Needing a Double Stroller...

Hi!
I'm thinking of purchasing a double stroller to accomodate my two children...ages 2 and 4 months. However, I'm wondering if this purchase would be worth it since my oldest is 2 years old. At what age do children stop riding in strollers? The strollers' I've seen have small seats in the front (which I assume are for the older kids, since the back seat is the one that would hold the baby/car seat. Is this correct? Just wanted to get some input from other moms that have children around 20 months apart. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My two older girls are 20 months apart and we got a double stroller (Graco duoglider) when the younger one was born. I loved it and used it for quite a while - we put the older one in the front at first and then in the back. We used it again when my 3rd baby was born last winter, even though the next oldest was 3. It was so handy for winter coats and diaper bag while at the mall and I love it because it steers almost as well as a single stroller and I don't have any trouble maneuvering it at all. Plus I could pop the 3-year-old in it if I needed to.

Good luck!

Hi E.,
I got a double stroller from my adoptive mom when I had my second child. The nice thing about it was, it was stadium seating. So the back seat was higher up then the front. I put my son (the baby) in the front seat with his car seat. (I found out that any car seat fits with this stroller). Then I put my daughter who was two and an half at the time, in the back seat. And it folded up so nicely. Took up the same space as a single seat strooler would. I hope that you find something that will work for you. I forget the name at the moment but when I get the chance I will get the name of it. Take care!!

E.: I would say yes if you use strollers a lot. I got one for my three kids (3 1/2, 2 and 3 months). Sometimes oldest wants to ride in the stroller when we take walks. I would check craigs list or second hand stores for used ones. I got a really nice graco at a garage sale for $30. If you don't plan on using the stroller a lot then I would say no.

I just had my second child in the spring and I stressed about getting a double stroller. We checked them out online and in the stores, and decided they were way too expensive for something we weren't sure we would get a lot of use out of. So ... we went to garage sales and found two for around $40-$50 each. We kept one and sent the other to Grandma's house. I'm glad we did it this way, because my two-year-old does not always want to sit in the stroller. So the only time I really use it is when I'm by myself with the kids at the mall.

Hi, I also have a 2yr old and a six month old and I bought a double stroller when my second was born and I am sooo glad that I bought it second hand. My daughter has rode in it maybe 4 times. She doesn't like being in a stroller anymore and its too much of a struggle that isn't worth while. I always end up using my single stroller and I take my baby sling thingy that way if I have to I can put my son in that and my daughter can ride in the stroller. Rarely happens because she wants to walk like a big girl.

I would buy a double stroller even if I only had 1 child. They come in very handy at the store and family functions. There is not a lot of room to keep bags and diaper bags and their toys to keep them occupied etc.. on those single strollers. I say go for the double and buy a small umbrella stoller for those short run in trips or walks.

If you don't want to spend a lot on a stroller, consider looking on www.craigslist.com They have listings for all kinds of baby items that people are trying to sell. Some are used and some things are brand new. I have an Evenflo double stroller that I love and it was only $90 new at Wal-mart. I think that you can use them for quite awhile, maybe around 4. Good luck!

My sister-in-law (mother of 4) told me when I had my first, that if we had another she highly recommended the sin-n-stand double stroller. We now have #2 on the way and are planning to purchase it. My husband at first told me I was crazy, but when I explained it to him, he loved the idea. The one I am looking at has 2 regular seats like the standard double stroller, but the rear seat removes revealing a platform for an older child to stand on, or they can turn around and sit on the little seat. Seems like it will be perfect, but haven't used it yet as #2 isn't here yet! Good luck to you!

My son is 3 1/2 and my daughter is 4 months. I bought a double stroller and ended up selling it. It was big and very hard to handle in the stores. I sold mine on eBay. That would be a could place to look for one being sold for pick up only in your area or a Mom2Mom sale in your area. I have a girlfriend who coudln't live without hers, and I couldn't live with it. I guess it's just a matter of opinion and how much your going to use it and where. They re-sale very well, so not matter if you buy a used or new one, you can always get your money back out of it in the end.
Good Luck!!

Hi E.,
I bought a double stroller when I had my daughter and my son had just turned 2. Personally, I wish I would have bought a sit n' stand stroller instead. The front seat on a double stroller is pretty small and my son was too large for it. He is on the big side to begin with though (always in the 95th+ percentile for height). If your oldest son fits comfortably in the front seat with lots of growing room, go for the double. If there isn't much room to grow, you should consider a sit n' stand. They can accomodate 2 kids sitting or 1 child sitting and the other standing. Good luck!

I GUESS IT WOULD DEPEND ON YOUR 2 YEAR OLD. WHEN I HAD MY NEWBORN MY SON WAS 2 & 1/2ISH. MY SISTER-IN-LAW GAVE ME A DOUBLE STROLLER, I USED IT ONCE. IT WAS HARD TO MOVE AROUND AND I COULDN'T FIT THE CAR SEAT IN IT,(THEY WERE THE SAME BRAND). I FOUND IT EASIER TO LET ME OLDER SON WALK OR USE THE STROLLER FOR THE OLDER ONE AND GET A SNUGELY ( I THINK THAT IS WHAT IT IS CALLED)THE FRONT THING TO PUT THE BABY IN. GOOD LUCK!

Hi E.,
How would you use the stroller? If it is for walk taking I have a jogging double stroller that I use everyday (weather permitting). I love it. Although that is the only time I use a stroller. My older son was very good at listening so if we went to the mall he just walked on his own.

I've got a double umbrella stroller and it's nice and compact (but hard to get through doorways) my daughter is almost 2 and my son is three months, it reclines either side for infants and has tons of attatchments to fit you lifestyle~ i think you should just go to the store (babies r us has tons) and check them out and see what stroller your 2 year old responds to~ let him help pick it out...even if he doesn't use it constantly, it's nice to have when you're alone or shopping or he's sleepy. Other than that I use a baby carrier along with a harness (from target) for my daughter to walk alongside me and the baby~

If you are planning to use it outdoors, primarily, I suggest a bike trailer that converts to a stroller. It will be useful for much longer, since you could use it later for family bike rides. And it is generally cheaper than a double stroller.
