Hi Michelle. We moved to Newport News last summer and really like it. We live in Hilton Village, which is in midtown Newport News between Warwick Boulevard (rte 60) and the James River. It is a great place to live with kids. People are friendly, the river and playground at Hilton Elementary are close by, and there are several preschools and churches within walking distance. It is also not too far from Mount Carmel, which is a very friendly church. I don't know a lot about the school. Hilton Elementary is supposed to be very good (my youngest starts next year) and Warwick High School has an International Baccalaureate program. I've heard mixed reviews of the middle schools. St. Andrew's Episcopal has a prek-5 school, and my daughters go to Hilton Presbyterian Preschool, which we love. We also also close to Huntington Park and a YMCA there.
The city of Newport News offers ballet and gymnastics classes at Riverside Gymnastics Center; they may offer martial arts as well. The YMCA may also have classes. I have also seen ballet and martial arts classes in buildings along Warwick Boulevard. We go to the pediatricians at the Children's Clinic, which is 321 Main Street. We like Dr. Broderick. We have gone to Dr. Trolenberg on Jefferson Avenue for a family dentist.
The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) has several thrift stores in the area.
Hope your move to Newport News goes well and that you like it as much as we do!
