Need Help for My Bi-racial Daughter's Hair

Hi. My daughter has beautiful curly hair. The issue is that when I fix it in the morning it is heavily tangled. I have tried just about every detangler on the market. I use a shampoo and conditioner that has detangler, too. The texture of her hair is like mine, but it is super curly with smaller ringlets. I don't want to keep hearing her cry. Does anyone have suggestions on a product that works and doesn't make her hair greasy?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. It really helped hearing all the different suggestions. I have started to braid her hair at night and use more conditioner/moisturizer in her hair. It's helped!

HI K.,

I am sorry to hear about your struggles with your daugter's hair. I am Biracial too and I CAN relate to her. Oh how I remember those tears when my mom combed my hair:) There is hope. AS an adult, I have been VERY blessed to find an amazing stylist. His name is Marcell Smith ###-###-#### that is the salon number where he works down town.

He has taught me a lot about hair and I have seen AMAZING results with my hair. For years. I struggled trying every product on the market and FINALLY the best I have encountered is a product that he intoduced me to called Biostrand www.biostrand.com IT is WONDERFUL and vey gentle. Not greasy at all. I have used it for over 7 years.

In fact, I had to learn about my hair needing moisture and NOT a bunch of grease. He taught me the importance of maintaining proper moisture balance within your hair. I was so excited about my own hair success I could not wait until I had my baby. I am a mom of a 13-month old and I have used the products on her since day 1. It is gentle on her hair and skin and I love it for my baby!

The main 2 products you can get are Clinsme-(shampoo) and Phorme (a light daily mositurizer) that you lightly mist in her hair. I think the suggestions of others are also good, in terms of braiding her hair at night to make the morning easier. But I think you will also find as I did that you get better results from the hair when you are NOT using a shampoo that has a high Ph level which drys the hair out and just causes more tangles & in worse cases breakage.

I hope this info. was helpful. Unfortunately, this is NOT a product sold in local stores. You have to buy it at a salon or online. It is not cheap, but it lasts long and Trust me it is worth it for less frustration for you and your daughter.

Feel free to call the salon to ask more specific questions. The salon is downtown and they sell the product there too. Marcell is wonderful and loves to help and believes in healthy hair for everyone! I know he will answer your questions, you can even tell him I told you about the product.

Take care....M.

Hi K.,

Main and Tail makes a (detangling) conditioner that is excellent, you can put it onto the hair and then start combing the hair from the bottom of the hair up to the scalp while holding the pieces your are combing in your hand. It helps your daughters hair to detangle and it will not pull on her scalp because you are holding the hair while combing/brushing! Hope this helps.

Have you considered having her hair braided? It would not only save you time, but you would not have to worry about combing her hair for several weeks. Check some of your local black stylists if you don't know one. They should not charge much since she is so young.
I had my daughter's hair braided and she looked adorable.

Well I have curly soft hair and I wear twist but before I wash it I have to comb it out so I put moisturizer on and it combs out no pain. It can be used everyday also. the product is by Soft and Beauitiful called Botanicals it is a lite creme mositurizer, it comes in a tube and its not greasy. I think this will be perfect for your daugher's hair.

My biracial daughter also has very long and curly hair, with beautiful natural ringlets. For years the detangling was awful, but i have learned a few things:

1. Always sleep in one or two braids or ponytails

2. Only comb wet hair - In the bath (every three days at the most), I shampoo my curly-headed kids with moisturizing shampoo, then work in a healthy amount of moisturizing conditioner that you can leave in and then comb through the tangles. Then i let their hair air dry (or use a cool hair dryer in the winter) and they get beautiful ringlets. Then don't TOUCH THEM!!

3. In the morning, if hair gets frizzy around the hairline, I apply a light kids mousse and that takes away the frizz. Our mousse is called Little Sprouts Children's Miracle Mousse - see link to a curly girls website that i just found.....FUN... http://www.curlmart.com/Little-Sprout-Childrens-Miracle-M...)

Tell her to enjoy it. People pay tons for curly hair like that. My daughter gets MILLIONS of compliments!

My daughter got my naturally curly hair. She gets lots of tangles and I braid her hair when it is wet before bed. I also use the Paul Mitchell Conditioner on the days that the tangles are really bad.

I would also suggest a hair cut. I've noticed that when Emily gets hers cut the tangles aren't as bad.

Good Luck

Do you leave her hair loose while she sleeps? I would recommend putting it up into a ponytail. My daughter's hair is curly, and that seemed to help, we definitely see the difference if it's left down. Maybe you could even braid it after it is up for even less tangles. Also, I use a leave in conditioner on my daughter's hair and that has helped with the frizz and tangles.

As an interacial woman and hairstylist if you're having problems with tangling due to curliness the only permanent solution would be to get their hair straightened which I wouldnt suggest. Just for Me and Mizani for kids both have excellent product lines for detangling and moisturizing that you may wanna check out.

Hi K.,
I have 2 boys (biracial) and my youngest has the same type of hair that you described for your daughter. I have the same issue. We keep his hair longer, so I understand your not wanting to hear her scream. He has my texture, but beautiful, perfect little ringlets (that my husband keeps threatning to cut off!).

We use a good shampoo and conditioner, but in the morning when I style it, I use a small amount of water in a spray bottle to dampen his hair and then a dollop of of "olive oil organic root stimulator" Its in a green bottle and you can find it in the "ethnic hair" section of Target/Walmart/Walgreens.

The bottle says "incredibly rich oil moisturizing hair lotion. It does not leave the hair greasy (be sure only to use a little bit....maybe the size of a nickle or smaller, maybe a dime), rub in into your hands first and then rub it into her hair. It comes in a bottle or a tub. I have found that in the bottle is less greasy.

I hope this helps.

The only time you need to actually comb her hair is when the conditioner is in it while you're washing it. Otherwise you should just use a light styling cream (frizz ease makes a great one) to eliminate the frizzies in the mornings... that's it.
I have very curly hair and remember my mother (straight hair) nearly killing me trying to brush and comb my hair all the time. Not necessary! Curly hair doesn't need to be combed and brushed like that. If you are using a good conditioner when washing, you shouldn't need to use a detangler at all. Just comb through while the conditioner is still on her hair. And if you wash every 3 days, it should be fine. That's what I do...

Buy the olive oil organic root stimulator that Beth suggested. I pick it up at Walmart. After conditioning her hair, apply a small amount to damp hair and let air dry. The curls will really shine through and it won't look greasy. Don't comb or pick after that or you will get frizz instead of ringlets. Scrunch her hair as you are rubbing in the olive oil stuff in. I like the way it smells too. =)

Is it long enough to put in braids at night? Or a ponytail?

Take her to one of her aunts, grandmother, cousins,or get a consultation at a hair salon that specializes in african-american hair. There are alot of products out here. Also, try a beauty supply house and ask for assistance. They have beautitians that own these stores.
