Moving to S.A. from FL. HELP, I Need All the Info I Can Get!

My husband has been offered a job in the San Antonio area....all that's left is finalizing everything! We currently live in Jacksonville, FL and I have NEVER been to TX....and although I'm pretty excited about the move I am VERY overwhelmed right now!

Here in FL my daughter missed the cut-off for Pre-K by ONE day and they have a no exceptions policy. Can anyone tell me how it all works in TX? Is there a Free Pre-K program or not? Does TX at least test kids with a birthday like my daughters to see if they are ready to go ahead and start kindergarten?
We are definitely looking to live in the NEISD area....can anyone recommend a great Preschool in that area?

I'm also looking for recommendations for realtors, neighborhoods, parks, playgroups/moms groups.....ANY info you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated!

THANKS!

Try a MOPS group, and I would recommend starting with the one at Castle Hills First Baptist -- it is a big group of 50+ moms from all over the city. Small groups are organized by zip so people can get to know others in their area. Best wishes!

Judy Dalrymple is the BEST realtor in San Antonio. She is with Phyllis Browning, her number is ###-###-####. Her website is goseejudy.com (i think). She is WONDERFUL, down to earth, and not a bit pushy.

Pre-K here is for children who qualify, I'm not sure of the exact things but I think you can look it up under Head Start Programs. Your best bet is to find a private preschool here. Coker Day School is a wonderful school, small, nice people. They have 3, 4, and 5 classes plus kindergaten.

NEISD is a HUGE area, so be picky about which specific schools you want. What area of San Antonio are you looking in?

Good Luck and welcome to San Antonio!

We moved here three years ago, so I know your predicament. My friend Kerry is one of the top realtors in San Antonio and is really good at her job:
Kerry Dike, GRI, ABR, ALHS

www.kerrydike.com
Coldwell Banker, D'Ann Harper, REALTORS
7523 N Loop 1604 W
San Antonio, TX 78231
###-###-#### cell
###-###-#### office
###-###-#### fax
a licensed real estate agent in the state of Texas
####-###-####

Huebner Elementary is a great NEISD elementary with a range of nice apartments and houses within its borders (like Deerfield, Rosewood Gardens). Kerry could give you more info on neighborhoods and schools. Her daughter's in my son's kinder class.

I like the little playground at Eisenhower park and the new creekside trail at Huebner near Churchill Estates.

Love NW Pediatrics, ###-###-####. My friend takes here kids to Dr. MCCray on heubner and raves about her.

Hope that's helpful.

Welcome to San Antonio. It's a great place to live and raise a family.

We moved to SA in August. We bought a home in the medical center area. We love it here. There isn't any traffic in our area. The school district is also good. We live in the Northside school district. Here we are 15 minutes from downtown, close to doctors, close to malls. Below is our realtor's information. He help us and was so patient and helpful. I was also out of town and her would email me listings. Give him a call. About the school thing...the date in TX is Sept 1st. My son missed it by 2 days. No school would make an exception, at first I was not happy, now, he's in fourth grade and is smartest and best kid in his class! If they would've made an exception, he would probably be the youngest in his class and not have the accolades he enjoys now. But, I do know that if your child attends Kinder in an acredited school, the district will accept that and allow them to enter 1st the following year.

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need any more info.

Hi,
I live in the NEISD. My neighborhood is called Kentwood Manor and/or Oakhaven Heights. I really like it. The houses are far apart and everyone has lots of yards. There are a fair number of houses for sale in our neighborhood for good prices, and there are lots of kids here.

We are in the catchment area for Thousand Oaks Elementary, which gets really good reviews on the websites I've checked. The bus picks up all over the neighborhood.

My Realtor was Karen Fulgum, and I think she was good. She's very attentive, and she got us what we wanted.

Good luck with the move! We love it here.

Good luck with your move! You should look into joining MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) through one of the local churches. I've done the one at Community Bible Church and it was a really wonderful group. Also, I taught kindergarten and there is no policy about children starting kinder before they turn 5. I think you will have to put her in a private preschool and wait until next year. I would call the main offices for NEISD and make sure though. Good luck with Everything!

I've lived in San Antonio most of my life and my favorite part is Windcrest. We bought a home here about 3 years ago and it is wonderful! We are in NEISD but Windcrest is actually it's own city in the middle of San Antonio! We have our own fire and police, so none of the 3 hours waits you get from living in San Antonio proper. We have TWO duck ponds, a golf course with a walking track, and a great playground and community center. Windcrest is known in San Antonio for being the "city of lights" because every year at Christmas we have a city wide light-up competition and it's so much fun! We have tons of parades and festivals for the kids. It's a very family oriented neighborhood and every street is 20 mph which makes it great for bike rides and walks. Most of the homes here have pools and nice yards and the homes go for around 150,00-170,000 for a 3 bedroom. I'm not a realtor, I've just lived all over San Antoio and really love this spot. No traffic and 10 min to downtown, 7 min to Alamo Heights. The city has a webpage http://www.ci.windcrest.tx.us/ Email me if you have any other questions.

I can help you with a couple of your requests. There are a lot of great parks and other family friendly places to go in SA. I am also the orginizer of a very actcive play group for the NE area http://www.meetup.com/sanemoms/about/?name=About_this_Meetup if you are interested when you fill out the info indicate you found us by recomendation on mamasource.
As far as prek goes it is a "need based" program thru the school district. There is an income limit or if you are active duty military or acouple of other things.
I had a great realtor when we moved here her name is Rosa Galdos with Caldwell Banker http://cbharper.com/realtor/rosa-galdos/
Good luck in your move!
