Multiple C-sections....

I have had 3 children, all by c-section, and my last was delivered almost 7 weeks ago. With the first two I was back to my normal active self within 2 weeks or so, with just occasional soreness. However this time, it's been 7 weeks and I still get really sore most days. If I have a busy morning, it's all I can do to walk in the evenings. By the time I finished grocery shopping yesterday, I thought I was going to fall over in pain. Sometimes even getting out of the bed is difficult in the mornings because I am in pain around my incision. My incision (on the outside) looks to be healing the perfectly and the doctor agreed at my 6 week check. He says that it just takes longer with every c-section to recover and that still feeling sore is normal. I love my doctor & trust what he says, I just wonder if something could be wrong (on the inside) that we are not seeing.

Moms who've had multiple c-sections - did you have more soreness with each surgery? If so, were you still having pain at 7 weeks? I've heard some women have lots of pain for months after c-sections, but my other two were so easy I am not understand why the most recent one is so different.

I really appreciate your advice - thanks!

I think you may be doing too much. It takes a full 8 weeks to recover.

I've had 4 C-sections and it took longer to recover each time. When I had the last one, they removed lots of scar tissue before closing me up.

Try to slow down a bit and take it easy.

I've had 3 c-sections and a surgery to remove an ovary prior to the 1st c-section, so I've had 4 incisions in exactly the same spot. My experience has been completely opposite. My first surgery was the worst. The pain lasted over 6 weeks and my incision was sticking to my internal organs and pulling. I remember going back to work after my 6 weeks medical leave and it hurt to walk up stairs and even sitting down and getting up my from my chair was a challenge. I don't remember what painkillers I took, but they didn't seem to work. Since that was my first time ever having any type of surgery, I thought what I was going through was normal. That was almost 10 years ago and I don't remember how long it took for me to feel back to normal. After my 1st c-section they gave me naproxen and that was great. I think I took it for maybe 2 weeks and then didn't need it. After each c-section I healed faster and felt back to normal faster. My last c-section I took the medicine they gave me in the hospital, but I didn't need to fill my prescription for home. I don't know how medically true it is, but I think after they cut me 4 times in the same spot the nerves were no longer as sensitive; perhaps they don't grow back after being cut so many times. I'm sorry your experience hasn't been the same. I don't know if perhaps you are trying to do to much to quickly and you aren't giving your body a chance to heal. I know with 3 kids, you feel like you can't stop to take a break and recover, but maybe you need to slow down a little more longer. I was in the same position 2 years ago. My kids are now 7,6 and 2; 2 girls and my little boy. Take care and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I've had 3 c-sections as well, and my last was about 12 weeks ago. This one has definitely been the hardest to recover from. I think it's a combination of having the same incision site 3 times and having more children to take care of. I had twins this last time and have been busy - and didn't take enough time to make sure I was healing properly and my incision got infected. It was yucky. I was fine at my 6 week check then the infection just took over in a few weeks. But, it sounds like you are healing well, it just takes more time.

Good luck! And congratulations!

My SIL had 3 c-sections as well, and with the 2nd one, she was in EXTREME pain. Her 1st was easy, as well as the 3rd. She kept going to her doctor, and they said it was normal, she was overexagerating, etc. She went to a new doc and after an examination, not sure if they ran tests, but he said that she wasn't healling properly. She looked fine on the outside, but the inside hadn't closed up yet and, I believe, an infection was starting. I would definitely get a 2nd opinoin before it gets worse and you're out of commission.

Did your doctor or hospital give you one of the big elastic bands to wear around your waist? I couldn't have functioned at all without mine. I think the soreness is normal, your muscles are probably taking longer to recover after being cut 3 times. If you can get one of the elastic things and wear it really tightly under your clothes you will feel much better!

I've had 3 c-sections and with each one the pain was less. I would get a second opinion because your pain should be getiing better by the time you go for your follow-up.

I've had 4 C-Sections and they were all different. The first wasn't too bad, the second was agony during postpartum, the third went great, and my last one wasn't too bad. I think it must have something to do with the doctors technique in the delivery room either while performing the actual section or when they sew you up. If you have some type of infection inside you would most likely develop a fever or some type of other symptoms. I would give it @ 2 more weeks, and if the pain still isn't gone, I would go to a new Dr., I wouldn't even bother going to yours again if that is at all possible insurance wise. Hope you feel better soon!

I had LESS soreness with each one, and I strongly recommend that you ask your doctor for an u/s to make sure that everything is good on the inside.

I had two c-sections and I thought the 2nd one was harder to recover from, but not by much. Have you thought that you might be doing too much? With those young kids, I'm sure you're not sitting still, recovering. My advice is to get off your feet as often as you can and just let your body heal. Obviously, if it continues, keep bugging your doctor about it. You could also go to a general practicioner for a second opinion - it never hurts anything! But, I found that I was doing too much and pain would just pop up out of nowhere. So, really try to slow down and get hubby/friends/family to help with the kids, the house, dinner, etc. After a couple weeks, you'll probably be back to normal supermom!!

I have had 3 C's as well and each one WAS harder especially because I had little ones running around with each subsequint c section. My 3rd and final c ssection I had my tubes tied as well and that made me more sore. Also, it takes longer for the subsequint ones to heal becasue the skin has been damaged so many times. with my 3rd one, the day I got home from the hospital, I was climbing up in my bed to get into bed (I had literally just gotten home) and my incision split open (on the top layer) and blood and fluid squirted out everywhere and I thought I was dying...

turned out that I had a SEROMA (fluid build up behind the incision and it caused pressure to build up and rupture the skin to release the pressure built up). if it has not done that I would have gotten an infection and could have gotten Super sick... but it all turned ok. It took 8 weeks of packing the wound for it to heal on its own but that is my multiple c story.

You are probably bruised inside and its just sore...if you had any bleeding inside the skin on the outside would bruise and turn red/and purple.

Hope that helps, feel better soon!

I didn't have either of my kids by c-section, but just a thought; maybe there is some scar tissue there. Especially with 3 surgeries, scar tissue could have built up and that's where the soreness is coming into play.
Just a thought....

I have had 2 and after my first one I was great, very little pain... but after the 2nd it took me a while to bounce back. Close to 3 months. Just dont push it and let your body heal as it needs to.

Good luck, I know its hard when you need to hurry and feel better to take care of your kiddos!

I am with you. I would have the same concern that you do. I, too, had three c-sections. Due to the first one being severly breetch (sp), they were all traditional or vertical sections from the bellybutton down. Mine actually was easier the second time and even easier yet with the third. I did have problems about 10 months after the first two with adhesions, but I think that you are too early in the healing process for that to be the case.

Just stick to your guns with your doctor and I am sure that between the two of you, you can get this fixed. You know your body better than anyone else!!!
