How Can I Get My 14 Year Old to Enjoy School?

I have a 14 year old son who has dislike school since second grade. It has been a constant struggle to get him up in the morning and to motivate him to take pride in his school work. He is very bright, but puts the minimum amount of effort into his work. I have stressed the importance of education, I have tried bribes, rewards and everything else I can think of to motivate him..nothing works. I would welcome your suggestions.

10 Year Old Girl's B-day Ideas

Hello, I have a 9 year old daughter turning 10 in May and we are looking for some B-Day party ideas. This birthday seems to be a little more special for her and she is already wanting to plan it. She is looking for something different than skating, putt-putt or bowling. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We are in the Mid Cities area.

Time to Wean???

I'm having trouble deciding if I should wean my 10-week old baby girl. I feel that my reasons are totally selfish and that I'm not doing what's best for her. We've had all sorts of trouble breastfeeding, but I kept at it. She had such a strong suck that my nipples had open wounds, though the lactation consultant said it was a good latch. And she ate so slow it was taking 45 minutes or longer. Then my milk was low and she was loosing weight, so I had to supplement with formula or expressed milk. Now I pump for every feeding. She also...

15 Month Old at 9Th Percentile in Weight... So Worried...

I need advice from anyone who can help. I am concerned for my 15 month old son who is having trouble gaining weight. Yesterday, his doctor said that he is in the 9th percentile in regards to his weight. I am extremely worried since he has gone from being in the 20th percentile last month to now being on the 9th percentile. What should I do to help him gain weight? He is a picky eater but loves his fruits and veggies....any good advice is really appreciated at this moment. Thanks!

12 Year Old Boys...

My girlfriend has a 12 year old boy that is truly driving her nuts. I give as good of advice as I can, but really I raised girls, Im sure its different. Her son, has started "dating" a 13 year old girl (who mom doesnt like hehe), is pretty disrespectful to his mom, he is spoiled with cash & fancy electronics by his Dad that lives in a different city. He wants to "go out" on dates with the girlfriend, I think in groups it should be ok...? He has no experience using transit alone- I think now is a good time to learn... theres a bunch of stuff...

Son Having Trouble in Kindergarten

My son is so excited about being in school. He looks forwarding to going in the morning and seems happy when he comes home. He attends AM Kindergarten, KinderDay in the afternoon and then Latchkey until I pick him up after work. Having been in a very structured day care for the past 3 years, he seems to have made the transition very well - even though the changes to his schedule have been pretty big. He rarely had behavior problems in day care but the feedback from the elementary school is horrible. Every day - literally - we have...

Helping to Learn Letters

I just put my 4-year old son into a new daycare and compared to the other children he is "behind". The other children in his class can all regonize their first and last names and write their first name, we have beeen working some on our letters but only capital(which is how I was told was the easiest way for them to learn) the daycare teaches both upper and lower case so he does not even regonize any of the letters they try to get him to write for his name. The problem is by the time he gets home from school I can probably keep his...

Riding a Bike

I am so beside myself on what it takes to teach a 10 year old how to ride a bike ?Is this a difficult thing ? My child has no balance at all. We have tried various times since she was 6 and granted it was a day or two here and there......but she does not get it. She is so off balance and she does not even try to get herself up again. She depends on us to hold her up. She is distracted and looking around. Not focused. Someone mentioned about equalibrium ???? If that is how it is spelled , IS there any advice on this subject..........

Bed Time for 10 Year Old

I am the mother of 3 healthy, active children. Recently, my husband and I have been in disagreement about what time my oldest (10 years old) should be allowed to stay up at night. I feel 8:45 for the 10 yr old is good since he must be up at 6:45am to get the bus at 7:30 am for school. I am the one who gets the kids ready for bed, reads to them, makes sure teeth are brushed, etc and my husband travels for work often so he is not home. When he is home he is usually watching TV, especially sports in the evening. But, my husband thinks the...

14 Year Old Thinks Rules Too Strict - NO MORE RESPONSES PLEASE. THANKS for ALL!

My 14 year old daughter seems to think a few of my rules are too strict. So, she asked me if I’d get the opinion of other mothers – particularly those I don’t know personally – and who have daughters her age. The rules she disagree with are as followed: My daughter can only attend two outings per month. Note: This includes things like going to the movies, hanging out at the mall, birthday parties, etc. This also includes spending the night away from home. My daughter thinks she should be allowed to do more each month and...

Summer for a 12 and 10 Year Old - Leave Them Home Alone?

So my friend has 2 kids - a 12 year old girl and a 10 year old boy. As a family, they take two weeks off during the summer. For the other 6 plus weeks, she plans to leave them home alone while she and her husbad work 9-5 Monday - Friday. There are camps they can send them to that are not expensive (money is not an issue). They will likely go to a one week camp (for sports) for a week or two but that's it. Would you leave you 12 and 10 year old at home for 4+ weeks over the summer? I think they are insane. I think it's insane...

Too Young to Be Teething?

My son is exhibiting symptoms of teething... He has been chewing on his fists and acting hungry, but isn't hungry or doesn't want to nurse. He is drooling excessively, like soaking his face and outfits. Today he was slightly fussy and acting uncomfortable. He stopped doing all this over the weekend, but it picked back up today. Could he be teething? He's only 3 months old. I've read that babies can possibly teethe at 3 months, but they usually don't start until about 6 or 7 months. When did your babies teethe? Since drooling, fussing and...

Tummy Troubles for 10 Year Old

My 10 year old daughter has had a history of tummy troubles: Upset stomach, constipation or diarrhea. We think that we we have made a correlation between milk, yogurt and ice cream and the diarrhea, so we have just cut those out of her diet She also seems to get a nervous stomach. I am not sure about giving her a probiotic because of her age. My pediatrician was less than helpful, kind of brushing off the whole issue :maybe it could help maybe not". Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
