Does anyone have a recipe for edible play dough? My 2 year old is starting to play with it at school, but the actual "Play-Doh". It is not safe to eat and I would like to find a recipe that could be edible if I need to take my eyes off him for a minute to tend to my 4 month old.

Look for a book called the Ultimate Book of Kids Concoctions. It has tons of safe recipes for making play doh, edible finger paints, lip gloss, goo, and fun crafts you make from stuff around the house. I got the books at Garden Ridge.

I got this receipe from my daughter's pre K teacher.

3 cups Flour
3 cups salt
1 1/2 cups water

mix together add food color if you want different colors. She put each others kids playdough in a baggy and they got to add the food coloring themselves and see it change color while they mixed it in the baggy.

Have fun! :)

Hi K.,
Regular Play Doh is non-toxic- so I wouldn't be overly concerned about him eating it. It does cause techni-color poop :-)
Here is a recipe:

Kool Aid Play Doh
1/2 Cup Salt
2 Cups flour
3 Tbsp oil
1 small packet unsweetened Kool aid
Add 1 Cup boiling water
Stir together until smooth- kneading w/ hands as necessary. Let Cool. Store in plastic baggie.

K. - would take aLOT of playdough to hurt him....my son is 2 and has learned to play eat - NOT really eat...it doesn't take long - I'm on my last 2 of 4 children and it's the stuff you don't see them eat that's worse....

I cannot find the recipe. I just searched online and found a recipe with mazipan. If you don't want to make it, you can get it pre-made. I found it at Michaels.com. You can go to the kids tab and go down to edible crafts it is called Kandy Clay. They can strethch it shape or eat it.It comes in 6 different colors and flavors. Its made by Wilton who makes frosting.

I haven't tried it yet I just found it online this last weekend, and thought it would be good since I have 3 toddler and a 18 mo old who wants to eat everything.

Edible Craft Dough Cookies

Yield: 66 Servings
1 c Butter or margarine; softened
1 c Shortening
2 ½ c Sifted powdered sugar
6 Hard-cooked egg yolks; mashed
2 ts Baking soda
2 ts Cream of tartar
1 tb Vanilla extract
5 c All-purpose flour
Paste food coloring --red & yellow & green

Cream butter and shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add egg yolks, soda, cream of tartar, and vanilla, beating well. Gradually add flour, mixing well. Divide dough into 4 equal portions. Color one portion red, one yellow, one green, and leave remaining dough plain. Wrap each separately in plastic wrap, and chill at least 1 hour. Hand shape cookies into desired designs, or roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface and cut with 2 1/2-inch cookie cutters. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheets 1 to 2 minutes; remove to wire racks and cool completely. Yield: about 5 1/2 dozen.
