Although I was born and raised in my city/state I have always HATED it here. I despise cold weather, and we get more then our fair share. It has been cold/snowy/rainy/gloomy here since September!! Since I was a kid I've dreamed of moving somewhere south. My husband finally said that if I could research, and find him a better job in the next two years that he'd agree to go!!! While I think he doesn't really believe I'll do it, I am determined! So my question for you ladies is can you give me recommendations for locations?
Now I'm not looking for paradise here, but somewhere where the weather is more pleasant then not. We are in Ohio, and I don't want to move TOO far. I'm thinking Tennessee, Georgia, Southern Kentucky etc. Somewhere that my kids and i can enjoy being outdoors ALOT, good school systems and economy etc. My husband has his Bachelors degree in Automated Manufacturing Engineering. He is currently on a engineering sales team w/ his company. They produce air brakes for commercial vehicles. He's super smart, he can pick up anything! I'd love to hear if you are from a place like this and if you love it there! And how I'd go about marketing my husband for a new job down the road!
TIA :)

What can I do next?

My husband and I have been talking about this very same thing. We're in Ohio too, born and raised. I'm so sick of winter! We've talked about Kentucky, South Carolina and Georgia. We even kicked around the idea of Arizona for awhile. I am just too comfortable where I am to make that leap. I want to, but I'm scared :)

Good luck!

I live in NY and I do love it here but due to cost of living we have decided to relocate in a couple of years. Personally we are looking at Florida, Tampa Bay area. A good website I like is http://www.city-data.com/forum/ which has alot of info on different places from people. Obviously you have to realize it is alot of people's opinions and may or may not match your values and opinions but the info is useful anyways...

Good luck to you! I think it's silly to stay somewhere you are not happy.

If you don't want it to get to hot you might try to stay near the Blue Ridge Mountains, you could start at one end near GA and work your way up.
I would also say only your husband would really know what kind of work environment he would enjoy. So be careful trying to find something for him.

I am wishing for the same thing, but opposite! We live in AZ and cannot wait to get out of the heat. I know it sounds weird, but months of blue skies and 100+ degree weather is as bad as gloomy weather. You cannot do anything (besides swimming) outside in the summer and even that is like swimming in bath water. And that is when we have 3 months off of school!! Its funny but I think the same thing with moving north, that they can spend more time outdoors. (Although I don't want to go too far north :)

We cannot wait to get to where it snows....when my kids get a little taste of winter they want more. I want to be somewhere where there are seasons and it does not go above 100 degrees.

I hope you can help him find a job elsewhere! Just keep looking for jobs in his field and help him apply to them. Lots of cities now have free resume/interview classes and I think anyone can benefit from them.

Good luck!

We moved 1500 miles south, fron Fargo, ND to San Antonio, TX. I was offered a job before we moved. I sent my resume to several school districts in Texas (had to go where the teacher shortage was at the time), and spent HOURS on the phone in phone interviews. I flew down for a week and tried to schedule as many in-person interviews then as I could. While all of that was happening we had an estate sale to sell as much of our stuff as possible, and listed our house on the market in Fargo. I was offered a job and had to be here in TX 8 days later, so i was SO happy I had done so much work ahead of time.

We moved into an apartment for the first 6 months, so we could see neighborhoods in person and decide once we were here for ahwile what district we wanted to live by. We then purchased a home.

We did not have any children, so it was much easier for us than if we had them at that time. I can tell you that I LOVE raising my kids in a warm-weather state. They can play outside all year long, no bundling them up in snow-suits etc. Love it!

We relocated from north to south about 10 years ago. The most critical thing is to narrow down your search - go visit a few times, then find a good job, then move!
We did the moving first, then the job search, but we were fresh out of college and had no kids/house/debt, etc.
Also, it is very frustrating using Monster, etc. to find long distance jobs. when you go to these site visits, have your husband set up some "informational" interviews with companies in the area that could be a future employer.
Call someone in the department indicate you are contemplating a move and would like to come in see/learn more about their company. Even better if you can use linked in to find someone you know who knows someone in the business to make a warm call.
THese are just some things I wish I had done prior to our moving! Best!

We are kind of far from you, but I love CENTRAL FL! I don't think we will ever live anywhere else! My family and my in laws live about 3 hours south of us, we are 40 mintues from Disney, Universal, Sea World. The weather changes here, but it never gets too hot or too cold. We can go swimming April-November (sometimes earlier). We get to wear jackets and coats occasionally.

I honestly think FL has everything. From beaches to cabins in the woods.

In the south you wil get the heat And it will get hot. But it is easier to adjust to the heat than to the cold.
I am from Chicago and haved lived in CA, NC, and VA. I like the weather of NC coasts best.
