Need Advice About My Son's Daycare.

The other day my 14 month old was injuried at daycare. They had him in a walker, and he got his thumb stuck in a hole in the walker. It pulled the skin off, and it looks really bad. That night he would hold up his thumb and just cry and cry. I know that things are going to happen, but I was mad because they didn't call us about it or write up an accident report. He has been bitten twice and scratched once by another child, and all 3 times they have written up a report. My husband told them that we don't want him in the walker anymore. There is really no sense in him being put in there because he can walk just fine. I'm just wondered if I should do anything else or just let it go. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would have concerns about leaving him in that daycare. I am a former childcare provider myself, and EVERY incident, regardless of how serious, has to be documented. If that was the only problem, and since you know that they have done accident reports before, I would let it go. However, the fact that he was in a walker at all is the part that sounds wrong to me. Many places do not allow them for any age. And since your son is 14 months and walking by himself, the childcare facility should be encouraging him to keep moving forward in his gross motor abilities. They should not be putting him in reverse! I think I would start asking around for recommendations of good childcares in your area. Best wishes to you.

you pay these people to keep your som happy and safe. If they don't do their job, they don't keep their job. Your child is too important to give them multiple chance. There are other daycares out there who can and will do a better job.

I absolutely agree with Jennifer M. You are right, things happen between children (bites, scratches, etc.), but if your child can walk he should not be in a walker. They are most likely using it for their own convenience.

They are supposed to write up accident reports when ANY accident happens, but they may not have wanted this in their file. It shows negligence on their part. I would, at minimum, insist that they write up a report. You need to keep the copy in case your sons injury gets worse.

I would be looking for another care center in the meanwhile. I know this is difficult, but I would consider it necessary.

So often we know the answer before we ask the question. So from reading your post I would seriously consider changing day care. You appear to be uncomfortable with the center and that is enough reason for a change. Listen to the little voice, its rarely every wrong.

Definitely mention it to the teacher or director and show them the injury. Calmly remind them that you could like an accident report when things like this happen- basically, so you don't get too worried. If it continues to be a problem, I would look into other daycare providers.

Keep in mind, this is only my own opinion. Before I'd take any child back to that daycare, I would insist on a report being written up, I'd have the injury examined by the child's doctor, and I would be making the daycare pay for any expenses.
Needless to say, I'd be searching for a different daycare provider, and if necessary, I'd rather stay home even if it was financially difficult rather than take a baby back to that place. It sounds like a second rate operation, and that there is negligence on their part.
If you must work, get the best daycare you can. I know it's a big chunk our of your income, but it's your baby's well being that comes first and foremost. Is there a trusted friend or relative that could watch your son while you seek out a better daycare situation?
Best of luck to you and I hope your little darling's booboo heals quickly!

I agree, if your child can walk there is NO reason for him to be in a walker! AS for no incident report, that is just wrong. As a provider myself, I even write up one if the child tripps over their own feet and gets a bump on the head. Parents need to know what is going on at the time that something happens. Sometimes big daycares have too many children with one person and things slip by without being seen. That's why I chose to open a home day care. I would let it go for now, make sure he's not in the walker anymore and moaybe even the walker gone if there is a whole in it. If something happens again I would look elsewhere.
