My sister has 2 1/2 yr old with they same sympton. She has always been gassy and tummy problems since newborn. Then she has gotten these bouts of throwing up for up to a week at a time. She just took her to a specialist because dr. said nothing wrong and luckily nothing wrong. They did upper and lower endoscopy, blood work, etc. It is probably anxiety. Maybe that is problem or allergies to milk or wheat. She had all the allergy tests done too!

My daughter is 22 months and we went through the same thing. It was so bad at first that she cried or coughd she would throw up. It was happening everyday. At one point it almost seemed like she could do it on command. Like you I was very concerned, my doctor told me the same thing, some kids just go through it. My oldest daughter never went through anything like this. Well needless to say she has out grown it and she is perfectly fine. It did not effect her in any way.

Could she be lactose intolerant? My daughter was the same way. We realized the problem and after switching to soy milk and reducing her milk products the vomiting stopped. Over the years we slowly introduced milk products back into her diet, and now, she's 13, she's fine as long as she doesn't over do it.

Has she been checked for Acid Reflux? It is very, very common and one of the indicators is throwing up. Also, she could have some intestial blockage or her intestines may not have formed correctly during birth.
If you feel that there is something wrong, please go to a specialist and ask for a second opinion. I hate to say it, but Doctors are very busy and they can't spot all the problems. As Moms we have to listen to our instincts and do what we feel is right for our kids.

Good luck!!!

Hi A..

Please, please, please take your daughter to a pediatric GI doctor. Insist on a referral if you health care plan requires one. Don't take "no" for an answer.

Both of my sons had the same symptoms you are describing. I had a good doctor who had them tested for GERD. I had never heard of it, but it ran in our family (thanks dad...)There is a good website GERD.com that would be a good resource if you think she might have it. Just a thought. Even now, if my boys sleep without a lot of height behind their heads, they will vomit. So, it is a life long thing for them. I hope you find a solution.

Please take your baby girl to the dotors again. I had a friend who had a baby that was doing the same thing and they(dotors)at Phoenix Childrens Hospital did a cat scan and found that she was having digestive problems and the the act of eating was making her throw up. You and your family will be in a our prayers.

I know this may sound like an odd question what is she eating? My son was doing something simular to that and we had to put him on AR by Enfimil. Its the only thing that kept him from vomiting every couple of days when eating or there after. It seemed odd to me but it worked. Just an Idea. Your baby may have a sensativity to what shes eating.

My son wasn't much of a spitter upper when he was young, but around 15-16 months, he was throwing up 2-3 times/week with no discernible pattern. He was going through a lot health wise - constant ear infections and we ended up getting tubes in his ears at 18 months. I guess the problem for him was related to his ears because I think he's only thrown up once since and we're pretty sure he had a stomach virus at the time. If you haven't checked out her ears and her balance, it may be worth a shot.

Sounds like she has reflux. My daughter was premature and would vomit all the time, I ended up putting on a thicker formula to help her keep it down. The Dr. said she would grow out of it when the muscle developed that prevents food from coming back up. She did but it wasn't until she was 3 years old. Contact me if you would like to talk more about it, I know it is frustrating.

I highly recommend going to a pediatric GI. I am pleased with ours, Dr. Nancy Yokois. My son also threw up a lot as a baby and it ended up being GERD, but there can be a lot of reasons.

I work at a hospital and I would be demanding that your PCP order the following tests: UGI, Esophagram, Modified Barium Swallow with a Speech Therepist.

PCP's usually order these tests for Vomiting as a diagnosis for adults. Good luck..... keep after your PCP and if they don't help see a specialist at a Childrens Hospital

A.,
My daughter is now almost 4 yrs old. She threw up as an infant and it carried into her later childhood. We took her to a specialist at Phoenix Children's Hospital and they put her on a powder form of Prevacid. It has healed her esophagus from the stomach acid and she throws up a lot less now. Our next step if the throwing up continues is to get her an endoscopy (which I'm trying desperately not to do) but the medicine seems to work. We found certain foods trigger this, ketchup being the worst and some juices with red in it. We did an allergy test on her, which I would highly recommend, and found out she was allergic to red dye and the vinegar in the ketchup also triggered her gastric reflexes. If you need any advice or just to talk about it, please don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck, P.

