My 7 Month Old BM....

First of all, I start him with a bowl of oatmeal mixed with fruit every morning. Then few hours later with a 4 or 6 oz bottle of formula. For dinnertime, a jar of vegetables and a jar of fruit. Well, when he poops its a dark color and kind of mushy but hard. My son had a problem with spitting up. And My doctor recommended me to lessen his formula and give him solid foods. That's why he doesn't consume no more than 8-10 oz of milk. What can I do to change it?

What can I do next?

Breastmilk or formula is primary nutrition for the first year!!! I can't stress that enough. Food is only for practice. It will not and does not provide enough of what an infant needs for proper growth and development. You always offer breastmilk or formula then solids (usually an hour- hour 1/2 later).

And a hard bowel movement means there is not enough liquid in the diet which would make sense if he is only getting 4-6 ounces of formula per day. I hope you just left out some info for us and he is actually getting the proper amount of formula as advised by your pediatrician. Like Sarah D. I can't advise to amounts of formula as i exclusively breastfed. What does his doctor say?

Is he ONLY getting 4-6oz of formula?! He should be getting just as much formula as before you started solids (I don't know how much that is, I breastfeed, but something like 4-6 bottles with 4-6 oz each, right?). Solids aren't supposed to be his meals yet. Always start by feeding him his formula, then giving him some solids so he's learning to eat. Everything he needs he should be getting from formula until after 12 months old, solids are just a bonus for now.

When my daughter was 7 months I think I was only offering her that baby rice stuff mixed with some formula. She still got most of her nutrition from formula. I offered her solids as treats.

At 7 month babies should get their primary nutrition from their formula or breast milk. At this stage, I believe they should consume 21-32 oz per day. I think your baby needs more formula.

I'm just chiming in to agree with everyone else. A 7 month old should be getting a good 5 feedings of formula/breastmilk per day (maybe 4, but with this heat, maybe more like 6). A quick google estimated about 26-32 ounces of formula per day. As other people said, the body of an infant doesn't really pull the nutrients from solid foods as well as it does liquid. It hasn't developed enough yet - and also, there's dehydration. I'm sure there are more bottles than that, but there should be significantly more.

shouldnt he be drinking more formula than that a day? but even still i dont see whats wrong with his poops. as long as they arent too hard for him to get out and arent runny he's good i'm thinking.
