whatever you choose to do.
Do you think it's a good idea to relocate to Tampa. No job transfer. Husband wants out of NY. Do you think this is a bad move??? Live in good school district in LI. Scared to move. Trying to be positive, but not there yet... Any opinions?? Hopefully positive.. But really just want honesty...
i think it's great! The honesty! Why post if you can't hear bad with the good?? As long as it's not mean :)
I'm on the fence because I worry for my kids... But my hubby will have a job there because it will be a transfer upon his request. For me, I will stop working because of the kiddies, and moreso since we know NOONE there... But I'm up for adventure. Transition won't happen til next year. And if we're not happy then we'll come back.
For the first 2 ladies thanks for making me feel better regarding the possible move. I did visit and am interested in Lutz for schools and neighborhood :)
HOW DO I RESPOND TO THE ANSWERS AND GO BACK & FORTH???
fish hawk??? Will have to look that up. Kids range 3-11, 3 of them.wantfamily friendly neighborhoods with good school
And of course safe neighborhood. Also wouldn't mind near shopping areas :)
DON'T KNOW HOW TO POST. EW RESPONSES TO THE RESPONSES IM GETTING :( if yOu know how I can please tell me) ...
KEEP RESPONSES COMING! Love reading... Nice to see all the different responses... As far as WHY hubby wants to move... He just simply wants out of NY. We had looked at the other states and feel that FL would be the better for us... My first choice would be CA, but that is def unaffordable for us (NO offense my soon to be fellow Floridians :)) so happy to read that you feel my children could handle the transition... I sure hope so! Again... Thanks so much for the honesty!
THERESA Q.: thanks for that. Considering your friend lives in Lutz, means alot to me. I have to ask how your friend feels about the school system within that area (McKitrick, Martinez & Steinbrenner) does she not feel that the kids will receive a decent education there? I feel that if the school is ok then I as a parent must do my job as well as reinforce & at that point will my kids be ok. What makes her want to come back?

We moved from PA to central FL over a year ago (about an hour and a half from Tampa). I love living here we got so tired of the cold and snow. Your children are young so they should handle the transition easily. Sorry I can’t help with the neighborhoods or schools there.
Manda F you can stay where you're at. I always wondered why people want to live where it rains 360 days out of the year. The weather is very depressing there.
Hey! I moved to Orlando from Charlotte NC a year ago and LOVE it! I hated the cold and snow Charlotte got and florida is more like home in Phoenix:) funny thing is we are actully moving to Clearwater FL next month, it's right near Tampa. I say move! A change never hurt anyone
Check out Fishhawk Ranch in Lithia!!! Amazing schools - Wonderful community and so much more
BTW I was raised in S. Tampa - my whole family is from Tampa and yes Lutz is good - have friends there but I think Fishhawk is wonderful :)
What type of neighborhood are you looking for? Ages of your kids? Interests? Wants/Needs?
Hi CC
I moved with my family as a child from NY to Miami area at the age of 8 and my brother 6.
I think change is always great....
You received great advice, I will add another perspective perhaps.
NY to Florida is not only a climate change but a lifestyle change. a change in culture and attitude. neither is better or worse. Just different.
As a child, at first it was hard for me as I missed 'city' life. I grew to enjoy the laid back atmosphere of South Florida and relish it. I became active in sports and so forth...Now both parts are part of my personality.
Whatever decision you make will be fine.

Hi There,
Here's honesty... I would never move to Tampa or anywhere else in FL. My best friend lives in Lutz. She moved to Tampa w/her ex, had a child and now is stuck there. She has primary custody, but shared custody so she can't move back north. Anyway, she has a good job and a new fiance (who is great), but still doesn't love it there (she makes the most of it). We go often to visit her... I love visiting because of the warm weather and attractions, but would not want to live there. I don't like the way FL doesn't seem to have towns and neighborhoods the way the NE does, but does have a lot of highways with random new developments interspersed w/ trailer parks and strip malls. Also, for the most part, schools in general are not as good... FL has one of the lowest rankings as far as school/education quality... not that you can't get a good education down there, but overall, the education you are going to get in NY is going to be superior. (she works at a University and has been to many high schools down there and has seen it first hand compared to what she has seen up North). That being said, I have only lived in MA, and NY and went to school in CT, so I guess I am biased to the North East. I am sure there are many good arguments as to why FL is a better place to live... ie. more relaxed lifestyle, lower cost of living etc. Like you said, you can always move back if you don't like it. I wish my friend had that option when she was miserable before she met her current fiance. Good Luck w/ your decision!
Why does your husband want out of NY? And how old are your kids?
We moved to southeast Florida from the midwest about 11 years ago. My kids were 7 & 4.
I never, ever miss winter. Ever. I LOVE sunshine and warm weather. That being said, I'm sick of the people down here (the Tampa side might be better but I've never lived there) . And sometimes my kids complain about missing snow.
If you're leaving family and have a good neighborhood I'd give it alot of thought first. Also, from what I understand NY is better if you have special-needs kids.
On the flip side, FL is very homeschool-friendly (our current lifestyle). There is no state income tax either. There are finally some good real estate buys again.
There are so many variables, and it really depends on why your husband wants to move.
Good luck with the decision.
