My 23 month old has stopped napping, but gets very tired and fussy late in the day and will fall asleep in the car if we go out. Should I try to enforce a nap or is this a normal transition out of naps?

This sounds like a typical transition out of napping, although a little early. The transition will be hard no matter what age they start. My best advice is to at least have some sort of quiet time, whether you make them just lay in their bed and "look" at books, or put on a little movie, or some quiet music for them. The main thing they need is a break from too much activity and stimulation. This should make those crabby evenings easier to deal with. I have two kids, 6 and 9 and it worked wonderful for both of them during their transition out of napping. If you make it a "choice" for them, napping or quiet time, chances are they'll pick quiet time, and sometimes will just fall asleep anyway! Good Luck!

Doesnt it always go that way, that they have no problem falling asleep in the car, its the motion, movement and the relaxation of their bodies...if only it were so easy to get them down for a regular nap.
Personally I think its still a bit early to cut out a nap, maybe try some quiet time, start with a short period of time and then gradually add more time. No TV or toys, maybe a book or two while laying in bed or on the couch.

I remmber my oldest went throug ha napping strike around 23 months. I just kept putting him down at his regular naptime just to rest, and within a few weeks he was back to sleeping normally again. :) Its a phase, just keep putting him down as you normally would so at least he gets some rest. GIve him an hour. I bet he'll start napping again in a few weeks.

That sounds really young! I would try to go until 4 years old if possible. If he/she gets fussy and tired they need a nap still. Also have them be real active before the nap, tire them out! It sounds like they are just testing the limits and let them know the expectation is still that you are having them take a nap. A friend of mine makes her daughter stay in her room for the full nap time and at least rest be quite and maybe read books! Hold your ground and do the naps you'll have a much more rested child.

When my daughter was a little over two she started doing the same thing. I was appalled because I thought I'd get a nap until kindergarten. I do heartily agree that children need a quiet time in the afternoon, whether it's a movie or books or sitting on the bed. I tried to enforce the nap with my daughter, but when she napped we couldn't get her down until almost midnight some nights. So my husband and I decided to pull the nap. It was very difficult to get her past the 6 o'clock hour, but we put her to bed early and she started sleeping 11 to 12 hours at night, more than her total with the nap. So, I never drove anywhere in the afternoon if I could avoid it and usually gave her a bath at night to help keep her awake so I wasn't putting her to bed at 5pm. She still has quiet time in the afternoon.
That said, your child may just be on a napping strike and it may resume shortly. I have plenty of friends whose kids nap until kindergarten.

That's a pretty good sign he still needs a nap. I would try and get him to take atleast a little nap or a rest quiet period maybe a hour a day.

My almost 6 year old falls asleep all the time in the car and it's because were so busy and she's not getting enough sleep. That's my number one sign to slow things down or put her to bed earlier.

Usually at daycare's they will enforce nap time til about 4 years old, so it's very typical for a 2 year old to take a 2 hour nap every day.

I have everyone kindergarten and younger nap. They have to at least be quiet on their mats. You can't force a child to sleep, but often they get back into the habit.
