My Daughter Keeps Throwing Up!

My daughter is 21 months old and in the past 4-6 months has beeen throwing up pretty regularly. (at least twice every 3 weeks) we have spoken to her doctor who seemed less than concerned and said it was probably new foods being introduced to her diet. I tend to think this is not the case and we are in the process of finding a new doctor to take her to. Just wanted to ask around and see if anyone else has ever has this happen. She usually starts throwing up in the middle of the night and by the next evening is back to being 100%. This morning she wanted to eat and was swollowing her first bite and it came back up. She is our first child and I realize kids get sick but this seems a bit to often. Any advice will help. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I know what Jennifer S is talking about. When I had my first child, Anthony, he was 2 weeks old and started throwing up after EVERY feeding. When we took him to the hospital, which comes to a story I don't even wanna get into, he ended up being admited because our family doctor had done an upper G.I. on him. He ended up going to Childrens. He had this disorder called Pyloric Stenosis. It is common in males.
I would suggest that you find a peditrician and talk about that problem and see if you could get that test done.
And before you do, count how many soiled and wet diapers you get out of her in a week. (my son was giving us very little wet diapers and no dirty ones)
My son is now 2 and the only problem he has is acid reflux which we give him znatac, but other than that he's has healthy as ever!!
I wish you the best of luck and let me know how things went.

just an idea....but is your daughter taking any medication...even multi vitamins??? my son used to vomit spontaneously while he was taking a prescription laxative(it didnt matter when the meds were given and it wasnt every day)(and my sons doctor also didnt care)but i am sure that was it because as soon as i stopped giving it,he stopped and has not vomited since...and that was three years ago...also, i "get sick" if i take a multi vitamin on an empty stomach.... .

if your childs doctor is not taking it seriously than please find another doctor...one that respects your gut that is telling you that something may be off....it may not be anything to worry about, but i wouldnt stop until i figured out why..... i wish you the best of luck and i sincerely hope everything is fine...R.

Hi K.,

I used to have the same problem with my son. He used to throw up in the middle of the night, but it seemed as if no one else was getting sick. We went up to AI Dupont Hospital and had a gastic emtpying scan done and found out he had reflex. This what the doctors at AI told me to do write down everything she ate and record if she got sick or not. If she has reflex her stomach may not beable to eat certain foods. I hope this helps it is just something i went through with my son. I hope everything gets better with you.

Dear K.,
Your daughter may have GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). My youngest son had this. He took 2 medications, prescribed by his pediatrician which helped him greatly. This was several years ago, so the meds may be more advanced now. Definitely see a pediatric gastroenterologist if you can. Not all kids who throw up have it, but if she does, the acid that flows up from the stomach is not good for the esophagus. You might want to try raising the head of her mattress just a couple of inches, and let gravity help her in the meantime. Lynn Duffy, MD is a wonderful specialist in the DC/VA area. We were able to see her in a MD office. Best of luck to you.

Hello,
My neice did this as well and NONE of the Doctors believed my siter or brother in law till she finbally threw up her meal in fron of them at CHOP(she was not in for this she had another unrelated issue-osteomylitis) the food was still whole. It was severe reflux-which many infants and toddlers due have they have now determined- she took priolesic or reglan for about 6 -8 months and it resolved on her own, but she hates chocolate and is a very picky eater becasue of all the things she threw up.
Please discuss this possibilty. SHe did not show signs of it while being breastfeed or formula fed or on infant food. But she did loose about 3 pounds before it was corectly dx and she looked very skinny- from 18lbs at a year to 14 or 15lbs at 14 months!

I just wanted to say you are not alone! My son (almost 20 months) had NEVER thrown up until about a month ago when he threw up all night - started at about 3:30 in the morning and stopped at about noon. He did it one week later and then almost 2 weeks after that. This last time was really bad and when we took him to the Dr., he said it was stomach virus and it's been going around... It lasted for 5 days with him throwing up about 2 or 3 times every day and 1/2. WE gave him very small portions to eat - toast, bananas, crackers... and lots of gatorade and now his appetite is back and he hasn't thrown up in 10 days. I hope it won't happen again but I don't know and the next step would be a GI specialist as the others have said but an upper GI would be very uncomfortable for her so I hope it doesn't come to that and maybe it's just been a viral thing for you as well, although since it's been months I think I would at least go to see a specialist.
Good luck and I hope to read an update from you!

I would really like to know what you found out because my daughter is having the same problem. She is 15 months and it started at 5 months. It started after i quit nursing. I thought she just had a bad time with getting sick but it just happens to much.

My son threw up everyday around the time that he was a year old. He showed no other signs of illness. I asked the doctor, and he said it was a phase, he will grow out of it. I talked to my chiropractor about it, and he suggested that we take him off of milk for a week or so and see what happens. We tried it, and he did not throw up again after about 2 days. We gave him soy milk or rice milk until he was about 2, then tried the cows milk again, and he was fine with it.
I hope that you can find what the problem is. Even if you little one is not ill, throwing up is still something gross to deal with, and not good for their digestive system.
God Bless!

I've never heard of anything like that but it deffinetly doesn't sound normal I think it's good that you are seeking a new doctor. I have heard of babies who spit up more then normal because of acid reflux. I believe this usually goes away as they get older. Maybe it is certain foods that irritate her and cause it. hope this helps in some way good luck.

Do not ignore this...my son is 3 yrs old and has vomited solids since 7 months...pediatricians said he'll grow out of it...he never did and has an extremely limited diet and has poor weight gain. He is extremely anxious when presented with food and falls apart behaviorally when sitting at a table...he has had blood work ups for allegies and celiac, video flouroscopic studies, sensory therapy etc...he is scheduled for an endoscopy to see if it is a medical issue...this test was requested by a GI specialist at Dupont...nothing else has helped this situation so this is our last resort...

dining out is an issue and snack time with peers is unpleasant also any food crafts result in temper tantrums (he is starting preschool this Sept)

Could be??? I can't remember the name of the condition, usually boys get it...but one of my girlfriends had it when she was little...it involves blockage of the part of the intestine that leaves the stomach, and requires surgery...I will have to ask my girlfriend what it is called and get back to you...
I agree, that is not something a doctor should brush off like that..

new foods don't make a child throw up. if she were to be experiencing a reaction to new foods, she'd be breaking out in rashes/hives not throwing up. good idea for finding a new doctor, in meantime search your insurance provider site for a gastroentologist, who would then run a few tests to see what's the problem. i hope your insurance allows you to do directly go to gastroentologist without having to get a referral. if you do need a referra, call your current ped. and ask them to fax/mail you a referral for a gastroentologist. he should at least be able to do that for you.
most ped's do not act on something unless you go in there many times. i hate that. so now, i don't even go twice, if i suspect something's wrong i go directly to the specialist.
good luck

Like the some of the other responses, I was going to suggest that your daughter may have reflux. All three of my children have suffered from it. Where you are you located?
