I suspect this one is fishing for a perverted answer.

You can go to Walmart and get a cheap pump for $15 to take the edge off and reduce engorgement so baby can latch. Then contact La Leche league and rent a nice Medela pump.

Hot wet washcloths will help soften her so that baby can latch on. She needs to pull baby's chin down with her thumb so his mouth opens wide and then "pop" baby onto her nipple so that most of the brown part is in baby's mouth - not just the nipple. If baby is just sucking on the nipple itself, it doesn't work well and will make her very sore.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Call your pediatrician! Most pediatricians have lactation consultants on staff to help with problems like this.

You need to invest in a breast pump.

Your wife is engorged. She will need to manually extract the milk. That means pumping her breasts with her hands if you don't have a pump.

Warm towels will help as well. You will NEED to get the milk out before your wife gets an abscess in her breasts which will hurt even more than the engorgement.

She needs to get on a schedule for nursing and if she has chosen to nurse on demand? She needs to pump every few hours to keep her milk up and have a supply on hand for you to bottle feed.

Good luck!! I hope the lactation consultant at your pediatrician can help you!!

Google the website Kellymom and look up "engorgement".
It will have all the information you need.

A hand pump is very inexpensive. Run to Target or Walmart and buy one.

Does your pediatricians office have a lactation consultant?
Give them a call.
Your wife is going to need to express some milk to relieve some pressure and then let the baby nurse often to keep things flowing and keep from getting over engorged again.

I found that a warm shower and hand expressing worked. I never used a pump.

When this happened to me I would take a nice hot shower and self extract enough to feel comfortable and then nurse right after.

hot shower and manual expression. and if that fails you can get a pump (manual or electric) at target or wqalmart for not too much money. i used the first years electric and it worked well at a decent price.
(a manual pump is about 20$ and will work to relieve the engorgement. )
i would also check out kelly mom . com to learn more about breastfeeding and manual pumping.

I had a crazy time learning to nurse my firstborn.

I'll spare you the gory details L.. I am just trying to imagine how bad it would have been in order for my husband to write a poorly constructed post on a parenting site as a cry for help. Yea, not going to happen.

If this is real SHE needs to call in a lactation consultant and rent or buy a pump immediately. She can get VERY sick, trust me.

Does the la Leche League still exist? they were there to help this type of situation among other things. Call the nurses on the maternity ward and ask if they have any suggestions, too.

You may be able to get a pump through health insurance though you may need your doctors referral first. I would call and see if they cover. They may be picky at what is covered but it would help.
