Need Help- Don't Know Where to Start

My 3 year old ds seems to snore a lot at night. At times we think we have heard him kinda gasp for breath. He has never been very good with sleeping. His ped thinks his adenoids may be too large. She has recommended we go to an ENT and get a face X-ray done. Any moms out there been through all this? He typically does not get too many ear infections. I am not sure where to start. I am not for too much medications etc. Would not an X-Ray of the face be too much for him to handle? Is there no easier way to diagnose if there is sleep apnea or large adenoids? Can homeopathy / chiropractice etc help?

What can I do next?

My son snores a lot as well! Its every night and I was thinking the same thing. We are taking my little girl to get her tonsils removed in May but she didnt have a snoring problem she just has really huge tonsils that are causing issues for her breathing at night. Let me know how everything goes and if you find out something that really could help with the snoring! My baby boy is 3 as well.

Our three year old had very large adnoids and tonsils. Dr. Michael Bryan in Southlake took excellent care of him. We have taken all three of our kiddos there and are very happy with all the care they have recieved. In total we've had 4 sets of tubes, 3 adnoidectomies and 1 set of tonsils removed. Dr.Bryan is very conservative and did not recommend invasive procedures until we had tried everything else.

Hi A., My 4 & 1/2 yr. old grandson has always snored & had sleep apnea from birth. When he was 19 months old we had his adnoids removed and sorry to say it didn't help. I have talk to a lot of people that say it didn't help their little ones either. Just pray about it and I know you will make the right descission. As far as the xray goes, that's the easy part. It only takes a few min., the sleep test is what isn't fun. they usually have to wear a sleep mask that looks a bit like a gas mask with wires coming out of it. I truly didn't mean to paint you a horror story just being honest. Just use your faith and talk with your doctor. God bless you all.

My 4yr old daughter snores like a man sometimes, we have taken her to an ENT and she is having her tonsils and adnoids out at the end of this month. She has a slight case of sleep apnea and the dr said that it should all correct itself when we get this done. We are using Dr. Stewart in Arlington. I had my tonsils and adnoids removed last may and it was awful as an adult so I'm glad that we caught this now and are getting it done. Dr. Stewart was great with her he talked to her about what was going to happen and she was very comfortable with him.

My son is getting his adenoids out tomorrow. He's been on a steroid nose spray so far to keep them in check. He, too, seemed to have sleep apnea before we started the meds.

The dr. checked his adenoids by sticking a tube down his nose to look at the size of his adenoids. Not fun for my son (or me who was holding him!) but it may have been easier than trying to keep him still for an x-ray.

Good luck!

I haven't dealt with exactly what you are describing but we have had to go to an ent and have xrays for other medical issues. I've found it's helpful to make a list of questions before going in because I can never remember them all on the spot. Make sure to ask about everything and share any concerns you might have.

If you decide to xray, find out all the details as to how they actually do it. Then the day before the xrays, tell your little one about it. Use a doll or stuffed animal to represent your child and use other stuff to represent the bed and machines. Then do the pretend xray on the toy. Do this as many or as few times as he needs. Do it again at night and then before you leave. Make sure you are explaining that this Is what is going to happen to him. Don't do it sooner than a day before otherwise it's too much stress for them. If you do the surgery, do the same thing with that an be sure to give the toy an iv and have it go to sleep. Then have it wake up,etc.

Play therapy helps tremendously with little kids. Talk about all the steps, role play, etc. Then try to give them as many choices as they can have when going through it so that they don't feel forced and like everything is beyond their control. Stand up for them if you feel like a nurse or doctor is being too pushy. We get lots of experience with this type of thing due to my daughters illness. No fun. But I promise you that these things listed above will help your son understand more and not be so frightened.

A.,

My son had snoring and apnea-ish tendencies too. He also didn't talk much even at two, so we saw an ENT...Dr. Alan Murray (Pediatric ENT in Coppell). Anyway...we had tubes put in his ears which helped him hear and he started talking in no time. But we waited on the adenoids because our doc wanted to rule out allergies as the cause. So we ran a panel of allergy tests on him and he had none. The next summer we had his adenoids out and he is a quiet sleeper now. It is amazing how much it has helped him (and he is less congested and sick...which means less ear infections too). Hope this helps!!!