You might want to check with Dr. Krohn in Los Alamos, NM. She helped us alot when my son threw up for several years. He had many environmental and food allergies. Also the Environmental Health Clinic in Dallas. Good luck. R.

Hi A.,

I had the same problem with my now 2 year old son. I changed doctors and the new doctor had him tested for reflux (GERD) as soon as I told him what was going on. I also learned that the vomiting can cause damage to the throat. We put him on some medicine and he has stopped doing it. The other thing that they told me was to change the way you feed them. Small amounts with time in between. If you look on the internet there is tons of info on the subject.

PS: The test is not real fun. The have them drink a dye and then take X-Ray's of them while they are strapped to a board that they turn in all directions. More stress on mom then child.

My niece had projectile vomiting after every meal, for about 2 years. She gained weight etc, the dr. just said she had a sensitive stomach. As long as your Dr. says it is ok, I would trust him. Otherwise you might want to get a allergy test or something?

Hello A., I had the same problem with my oldest child. We were told eveything was fine but she kept losing weight and it scared me. She finally ended up in the hospital. A Dr. there had her eating without throwing up by giving her goat milk with a small amount of pure cane sugar in it. It was easier for her tummy to digest and she finally started to gain her weight back. She was only 3 months old at the time but it worked great for her. This formula was used until she was almost a year old. By that time her digestive system settled down and we put her on regular milk. I was told that most children grow out of digestive problem by the time they are 2 to 2 1/2 yrs old. Hopefully your daughter will too. Maybe changing her milk may help for now.

my friends son threw up from new born untill 8 mounths or so. during that time the mother had him checked out by 2 different doctors that said nothing was wrong. The 3rd doctor took pictures of the babys abdomon to find that most organs and heart was in different locations. A successful surgry was performed to put organs back where they belong. I was reading your note and made me think of my freinds situation, have you had 2nd and 3rd opions and ultrasonic photos?

My oldest daughter spent her first year throwing up regularly, the doctors had no clue why and thought she just had air bubbles in her tummy. At one point she through up blood and in a panic I took her to the ER. The doctor on duty said "shes allergic to milk". I immediately illuminated milk from her diet and she immediately stopped throwing up. When I took her back to her doctor for her check up, her doctor was surprised that it was that simple and recommended that she permanently drink soy milk.

My youngest son threw up after every meal when he was born. We searched everywhere for answers and no traditional doctors could help. I wanted the most non-invasive help I could get unless the doctors could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they had to be invasive.

Dr.'s said he has reflux, and suggested medicine. I said how do you know it's reflux and how to do we treat the cause. The Dr.'s said there is no way to treat the cause just use medicine to stop the results. I wouldn't accept that for my body, so I wouldn't accept that for my infant.

The Dr.'s wanted to do exploratory surgery to see what was going on. I wasn't doing that unless they could tell me why they needed to do that, they said it was a last resort, if needed.

All of this made me crazy, I had no idea who to trust. My last resource was an osteopath.
There we found success!

It turned out that the way my son was born had an impact on the nerves in his head and it was unnoticeable. The impact was there was pressure on a nerve that caused vomiting. It took 6 months of once a week treatments. The treatments were as gentle as a massage and he seemed to love it. We saw results after day one!

Find a local Osteopath who has had experience working with children, that is really important, and give it shot. It can't hurt!
Good Luck the Mommie Mentor

A.,

Is there any other pattern to the occurrence? What physical activities, foods, clothes etc are involved?

If she is very active after she eats, maybe you should have her sit and watch TV until she digests. If she wears certain outfits with elastic wait bands and it happens, try dresses or loose clothing. I would document all of these things and where she is in the house when ever it happens. I would look for a pattern and try to change just one thing in the pattern at a time.
