Need Help with Static-y Hair!

When my hair was longer and staticy (I like that word lol) I use to wash my hair then rinse it with vinegar water. It made my hair really soft and didn't have the static. I also use vinegar as a fabric softner in my washer. Then when I dry the clothes, I don't get static. Hope this helps

i agree with the dryer sheets. i do this in the winter when i wear hats. hair always gets static when take hat off. just rub it through your hair. i also like the smoothing milk cream for your hair. garnier fructis has one that is pretty inexpensive.

I found a salon near me that sells it and bought some after a stylist in Denver introduced it to me. What I love and now use daily is The Original Morrocanoil Treatment. I tried the stuff for curly hair and it was too heavy.

If you don't want to pay that much ask the salon to give you a sample.

You may have gotten these ideas before, but I have horrible static problems too. I seem to have found a combination that helps though. Years ago, I asked my hair stylist, and she said when I wash my hair, to rinse it with luke warm or cold water. That's not the best part of my shower, and maybe I'm making it up, but it seems like I have less static when I rinse with cool water than hot. The 2nd thing I started doing is putting some light styling gel in my hair when I get out of the shower. I don't blow dry or anything - just run the gel through my wet hair and then let it air dry. Again, when I don't do that, it seems like I have more static. And then for moment-to-moment fixes, I'll put a little lotion in my hands, rub it into my hands until they're almost dry, and then just pat my hair (not the top of my head, just the hair that hangs). I'm not rubbing lotion into my hair, just kinda touching it with a little bit. I hope that makes sense? Anyway, good luck, and I'm going to read the rest of your responses for more tricks!

My mom used to mix liquid fabric softener with water in a spray bottle and mist a little onto my hair when it was static-y (yeah -- is that even a word?!) like that. Or spray a little onto your hairbrush. I wear my hair very short now, so it's not such a problem anymore.

Try this unusual fix...
The actual problem is the static not really your hair. Try to put liquid Downy and water (50/50) in a spray bottle and lightly spray your carpets and furniture. This has worked for myself and my 2 girls. I hope it can help you too.

forgot to check the responses, but I use Static Guard. You can spray that in your hairbrush, hair or carpet too. It is found on the laundry aisle USUALLY:)

It isn't necessarily your hair or products. You may need a humidifier in your house. We have used one for 20 years. It is a Bemis and holds 8 gallons of water, has a filter and put moisture into the air constantly. If it is too much, it shuts off automatically. It cost us about 100. I finally talked my daughter into buying one and it stopped her sons nose bleeds in winter and dry couphing. When the a/c is turned back on, we clean it, store it in the attic or a closet and bring it out again next fall. Both of us keep it in the kitchen but a central part of the house where air flows is good, like near a return vent or anywhere.

Honestly, I put about a dime-size bit of hand lotion in my hair while it's still wet from the shower. I just smear it all over my hands, then run my hands through my hair. My hair doesn't look greasy when I do this either. Of course, everyone is different, so what works for me, may not work for you. Longer hair, use a little more... Shorter hair, use a little less. My hair is just below my shoulders. Good luck!!!

You can use a dryer sheet and rub it on your hair..that does help some. I have staticy hair and it is so annoying. This helps a little!

try Bounce dryer sheets...they work very well

My hair is crazy staticy as well! I take a dryer sheet and and smooth it over my hair. Hold your hair in a pony tail in the back and pull the dryer sheet down. It works really good...your hair might smell like a dryer sheet though! =)

I am a hairdresser and I get this question a lot. One thing that works for me is to put After Party in the hair when it is damp. Its made by TIGI. Depending on how dense your hair is, will depend on the amount you will use. For thick hair use 1 to 2 full pumps of after party, rubbed though hands and applied to ends first, then the middle of hair shaft. Try to not get much at root area or you will be left with greasy hair. If you have fine hair use 1/2 to 1 full pump applied in the same manner as above. You can also use a slight amount when hair is dry but not very much cause it will go along way. and never apply directly from bottle to hair, always rub in hands before applying to hair.
Another thing you can try is to use a fabric sheet and rub over your head or brush, or use a light working hairspray, and apply to a brush, not a comb. And then run through your hair.

I've used Static Guard my whole life in the winter. Spray it on your brush (not directly on your hair), works like magic! On clothes too!

Yes you can use static guard in your hair per the bottle but it did not help for long at all......I am using a leave in conditioner in my girls' hair and that helped more than bio-silk (which I love and use for getting the tangles out)....haven't tried the dryer sheets but will.....

a product called after party made by bed head. seems to work really well on my hair.

it smells really good too!!

My daughter and I have the same problem! I have found that getting Static Guard and spraying it lightly on my comb/brush helps ALOT! You can find it in the laudry detergent isle (i think) Or when all else fails...we rub a dryer sheet on our hair :)

I have light fly away hair that I swear sometimes acts more like feathers! If I put conditioner on it it looks oily. The best thing I found is the Sauve Volumizer that is a spray gel (purple bottle) found at that most expensive place..Walmart for about $2 a bottle (worth a try). Comb through it after you put it on and you will be set for the day.

you might try a little hair spray, don't just spray the top, "fan" your hair as you spray.

I'm with ya! It's driving me crazy. I, too wear my hair natural. I might blow-dry it for Church, but that's about it. Also, I've noticed that a LOT of our little girls at school are having issues with static... we all look like we we are in the Science Museum with our hands on the static ball... LOL. Must be the atmosphere. Someone was carrying around a can of Static-guard the other day. Can you use that stuff on hair???

A little hairspray usually does the trick, you could even carry a trial size with you in your purse. A leave in conditioner might help too.

Spray hairspray IN YOUR HANDS(like a small pool of it and lightly rub your hands together and smooth it over your hair. Its works. I dont use any products,they never work,lol..but you have to eliminate the static in your house as well,this will help too~to eliminate statict in your house...take a spray bottle and fill alil more then half with water and other with FABRIC SOFTNER..light spray all your carpets,area rugs..etc....it def helps!:)(and your house smells good too!!)...

Dryer sheets..just take one and lightly smooth it over your hair..or you can try bio silk..or a generic form of it..also some pomades will work too..but personally i use the dryer sheets..i just keep one in my pocket or purse and every once in a while go into the restroom and do it again

I used to have the same problem. But I would switch to a much heavier conditioner- more moisture one. Or get a spray in conditioner you can use in the morning. The best way though is to spray static guard on your brush then brush your hair. The only thing is then your hair smells like static guard...but hey those fly aways are tame! Good luck though :)
