NEED Help Getting the Smell and Stains Out of Carpet.......

I had been smelling some odor in my room for the past couple days. After thinking I cleaned the kids potty good enough I still smelled it. I looked under the potty and OMG it was leaking. I had no idea it was leaking. I just never thought about looking completely under. Anyways I am throwing that thing....maybe the more expensive potties arent the best. Anyways now I am left with a horrible smelling carpet. I am trying to save the hassel of completely changing the carpet since my budget is very very low. Also what is a good carpet stain remover? I figured I would try a couple throughout time but that just seemed stupid because I would much rather just look for one PERIOD. Any suggestions? And the stains are pretty bad. I dont mind scrubbing it seems more reasonable to scrub the stain out as opposed to just letting the foam sit and the stain is supposed to dissappear. Anyways enough of me rambling. Thank You in advance everyone.

What can I do next?

As our beloved dog has gotten older her bladder control is going... and it REEKS!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Chem-Dry carpet cleaner. You sprinkle the stuff on, brush it in and wait 30-60 minutes, then vacuum. There have been a couple of times it has taken 2 applications, but it gets out the stain and the smell. We use it in our Pedi office for vomit and other accidents!
You can buy a huge box at Home Depot.

I agree that what you need is an enzymatic cleaner that will literally eat away the cause of the smell. The two listed by the previous poster are good, as is Odo-Ban. It's good for your laundry, too. I get it at Sam's, but I'm sure it's other places, too.

I would recommend spraying it on (whichever one you buy) and let it sit over night. Then spray some more (or some water... something to wet it lightly again) and use a carpet cleaner on it. You can rent a Rug Doctor (the best for pulling out liquids) or buy a Bissell spot-bot. It's kinda expensive (about $100) but we've used it so many times to clean things up from the carpet, it's paid for itself (if you consider that we would have had to rent something all those times). You want to buy the one from Target, not the one at Walmart... they look the same, but the model number is slightly different and the one from Walmart has a less powerful motor (I did my research before I bought mine). It costs $10 more at Target, but the stronger motor is worth it.

You want to get your carpet really dry and a strong motor is important for that. Also, repeatedly spraying it very lightly with the enzymatic cleaner is better than trying to soak it. If you get the pad below the carpet too wet, it's too hard to dry and you might introduce a mildew problem in place your current issue.

Best of luck!

I wouldn't use the Oxy Clean or the other one.... use something with an enzyme that eats the bacteria that makes the smells. Like Nature's Miracle or Petzyme. You can get them at Pet Smart or Pet Land. I know this isn't a pet mess, but it's kind of the same thing. Petzyme (and I may not be spelling it correctly) works wonders. You'll be amazed.

Without a doubt use Folex. You can get it at Target near all the other carpet cleaners. It's in a white bottle w/ brown lettering.

OR you can rent a steam/carpet cleaner hourly at Walmart. It's only about 16.00 for half a day.

For the smell I've heard that you should soak the spot in cider vinegar and clean with steam cleaner.

Here is post from a lady on another site that sounds interesting:

"For urine spots and smells: 1/2 cup white vineger and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide. 2 or 3 drops of dishwashing liquid.
Use just enough to cover the spot, let sit 10 -15 minutes. Blot with old towel or carpet steamer. If spot is fresh soak up urine first.
I use a pet and odor shampoo in my steam cleaner and 1/4 - 1/2 cup of white vinegar, (amount depends on how bad the smell is) and almost boiling water."

You'll probably need something more than a spray or store bought carpet cleaner to really do a good job, but for starters I'd use Oxy-Clean. There are directions on the container for how to mix it for carpet cleaning. That should at least make a dent in the stain -- we've removed all sorts of stains with that stuff. After that, get it professionally cleaned because it's likely gone through to your carpet pad. I would avoid steam cleaning and go for dry-cleaning the carpet. Our dog got sick (diarrhea) all over the carpet once and we dry cleaned it with a friend's Kirby and it worked wonderfully. You may be able to rent a Kirby from a local dealer.
