Moving with a Toddler - Floral Park,NY

My husband and I will be moving soon to a bigger house. We have a seventeen month old little girl. I was just wondering how to make the transition a little smoother. I am fortunate to have my mother to baby-sit when we clean the house, paint a little and on moving day. We are planning to move in slowly over the course of at least a few weeks to a month. I know it will be difficult trying to get things done with a toddler so I figure if I can work on one room a day, I've accomplished something. Thank you moms' for any advice!

What can I do next?

We moved from an apartment to a house when my son was just under 3. Have your toddler visit the new house with you several times and get excited about his/her new room.

We moved to my mom's house for a week while the move itself was happening. My son is used to being at her house and we didn't want him tripping over boxes etc. So he only came into the new house once most of the mess was out of the way and things were 'babyproofed'. (This is easier with a 3 year old than an 17 month old).

Good luck moving!

When I move I set the kitchen up first. That way when I'm tired of unpacking, I have dishes and glasses for a meal/snack, and breakfast the next morning!

The second thing I do is setup and make the beds. I keep all of the linens in a box that I have in my car so I know right where it is. Start with your son's room first so that he'll be settled quickly. You don't need the whole room decorated, just the bed and a light to get things started.

Ditto the kitchen first plus a bathroom and his room. If Grandma is willing to help by watching him at her house you will get so much done so much faster.
Otherwise I found working at naptimes and after bedtime worked best. My hubby would "do the baby" and I would paint. Or we would knock out boxes while watching tv in the evening.
Give the little guy a box and paper in a mostly empty room.
