Hi Mama's:

I found out last nite that my husband has planned a vacation for the end of January. I am super-excited until I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror while changing. I need to tone up fast! Is a month long enough to make a difference. I am not good at following a diet, I would rather exercise more but I am up for anything. Please help!

What can I do next?

Try the Jillian Michaels dvd 30 Day Shred. It's only 20 min a day but you can do more or add on some running if you want, and there's 3 levels so you can work harder too. I got it last year when our basement was getting finished and I couldn't run on my treadmill, she kicked my butt and my abs never looked better! Good luck and have a great time!

RUN. When I trained for my last marathon, after one month I saw a huge difference. The first month my trainer had me doing hill repeats and lots of lunges. That works fast on legs. Add some arm weights too. A typical schedule was to do hills and lunges and track work on Tuesdays. Run 8 miles on Thursday and 10 or more on Saturday.
I started out totally out of shape and was surprised how easy I worked up to running 20 miles.

Find a boot camp at a local gym! They work wonders!! It worked for me, but be prepared to work your butt off. Mark it on your calendar so you don't plan anything else during that time. Good luck!

Hi T.,

I agree with the other 2 posters. Running is good. If you hate it as I do, then the stair stepper is great. It'll firm up your butt/legs while burning calories. When all else fails--buy a good swimsuit cover! ;) I'm sure you won't need it though. Enjoy your vacay!

Hi T.! What worked for me was a program called Slim In 6. It's a six week program, but if you follow the program as directed you will definitely noticed results within 4 weeks. It's usually on informercials on TV, but it really works. I started this program shortly after I gave birth to twin boys and it worked marvelously. I also took supplements as well, which further accelerated my tone down. I was so lean and tone that people that knew me started asking me what I was doing. I did adjust my diet as well, but only moderately. I cut back on the typical foods that can make it hard for me to lose weight such as candy, deserts and other junk food. Plus, I drank lots of water. I was very pleased with the results and it is definitely a program that I recommend if you only have short period of time to work with. You can order it from beachbody.com. Best wishes and have a wonderful time on your trip! :-)

cardio is great but if you want to tone up you need to use those muscles. Push ups are great - they will tone your arms, chest and back, lunges, squats, sit-ups etc. All of these can be done at home. Also, I know you said you are not big on dieting, but if even for 2 weeks before your trip you cut out as much bread/pasta as you can and focus on fruits and veggies (also cut out alcohol especially beer) you will be amazed at how mush water weight you can lose and how less bloated you are (even if you don't feel bloated now). Good luck and have a great trip!!

The elliptical trainer gives a nice sleek look to the legs and makes the butt round. You would have to do it about 1-2 hours per day 3-4 days per week between now and then to make much of a difference. I did it 2 hours per day for 6 weeks once and dropped 4 sizes. I was in PAIN by the end though LOL. My husband changed jobs and then I couldn't get to the gym. I'd love to do it again if I had the way to pay for or get to a gym.

T........RUN....walk, run, walk..and LOTS of fluids (you can do it indoors, a track in some recreation center???)..Do you have stairs? use them and exercise on them in a routine of running up and down 3 times every set during the day..Don't get crazy, just start slowly the first days if you have not worked for a long time. You don't want to be injured.
Good Luck and enjoy your vacation!

Running is hands down the best fat burning exercise. If you are not an avid runner, I would suggest starting on a treadmill and walking 3 minutes, running 4, or walking 5, running 3, something like that, alternating for a few days. Try to go as long as you can alternating like this. An hour or more is best. Work up until you can run solid for about 20-30 minutes. If you can run no less than 20-30 minutes per day for the next month, you will notice fat disappearing.

Also, right after the run (or before if you prefer), do weights. I do these at home in the comfort of my own living room. I use 5lb weights and do TONS of reps. Google toning exercises and you will find what you need for the areas you want to target.

Pilates is also wonderful for toning, so maybe throw in some videos three times a week after running and weights every day.

Best of luck and have a great vacation!
